Top Chef Texas recap: Technical Difficulties

Bad news y’all.

Due to a probably preventable issue, my cable decided to take the night off.

Not that it was an important episode though. I mean, it was only the final four amid a frozen tundra. Padma and the cheftestants wandering around the artic, facing temperature related challenges that would terrify any lesser chef? Why not?

I hate to do it guys, but, what happened? Who deserves to go home? Who WENT home?

It was the second-best show( behind the Snow White episode).Short and sweet-the final trio are Paul, Lindsey and Sarah!

And, due to the structure of how they eliminated the 4th chef, it wound up that Bev and Sarah were the final two standing and had to compete directly against each other and only one could move on to the finale and if you didn’t see THAT coming about three episodes ago you’re blind as a bat. :)

Alas, the Beast moves on and the Churchmouse goes home. Anyone who’s seen my posts over this season knows I’ve been a Bev fan, so I was sad to see her go – again. And true to form, the Beast kept up her not-veiled-at-all distaste for Beverly last night. So for me, it was a thrill to see her (and full disclosure, Beverly, too) fall on her rather ample behind trying to ski.

And finally, seeing Padma holding a rifle was nothing less than euphoric. ;) Reminded me of those “calendars” my Dad used to hang in his shop.

say it isnt so, jon, say it isnt soooo. you have to see the episode and still do a write up on it. it was epic, epic i say! snow and skiis and guns. bev with a gun in her hands and the judges all wanting her to say she wanted to shoot sarah! bev actually was a pretty good shot, too. seems like a set up for paul to win the whole thing. i will prob stop watching if either of the two witches take the winnings–they have acted too ugly throughout. im not spoiling the surprise for you, jon. waiting to read your write up!

At the start Sarah said she was showing up as a nicer person (like Erica on All My Children?) hahahaha!!!! Maybe she bit her catty tongue a little, but her scathing looks of contempt for Beverly were on camera the entire episode. I was disappointed but not surprised that Sarah advanced and Bev went home. The producers wanted some more drama…but with Bev gone who will Sarah pick on? The most disturbing thing for me is that Lindsey feels so close to Sarah….gag, really? I think Paul will easily win Top Chef. I used to watch Top Chef to get some ideas for my own cooking adventures, but cooking on a moving gondola and chipping food out of ice blocks are not skills I will ever use. I like TLC’s Buddy the Cake Boss’s new show Kitchen Boss where he makes really delicious food, shows you how to cook it, including clever tricks, and so far I have successfully executed four of his dishes! Hooray for TLC!

Good grief – can they just the let the folks cook and see who cooks the best dishes? Why do they have to see if they can also shoot, ski, cook on a moving gondola and have arm strength to chip food out of ice blocks? What the heck does any of that have to do with showing how good a chef you are??

Great sandwich!

I thought it was ridiculous the hoops the cheftestants had to jump through. This was an important episode for them…getting into the finals, and they had to chip their ingredients out of ice, ski and shoot to get their food? How about just cooking good food? Forget all the stupid challlenges. I thought the skiing and biathalon was ridiculous, but I did enjoy seeing Sarah fall on her butt several times. The whole show seemed to be such a set up – Bev and Sarah competing against each other. Duh….we all could have predicted that the producers would set that up and nothing can convince me otherwise. Paul better win.

Not even gonna watch the end. By this point, I can’t stand even looking at Lindsay or Sarah, so I’ll be pulling for Paul without even watching. PK, you’re absolutely correct – they should just let ‘em COOK for the top spot than doing all those crazy hijinks. I dont’ care if the person cooking my food can shoot or ski, as long as they can make a great meal!

Why did they go to Whistler? Why not stay in Texas and have them butcher a steer? First challenge: cook in a gondola. The gondola was well stocked but at Blackcomb, they had to hop out and choose an ingredient and get back on. Lyndsey won and got $10k. Second event was to break open huge blocks of ice for their ingredients. Paul won. Sorry you missed out on Bev going all psycho on the ice blocks. Third had Bev and Sarah cross-country skiing and then coming back to shoot for their ingredients. Best part was Sarah bragging about her daddy teaching her to shoot in TX and then missing and claiming Bev had to have had more bullets than she. Sadly Bev’s slightly under-seasoned and over-cooked char did her in.

Come on! We’re down to the final four – just let these people COOK!!!! Having said that, it was funny to listen to Sarah talk about what a great shot she was…and then miss and miss and miss….. I was glad Beverly did something other than asian-inspired, even though it didn’t work out for her. At least she finally showed some diversity.

I will watch the episode! But I think the best series was the Voltaggio Bros vs Kevin. I felt so bad that Kevin didn’t win.

Dang! I wanted to read your snarky comments on the cross country skiing then shooting for food!

I hate the crazy stunts they are throwing at the chefs. Ridiculous….let them cook! I will watch the finale with hopes that Lindsey and particularly Sarah get smoked. Why in the world did they conclude the Texas series in Canada. The gondola was a joke. The ice pick gig was dangerous and stupid. and the cross country skiing and shooting was out of a bad dream. I can’t believe I love this show so much.My guilty pleasure.

I almost got sick to my stomach last night when Sarah hugged Bev and said that she enjoyed cooking with her so much. Ten seconds later she’s saying to the effect, “Thank goodness Bev is gone and never coming back.” How two-faced can you get? Paul, please win.

The absolute best part of the episode was the “coming up” quick take before commercial that showed Bev firing a rifle shot and immediately had Sarah falling backwards and crying “ARRGH!”. Priceless! Sometimes (many times?) I think much of the controversy between contestants is manufactured in the editing process. But, given some of the comments made by Padma, Tom, and Gail, I think there was true “tension” there around Bev-derella and the ugly step-sisters.
