Morelli’s ice cream adds location, Bad Dog Taqueria opens and more

The second Morelli’s Gourmet Ice Cream and Desserts opens soon in the Edgewood Shopping District. The store will be giving away free ice cream from 12-2 p.m. on opening day in celebration of its opening. Note: opening day was originally scheduled for June 4, now it is TBA.

Woodfire Grill’s Kevin Gillespie is a partner in this new store, located in a former Coldstone Creamery space. Gillespie will create seasonal selections for the milkshake and sundae bar the new location features. Rotating ice cream, gelato and sorbet flavors will be available daily along with three to four signature shakes, ice cream cakes, smoothies and frappes.

The internationally-inspired Bad Dog Taqueria opened in Emory Village this week. The nine mainstay tacos, made with fresh and local ingredients, include options such as Korean barbecue pork belly with kimchee slaw and salsa verde or the vegetarian Indian samosa with curried potatoes, peas and coriander chutney. Maybe you’re familiar with The Derby Pub Sports Grill, the oldest sports bar in Atlanta. It’s back under new management with all five locations receiving renovations. The Roswell location is the first to open and serves what they call “Southern comfort food.” The menu has broad appeal and features daily blue-plate specials. Ask the manager of the new Fisherman’s Bucket in Duluth what they serve and he will rattle off a rapid-fire list of seafood (“stone crab, Dungeness crab, soft-shell crab, shrimps…”) as if he has been doing so for years. 101 Concepts, which owns Food 101 and Meehan’s Public House, is hosting a “Southern Hospitality” fundraiser to benefit the efforts of the Red Cross to help tornado victims across the South. Food 101 and all three Meehan’s locations will participate in the fundraiser by serving a Southern-inspired menu on the evening of June 7. Food 101 will serve a special three-course menu and each Meehan’s location will offer a Southern barbecue menu. All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Red Cross to benefit the April 27th tornado victims. Who doesn’t want free ice cream? This looks particularly delicious. I understand that they have maple bacon ice cream. . . that will be interesting to try!
