Vote for one of three Atlantans in running for Food & Wine’s Best New Pastry Chef
Last year, Food & Wine magazine began recognizing pastry chefs in its national competition for “The People’s Best New Chef.” In this year’s contest, three Atlantans are in the running: Melanie Durant of Empire State South, Andrea Litvin of The Spence, and Eric Wolitzky of Cakes & Ale.
Food & Wine compiled a list of 50 nominees divided into three regions: East, Central and West. Each of the pastry chefs included have been in charge of a kitchen for less than five years.
Vote for your favorite pastry chef online now through Apr. 8 at 5 p.m. Finalists, one from each region, will be announced on Apr. 9.
Winners will be featured in the July issue of Food & Wine.
Meet the three Atlanta contenders:
- Melanie Durant attended The French Culinary Institute in New York and currently works at Empire State South. Her previous experience includes stints at Cakes & Ale, Woodfire Grill, Two Urban Licks and WD~50. On her menu, you’ll find the cheese puffs which hold winnimere ice cream and come with sour cherries, quadruple sabayon and walnut buttercrunch.
- Andrea Litvin completed some coursework at Le Cordon Bleu in Atlanta and currently works at The Spence. She has spent time in the kitchens of Livingston Restaurant and Bar, Flip Burger Boutique and ABC Kitchen (New York). Her menu includes a strawberry danish with poppyseed ice cream and cornmeal.
- Eric Wolitzky attended The French Culinary Institute in New York and runs the pastry program at Cakes & Ale. His background includes positions at Baked (Brooklyn) and Hearth (NYC). His current menu includes a peanut butter trifle with peanut butter ice cream, caramelized bananas, vanilla cake, strawberry jam and sweet cornflakes.
