Kentucky Derby celebrations May 4th

AJC Staff

AJC Staff

We are approaching one of my favorite weekends of the spring…not only will the city be overrun with Cinco de Mayo parties, but this Saturday, May 4th is the 139th running of the only horse race most of us ever pay attention to – The Kentucky Derby.

And another Atlanta tradition, Derby Day, is celebrating its 31st year this weekend. Hosted by the Shepherd Center’s Junior Committee, the event regularly draws over 1,000 big-hat and pastel wearing participants, and takes over the Georgia International Horse Park in Conyers this Saturday.

The proceeds from the event benefit the Shepherd Center and will go to fund medical treatment, research and rehabilitation for people with spinal cord and brain injuries. Guests will be bussed into the event from Buckhead starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Once there, a ticket ($60 advanced, $70 at the door) buys you a food, drinks(think – mint juleps as far as the eye can see), casino games, drawings, a live and a silent auction, and a live broadcast of the race, complete with the option of betting on your favorite horse. Cap the night off with a performance from The Breakfast Club.

You can find all of the details and buy tickets at their website here.

Don’t want to leave town? Here are a couple of other spots that are hosting Derby Day parties:

Cook Hall

Party starts at 3 p.m. and includes a Big Hat Contest

3 p.m., Saturday May 4th. 3377 Peachtree Road NE, Atlanta.

The Family Dog

Join the crew at The Angry Chef’s Family Dog in Morningside for $5 mint juleps, a hat contest, and betting games.

3 p.m, Saturday May 4th. 1402 N. Highland Ave., Morningside.

Derby Day at Leon’s Full Service

Saturday, Leon’s will kick off an all day Derby party including food and drink features, a hat contest, and horse betting. All betting proceeds will go to charity.

11:30 a.m., Saturday May 4th. 131 E. Ponce de Leon Ave, Decatur.

All horse racing has done for us is proof that if you hit an animal, it will run.

I find it abhorrent that some actually have parties for this.

schnitzeled……..Wow, thats a new and unusual view on a great tradition. It has always been party time in my family for the Derby. It continues even today with friends. One of the best Saturday’s of the year.

Horses love to run? If so, why is their a dwarf on their back hitting them in the hind quarters?

I fail to see how my view is unusual. As stated above, there are small humans on the horse, striking it to make the horse run faster. It looks like it hurts. Tell you what……Invite me to your party and I will randomly strike your guests with a heavy stick. Tell me then how much fun it is.

Schnitzel… absolutely no one wants you at their party!
Someone so concerned with a horse’s ash is quite clearly a horse’s ash.

The parade of celebrities with big hats is comical. Let’s hope none of them trips and falls, breaks an ankle and has to be put down.
