Game-X pushes opening back to Friday

Legacy Property Group, the team behind STATS, Max’s Coal Oven Pizzeria, and Der Biergarten are adding another new development in the downtown/Luckie-Marietta district, but this time the focus isn’t just on the food. Instead, Game-x is a 12,000 sq. ft oasis of state of the art gaming, with some craft beers, cocktails, and fast-casual dining thrown in.

Originally slated to open tomorrow, March 27th, Game-X recently announced they have to push the opening back to this Friday the 29th. As with any new construction, this can be subject to change, but you can keep up with it on their Facebook page.

Billing itself more as a “barcade”, Game-X plans to offer a more adult-oriented experience, rather than trying to appeal to parents as an arcade for their kids. One way they are doing this is with the prizes that gamers can redeem their tickets for. Instead of some neon purple panda bear or light up gumball machine that will land in storage after spending $200 in quarters to win them, Game-X plans to offer prizes like Atlanta hotel staycations or tickets to in-town sporting events.

Now, I’ve been known to hit up a Dave & Busters or two in my childhood, and I’m sure I’m not the only one here in Atlanta that can say the same. Are you grown-folks planning on checking out Game-X, or is something like the more low-key, retro Joystick more up your alley?

Oh, heavens yes. I will be there all weekend.
On Friday night, I’ll be hanging out by the pinball machine with one foot up on the wall smoking a cigarette and wearing a cut-off t-shirt.
Saturday I’ll be playing foosball and buying beer for underage “at-risk” youth most of the afternoon.
Then it’s off to Ormsby’s for my PM bar shift.

Jon, ‘barcades’ in their inherent nature are retro. See Bone Lick, Joystick, or the original Barcades in NYC and Philly. This place isn’t that. It’s modern, Dave & Busters style. They won’t have pinball, or Street Fighter II or games you played growing up. They’ll have Fruit Ninja. To me this is like Der Biergarden, a poseur place trying to hard to be authentic, but in the end just catering to the tourists of downtown. Intowners will see right through it, suburbanites need not pass by their D&B’s on 75 & 85. I’ll give David Marvin some credit though, it beats the Museum of Patriotism by a mile.

12,000 sq ft in downtown Atlanta for a ‘kids’ sports bar? ‘For Lease’ sign coming in 12-18 months.
