Cake rings: the cupcake reinvented

Cake rings

Cake rings

Cupcakes have staying power. We’ve seen multiple cupcake shops open in the last few years. We’ve also seen cupcakes reinvented into cake pops, square cupcakes (Sweets on the Square in Lawrenceville), frosting shots and more. Now let’s try another twist: Cake rings.

Recently, I discovered cake rings made from miniature cupcakes at a friend’s birthday party. To make them, the hostess soaked the candy off of a slew of ring pops (remember those?), cut a slit in the bottom center of the cupcake liner and attached the ring with candy melts.

They were inspired by a version made by Karen Tack on the “Today Show.” Her book, “What’s New, Cupcake? Ingeniously Simple Designs for Every Occasion,” includes a recipe for “Ring Bling” cupcakes. This version, however, instructs you to insert the candy gem into the center of the cupcake. Sounds tricky to eat.

I ran a quick internet search to locate the ring inserts to save the time and waste of soaking off the candy, but found none. A few days later, however, while browsing in The Cook’s Warehouse, I happened to come across a jewel pop kit. The kit’s rings could be used to make cake rings instead of popsicles.

Cake rings are a fun, albeit gimmicky, way to serve cupcakes for both adults and children. My daughter and her friends would go crazy for these at one of their countless princess parties, particularly if they could add their own bling.

For when your hands are too tired to grip more sweets.

Is there even any cake below that frosting?

Cute but they seem incredibly messy. Would hate to be the one cleaning up after little ones running around with cake rings.

Gross and stupid. I think I’ll just go to the Flying Biscuit and get some pudge. Or make my own cupcakes in my kitchen…they are the best….HANDS DOWN.

I think these are just fabulous! I had them at my party and were not messy at all. Of course you don’t let a kid run around with a slice of cake on a plate, why would you have them run around with these? The little girls think they are darling, like having a big diamond ring, they posed for pictures with them and then ate them. They are actually less messy because the cupcake is on the ring not your hand. They are a perfect size too. You can make them however you like, mine had plenty of cake under a yummy icing. Your negative comments did not contribute at all I don’t know why bother, very childish to use the words stupid and gross. I loved the article!

Cupcake rings are a fun twist on a classic dessert. I went to a party where these were served & they were fabulous. Imagine a ladies’ party at a nail salon, a little wine & some cupcake rings, the perfect 2-3 bite dessert – what more could you want? I honestly found them far less messy than traditonal larger cupcakes since they are more mouth-sized (vs. the giant ones that seem to cover my kids’ entire faces) and certainly less of a hassle than a cake, which requires cutting, plating, etc. We ladies all refuse the giant cupcakes at parties & ask for just a sliver of cake, so these cupcakes give us just the right amount of sweet. I have boys, but would imagine these would be great for little girls’ parties as well.
