Do you juice?

fat-sick-and-nearly-deadI’ve been called a lot of things, but “a healthy eater” isn’t really one of them. It was one of the reasons why I slipped so comfortably into my role here on the dine team covering “popular eats” like pizza, burgers, barbecue, etc. Those had been a few of my favorite things for years.

In my house, my wife is definitely the more health conscious of the two of us, and being married to a food critic that covers the beat that I’ve been covering for the last few years doesn’t make things easier for her. I’m professionally obligated to tempt her on a daily basis.

She has never been one to try all of the hot new diets or fads, so when I came home one night to a shiny new Breville Juice Fountain in my kitchen, I was a little taken aback. It wasn’t like her to go for what I thought of as a gimmicky diet fad. But, it turns out, I was wrong.

While I’d been out of town, she had watched the documentary Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead, which follows Joe Cross, an Australian who comes to America for a 60-day juice fast to counteract a lifetime of dietary abuse. I did a little scoffing, and eventually learned to sleep through the whirring of the juicer at 7 AM every morning. The inside of my fridge is now a rain forest, overflowing with huge bunches of kale.

But I finally got around to watching the film, and I highly recommend it…it may be a bit eye opening, and possibly terrifying. You can watch it for free on Hulu here. Rather than get into the merits of juicing, I’ll let Mr. Cross fill you in.

Of course, many of the best tasting juices are all fruit, but those are also all highly caloric and packed with natural sugars, so don’t go around thinking you are being all healthy just because you are drinking 5,000 calories of orange juice every day. And some of the more low-calorie, nutrient-rich juices taste like absolute death, so there you have to find a happy medium between the two.

The Mean Green is a juice highly featured in the film, and one that I’ve really come to enjoy. It is a good mix of healthy and flavorful, and I actually look forward to drinking the stuff now.

The Mean Green (from Fat, Sick, & Nearly Dead)

6 Kale Leaves

1 Cucumber

4 Celery Stalks

2 Green Apples

1/2 Lemon (i put a whole lemon in instead of 1/2)

1 piece of ginger (i usually put about 1.5 inches of ginger root in)

Though I know I’d drop an easy 15lbs if I went head first into a 10-day juice fast, I have not been able to work out exactly how I can go 10 days without eating food and keep my job here at the AJC.

Has anyone else gotten into juicing? Do tell!

I just started juicing recently and so haven’t gotten very adventurous yet. My usual for 1 serving is 2 carrots, 1 kale leaf, a handful of spinach, 1 apple and a piece of ginger. I’ve tried celery, but I don’t like whole celery and the taste shows up prominently in the juice.

I haven’t yet but thinking about it heavily. My uncle just did a whole month of juicing in Jan. He lost a lot of weight but he says he notices his normal aches and pains are now gone. Don’t think I can do a whole month without solid foods but maybe 5 days a week…

I think juicing is stupid, if you eliminate all of that good fiber that you need to fill full.

I use to juice or shall I say, make smoothies on the weekend, as I had more time. I would sometimes make extra for the next day, but it’s not the same as full meal. It’s great for breakfast, but I prefer a little more protein for my lunch.

By the way, love the article! Great Information, can’t wait to watch the film. I am little frighten that I may never want to get meat or processed foods ever.

Got a Nutribullet for x-Mas..Started doing one a day for Breakfast with a Nutrigrain Bar…Have lost about 8 lbs, lost all puffiness and bloating due to a hi carb diet. Excercised 4-5 times a week as I have always…have gotten several comments from people on how ive “leaned up” even though the weight loss was mininmal over almost 3 months…My recipe is handful of Spinich, Handful of Kale, Strawberrys, Blueberries, and a Bananna..I add some Acai Berry/Pomagranite jusice from Boathouse Farms organic and water…Tasty drink…
