Victory in Decatur

Paul Calvert at Victory Bar

Paul Calvert at Victory Bar

Victory Sandwich Bar and Emporium near Decatur Square tried an under-the-radar “soft opening” last week. But that didn’t keep crowds from showing up from Day One to check out the second outpost of the popular Inman Park place known for bargain-priced sandwiches, canned beer and spiked slushies. “We’ve been slammed all week,” said Paul Calvert, who is in charge of the bar program, and will soon be running a second bar/restaurant concept called Paper Plane in the same Church Street building. 340 Church St. N.E., Decatur. 404-377-9300, vicsandwich.com.

Roswell Mill

Chef Marc Taft of Marietta’s Chicken and the Egg and brothers Scott and Randy McCray of McCray’s Tavern teamed up to launch the Mill Kitchen and Bar in Roswell. After several delays, the “Southern neighborhood restaurant” opened for dinner last night, and is set to open for lunch Feb. 25 and brunch March 3. Look for entrees ($17-$27), such as Georgia shrimp and grits and fried Ashley Farms chicken, and salads and sandwiches at lunch. 590 Mimosa Blvd., Roswell. 770-817-9347, themillkitchenandbar.com.

Marietta seafood spot

Pier 213 Seafood opened last week near Marietta Square. The fast-casual lunch and dinner spot offers a variety of fresh Gulf seafood sandwiches and steamed or fried plates, plus burgers, chicken, homemade desserts, including Key lime pie, and beer and wine. Brother-and-sister owners, Kevin and Kammie Sakprasit, have ties to both the Marietta area and the fishing communities in Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi. 35 S. Marietta Parkway, Marietta. 678-290-8170, pier213.com.

On Friday, Atlanta’s self-proclaimed “Angry Chef,” Ron Eyester, will NOT preside over Rosebud’s fourth annual oyster roast in Morningside. But Rosebud and the Family Dog, Eyester’s pub across the street, will serve regular dinner menus. $45. The new time and date: 4:30-8:30 p.m. March 16. Rosebud Patio, 1397 N. Highland Ave., Atlanta. 404-347-9747, rosebudatlanta.com.

Already tried Mill Kitchen in Roswell. Great atmosphere and the food/menu was great as well. Fried Chicken (with Mac and Cheese and Collards) was amazing. Also, so many wonderful appetizers to pick from, we couldn’t choose just one. It’s a must try!

Good luck to The Mill Kitchen and Bar. I’m going to drive past it, and go on down the road to the place they borrowed the concept from, where the bar has been set so high, no one will ever come close to it.

Looking forward to trying Pier 213 next week for lunch!

It is great to see neighboring businesses join forces. Bantam & Biddy along with Ansley Wine should prove to be a successful venture.

Just got the word that the Angry Chef’s oyster roast has been moved to March 16, due nasty weather. But I’m thinking nasty weather would be the perfect backdrop for Angry outbursts. And what happens if it rains on March 16?
