In the news: El Cabrito closed, Basha Bistro open

elcabritoEl Cabrito – CLOSED

The OTP Mexican restaurant off the little section of Buford Highway I dub “no man’s land”, has closed. The stand-alone restaurant that was known for their tacos de chivo (goat) looks like it has been closed for a while. I ventured out there and confirmed it for myself, but it got dark pretty quickly so I took a few snaps with the camera and scooted off.

6530 Buford Hwy NE, Atlanta. 770-300-0364 – DISCONNECTED.

In other news:

Basha Bistro

A reader wrote to inform me that a new Mediterranean restaurant called Basha Bistro has opened on 14th Street (midtown) by the mosque. The menu boasts a variety of chicken and beef dishes in shawarma or kebab form. For hungry vegetarians, the Basha mezze platter comes with grape leaves, hummus, baba ghannouj and falafel, which can be ordered for just $10.

11:30 a.m.-8 p.m. Mondays-Sundays, 420 14th Street, Atlanta. 404-254-5611, $.

Sonny’s Place

Shakshouka with home fries

I wrote about Sonny’s opening last week and made a trip over the weekend to check it out. I was motivated by shakshouka on their menu. It’s a spicy stew-like dish made with tomatoes, onion and pepper, two runny eggs and served with toasted bagel halves. The sauce/stew reminds me of salsa criolla, a sauce used in Latin cooking.

8 a.m.-8 p.m. Mondays-Sundays, 2168 Briarcliff Road, Atlanta, 404-982-0666, $.

The Creative Loafing has reported that Fifth Group Restaurants will be taking over the downtown space (One Ninety One Peachtree Tower) that was formerly Il Mulino. The story indicates that the new concept with be a Tex-Mexican restaurant offering lunch, dinner and catering services.

Not true at all. I happened to be interested ANYTIME a new Mediterranean restaurant opens within a reasonable distance of my house.

Do we really need another over-priced tex-mex restaurant…we need some creativity people!

Thanks Kit, that’s why I said it “looks like it has been closed for a while.” I had nothing to confirm it otherwise.

Is Cabrito the Mexican place on Buford Highway that grills whole chickens in the back (we always called it Pollo Hut because it’s in an old Pizza Hut)? If so, that’s so very sad because it was amazing and cheap!!! They had a 1/2 chicken, beans, rice, tortillas & sauces/pickles for $5

Re Sonny’s Place: Shakshooka is also similar to the Italian dish Eggs in Purgatory. But Sonny’s is heavenly.

Did Basha go into the space where 5th Runway is/was? Or do we have two mediteranean places now on 14th street?

Lisa – Not sure. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of 5th Runway. Basha is immediately to the left of the mosque if you are facing it from 14th.

Yes…same spot. Food was excellent but there was never anyone there. Hopefully the new incarnation will fare better!
