Neighborhood spotlight – Old Fourth Ward

joystickThis will be old news for some of you, but for everyone else – if you aren’t spending time in the Old Fourth Ward, you should be.

This part of town certainly isn’t for everyone. If, for example, seeing a homeless person on the street will make you clutch your purse, break into a slow jog, and whisper a quick prayer of thanks once they have passed you by, it might put you a little outside of your comfort zone. But due to a steady flow of new restaurants and bars that have been infiltrating the neighborhood over the last few years, the Old Fourth Ward/Edgewood area is quickly becoming a destination area for a night out.

Most of my friends live closer to the midtown/Buckhead area, and even though I generally consider them to be adventurous, and I’m always dragging them to new restaurants with me, getting down to the Edgewood area can sometimes be like pulling teeth. And I wish that wasn’t the case.

What I love about this area is the proximity of great dinner choices so close to perfect follow up bars. For my money, a night that begins with a group of friends splitting crispy duck buns and fencing chopsticks over hunks of Hamachi kama at Miso Izakaya followed by cocktails and ping pong at Sister Louisa’s Church right down the street is tough to beat. And while I seriously lament the passing of Dynamic Dish, the nerd in me jumps for joy as I’m sipping a Manhattan while playing Mortal Kombat II at Joystick Game Bar.

Also, quite of few of the restaurants in this area walk that line between dining and late-night destination. The old guard of this model in the O4W is The Sound Table, and still a great place to start and end a long night out. After sharing a slew of small plates, continue ordering from the excellent selection of cocktails and the DJs take over and this restaurant turns club. Ammazza, the pizza-slinging newcomer to the block, followed a similar path, bringing in a DJ and keeping the drinks and pies coming until 2 AM on weekends.

There are so few neighborhoods in Atlanta that offer a concentration of dining and drinking destinations within walking distance of each other. With the beltline set to run right through this area, expect to see the O4W continue to boom. If not already, you can expect this up and coming neighborhood to soon be one of the best destination areas in town.

Noni’s in technically in Downtown. The Old Fourth Ward’s border on Edgewood starts at Boulevard and ends at the Beltline. But regardless, this part of town is the center of what’s going on in Atlanta; streetcar, Beltline, new restaurants. So glad I just bought a home down there!

Also Drafting Table, American Roadhouse & Caramba Cafe (my favorite Mexican) are in Grant Park.

They keep saying the neighborhood is up and coming. . .We’ve not reached our peak, but we are definitely on the way to surpass that. Don’t forget: Across The Street, P’cheen, Jack’s Pizza and Wings, Indigo, The Albert, Noni’s, Drafting Table, Sampson Street Lofts, Irwin St. Market, Serpas, 4th & Swift, Krog Bar, Rathbun’s and Rathbun’s Steak, Lotta Frutta, Zuma Sushi, Highland Bakery.

And the list keeps growing and growing and growing. . .

Caramba, Drafting Table, and Caramba Cafe are now next to the MLK Marta Station at Decatur and Hill St.’s. This side of the tracks is Old Fourth Ward.

The article refers to O4W/Edgewood area, not just O4W.

There are 2 kinds of people in the world: Those who live in the O4W, and those who WISH they did!

The “Edgewood area” is east of Moreland, not in Old Fourth Ward. You wouldn’t say Marietta street in downtown Atlanta is the Marietta area, would you?

The neighborhood of Edgewood (my hood) is a different area all together than the bar district along Edgewood Ave so SC is incorrect.

I’m pretty sure that the Edgewood area of the O4W that is being referred to is the area south of SoNo and west of Poncey Highland but also encompassing the Inman Park area of the Krog St. bridge when it crosses through Cabbagetown. But the Edgewood area that is east of Downtown and north of Grant Park is not considered O4W because it has not gentified enough along the lines of Va-Hi or Midtown proper.

And let’s not even get started on Reynoldstown.
