Speaking of Sukiyaki….

Who knows that “Sukiyaki” was the title of a #1 hit in 1963?

I’ve heard it before – it randomly came up on Pandora recently. I recognized the tune from an “oldie” song, but I can’t place it now

The problem is I remember when it was a number #1 song.

Now I can’t get that damned song out of my head. I didn’t even have to look at the video. Is that wrong or what?

This version is “before my time”, but I do remember the cover by Taste of Honey.

I’m a little embarrassed to say, I had the 45.

The Japanese title – Ue o muite aruko – roughly translated as “l’ll keep looking upward as I walk” and the song’s lyrics have absolutely nothing to do with sukiyaki, and as a Newseek columnist once wrote, is like re-issuing “Moon River” in Japan with the title “Beef Stew” (per Wikipedia). Without the title change, though, you can bet it would not have gone up the charts like it did. A sad footnote is the fact that Kyu Sakamoto, who sang the hit, died back in 1985 in the crash of a Japan Airlines flight between Tokyo and Osaka that killed over 500 people, the deadliest single plane crash in history.

I am from Japan. I have heard that Sukiyaki song was #1 hit in The US. (I was born after the hit.) As DJ mention, the song has nothing to do with Sukiyaki. It sounds so strange for me. : ). And the way the singer of the song died was so sad for many Japanese…

This reminds me of a lot of the music we heard in the Officers club in Taipei, Taiwan in the early 60s. So much so that is still on my mp2 play lists. Brings a smile every time I hear it.

Sirius plays this song a lot on their 50s station. That’s why I love Sirius despite the mediocre sound quality. They stopped playing 50s and most 60s songs on the local radio a decade ago.
