Blair River, morbidly obese spokesman for Heart Attack Grill, dies at 29

The 575-pound spokesman for the Heart Attack Grill in Chandler, AZ — a restaurant that mocks and glorifies cardiovascular disease — has died of pneumonia at the age of 29. Scantily clad waitresses in nurse uniforms and hugely caloric burgers and fries are the headliners at this restaurant, where everyone has to wear a hospital gown, and people who weigh over 350 pounds eat free.

A new obese spokesperson, who is a survivor of open-heart surgery, will replace River.

Watch this video from ABC News. What do you think: freedom of speech or shut the place down?

While I think the place should shut down just because it’s stupid, nobody is forcing anyone to eat there. And it’s not like they’re advertising their food as diet food.

Are you joking John? Freedom of speech (and eat) of course.

By the way, what was the calorie and fat content of that ‘tricked-out Southern comfort food’ you ate at 4th and Swift last week. You remember, the one with the ‘“Three Little Pigs” pork chops, the ‘butt-sinking-onto-cushion…dinner rolls’, the ‘double-thick, half-length cut of New York strip’, the ‘crispy-creamy veal sweetbreads ($13) sitting in a round cast-iron casserole over soft polenta buttery orbs of hakurei turnips’, the ‘confit duck thigh appetizer’, the ‘wood-roasted venison…with spiced kabocha squash puree and sweet pomegranate jus lapping against meltingly tender meat’ the ’smashed root vegetable cannelloni… swimming in a Parmesan broth’ and the ‘inhalable sticky toffee pudding with coffee cream.’

Are ‘high-class’ fat and calories not equally bad for you?

If we make stupidity illegal, we’re all in a lot of trouble… At 29, you’re old enough to wipe your own bottom (not likely that this guy could…) and make your own decisions – good or bad.

We advertise the U.S. as a free country. So here is an in-your-face honest business that is deceiving nobody, and some people want to shut it down? No, it’s not good for you, but that fact is made perfectly clear (not that any idiot couldn’t figure it out for themselves). However, if you eat there once or twice a year, it’s probably not going to be as harmful as any number of bad habit vices that are never mentioned. Oh, we are still a free country, aren’t we? That alone should be the determining factor.

Interesting story. It was even more interesting when I saw it on other news sites about 2 1/2 weeks ago.

It reminds me of that famous SNL skit that “Generalissimo Francisco Franco is still dead…”

March 3 to be exact. John, maybe you can tell us who will win the 2011 Super Bowl next?

That’s OK. Cynthia Tucker (former columnist on the AJC) used to resort to copying entire sections of her editorials straight from WikiPedia (with attribution of course). That’s what goes for journalism in ATL these days.

Less than timely reporting, this has been everywhere for what, a week? Perhaps forgivable if you had added something to the story other than a silly First Amendment angle.

I hadn’t read the other comments. Sorry for piling on, though it’s still a pretty lame piece.

Yeah, sorry, not the most timely. But I just got wind of it and was amazed/disgusted by the video. Just seemed like something to share. Also amazed that there was real discussion on the video of outlawing the restaurant.
