Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams Set To Open Scoop Shop in Atlanta

The shop will open in late summer next to Star Provisions in the Westside Provisions District.

I’ve been a fan of Jeni’s since tasting some of the wild flavors like Cherry Lambic Sorbet.

And I was more impressed after testing some of the recipes from the “Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams At Home” cookbook for an AJC Food story on homemade ice cream.

For those who don’t know, the “secret” base ingredient in Jeni’s recipes for home ice cream makers is a touch of softened cream cheese.

The only “secret” ingredient in Jeni’s commercial base is grass-grazed Ohio cream.

Here’s the (slightly edited) press release from Jeni’s:

(COLUMBUS, OHIO)—Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams is proud to announce plans to open their first-ever scoop shop in late summer in Atlanta at 1198 Howell Mill Road in the Westside Provisions Distric.

The shop—next to Star Provisions—will feature the signature flavor Black Coffee ice cream (made with Batdorf & Bronson’s beans) and the full menu of built-from-the-ground-up ice creams that Time called “the best in America.”

Jeni Britton Bauer, who founded Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams in 2002 in Columbus, Ohio’s historic North Market says:

“Atlanta has such a long, rich history of great food and drink, and we love what’s been going on with everything in the Westside Provisions District. We are beyond excited to be opening near Star Provisions and Ann Mashburn and to become neighbors to the rest of Westside’s customers-first shops. And we can’t wait for the opportunity to scoop our ice creams to fans who have been shipping our pints to their homes in and around Atlanta.”

Jeni, whose family of shops includes 11 in Ohio and one in Nashville, Tenn., has honed her ice cream-making skills for nearly two decades.

In 2012, the New York Times best-seller “Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams at Home,” earned Jeni a James Beard Award. In its eighth printing, the book remains the go-to manual for making ice creams with a standard home machine. “No one makes ice cream like Jeni Britton Bauer,” proclaimed Food & Wine, while The Washington Post dubbed Jeni “an ice cream wizard.”

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams—which mail orders pints of ultra-creamy, deeply flavorful, one-of-a-kind grass-grazed ice creams to an ever-increasing number of households coast to coast—is also served in select grocery stores in Atlanta and throughout America.

Every single ice cream Jeni creates begins with luscious grass-grazed Ohio cream from Snowille in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. And as many of the main ingredients as possible — real fruits and vegetables; unique wines; whiskeys; beers and liqueurs; honey; chocolate; vanilla—are provided directly from the source. In Jeni’s kitchen, Jeni’s team then blends, bakes, peels, chops, skins, or pulverizes the ingredients by hand.

“We make everything we can from scratch, with many of our ingredients provided by farmers and producers in the Midwest or shipped directly from international partners,” Jeni says. “Our scoop shops, with our impeccable service, serve as a true reflection of the work we put into our great ice creams.

“Our flavors change constantly which makes our stores the epicenter of our company. We have signature flavors, flavors that return each year, and limited-edition ‘pop-up’ flavors that are here today, gone tomorrow. You can always get old standbys and make new discoveries in our shops, which makes it fun for the customers and for us every day, all year.”

In Jeni’s Atlanta scoop shop, customers will be able to order all the same flavors offered in their shops in Ohio and Nashville: scoops of every flavor delivered in cups or hand-made waffle cones, as well as our popular Ice Cream Macaroon Sandwiches. Cups and cones can be enjoyed inside our beautiful shop, or ordered to go and savored during a stroll through the Westside Provisions District.

Customers also can order pints and ice cream macaroon sandwiches to go with as much dry ice as needed for the journey to the freezer. As for the shop itself, Jeni will apply the same care and attention to detail to the interior/exterior of the shop and the shop “experience” as she does the ice cream.

Right now, you can find Jeni’s ice cream at several shops around Atlanta, including, Star Provisions, The Dancing Goats Coffee Bar, and The Fresh Market in Roswell.
