F.A.B. debuts lower-priced menu

FABDINNER8.26.11French American Brasserie owner Fabrice Vergez has quietly unveiled a new, lower-priced menu and an updated look for his downtown eatery.

The new menu (right, and enlargeable with a click) features a new line-up of small plates called “brasserie bites,” including a frog leg and bean salad, and stuffed mussels and clams. Most entrees are now under $20.

“So many tourists on their way to the [Georgia] Aquarium would poke their heads in the door but not stop because the menu was too expensive,” he said. “This economy isn’t going to change, so we’ve got to adjust.”

Minor adjustments to the decor include an expanded bar area and removal of some of the brass railings to give the room a more casual look.

The last fine-dining chef to work at F.A.B., Cyrille Holota, has decamped to BLT Steak across the street, where he’s picked up a good review from Besha Rodell at Creative Loafing.

Vergez plans to open an upscale French restaurant called F&B in the Ritz-Carlton Residences in Buckhead.

Cool! The prices have kept me from going to FAB as often as I’d like. I’m a fan of the food but it’s been a special occasion place instead of a regular dining one. Looking forward to my next visit.

Question: are the changes reflected only in the dinner menu or are there changes to the lunch menu as well (not that the lunch menu was overpriced — just wondering)?

if that’s the discount price (which i can’t still afford), the regular price surely would leave my mouth a gap.

Good point, Darin. I haven’t seen the lunch menu. But I’d hope it reflects the change. When our office was downtown I often thought of going to FAB for lunch, but the prices kept me away. Would be nice to get in and out for 10 spot if you’re watching your wallet, or $15 for a nice, little entree.

Nice bistro prices on the new menu…

BLT is fantastic, but you pay for it. BLT also has a few bites from 5-7 at their bar, at $5…

If they really wanted to be French and give a great value, they’d offer a “formule” which is a three or four course meal for a set price. You choose from a selection of appetizers, entrées (plat principal), cheese or dessert. At lunch many offer a two course with a choice of appetizer or dessert only.

Apparently this idea brings cold chills to restaurant operators in the US, but it’s the norm in France.
