Does anyone remember the pimento cheese fritters at the former Relish Restaurant in Roswell? And the similar ones on the menu at Pico Autentico that abruptly replaced Relish?

Now you can get pimento cheese fritters once again at The Mill Kitchen & Bar in Roswell, the third restaurant to occupy that Roswell space.

I was very disappointed when I heard Taft exited after the 1st time we went. We were told the spring menu was arriving the next week & that led to much anticipation. Yet, the menu hasn’t really changed. So much for the true seasonality of the concept.

What I really appreciate about The Mill is a well-thought-out kids menu. So few places have such a thing – a bit upscale for the adults, while providing affordable, real food for kids. My husband commented that is was cheaper to bring the kids than to get a sitter. Most items were around $5, including a beverage. You can barely get a Happy Meal for that price.

Many things I have tried at The Mill have been excellent – the shrimp & grits punching with flavor, the short rib was an extra-large serving, but tender & tasty, the fritters were gooey yumminess (I enjoy the flavors of the Relish originals in the Ooey Gooey sandwich at The Fickle Pickle) and the meatballs were probably my favorite item. My kids loved their scoops of High Road Craft ice cream – we are big fans and have been on the tour there a few times. I loved my pecan pie & my husband didn’t speak until he finished his hummingbird cake. I assume it was good as it was gone quite quickly.

Brunch is good as well (not fabulous as the Relish brunch used to be), though I wish there was a brunch menu for kids. Mine ordered from the regular menu – my little one going for something standard with eggs & my older one opting for french toast with chicken tenders. I would go back for the latter – the sorghum butter melted into the toast & chicken creating a salty, sweet, buttery delight. My Sunday morning casserole was OK, but nothing special; my husband said the same about his benedict.

I hope the departure of Taft doesn’t take this place downhill. It was such an exciting opening, such a great 1st impression, but from what I’m hearing & the lack of promised “farm-to-table” follow through, I’m hoping it survives. This is a fantastic spot (even I can get over that I saw my 1st dead body there – it was once a funeral home) & is so close to my house, I want to see this one make it.

We LOVED Relish, and perhaps had our hopes set too high when we went to The Mill. The food was meh. That’s about the totality of our experience.
I want to see this spot succeed because the location (especially nice when Canton St is overflowing) but unless they can find the right chef, it may be an uphill battle

I have tried the Mill twice and likely won’t subject myself to it a third time. The fireplace on the patio is charming, but the food was simply awful … both shortly after opening and again recently. A star, even a single one? Seriously?

Jenny, I had to roll my eyes at your statement that “fried chicken is fried chicken is fried chicken”! The fried chicken at the Mill likely induces Colonel Sanders to roll in his grave. I suggest visits to nearby Table & Main and Greenwood’s. Both of these Roswell delights serve exceptional fried chicken.

I’ve had more disappointment based on recommendations for fried chicken than probably anything else. It’s all variations on a very narrow theme. Yes, you can screw it up, but done well it’s all just about the same thing (as Jenny says). Greenwood’s and table and main are perfectly fine, yes, but it’s still fried chicken. There’s a ceiling.

I went to Mill Kitchen shortly after it opened and all five of the people in our party loved the restaurant. We had fun sampling the appetizers and ate our entrees to the point of being stuffed and satisfied. The restaurant had a fun atmosphere, we had fantastic service, and the mixologist loved being challenged and dared…..and we loved the results! I find it hard to believe that Taft’s exit can truly have such a large affect on the restaurant. We are excited to have The Mill Kitchen in Roswell!
