Egg and Swiss from Einstein Bros. Bagels
Lately my morning routine has changed so that twice a week I need to grab a quick breakfast on the go. Like everyone else in this great land of ours, I seem to have settled on the breakfast sandwich as my go-to drive-by breakfast.
I have been trying different ones on my route, with varying degrees of success. I don’t like to eat meat in the morning, so I’ve been munching my way through various combinations of egg and cheese.
I didn’t mind this multigrain bagel from Einstein Bros., bouncy and fluffy with innocuous yellow egg curd and a slice of Swiss cheese subbed for cheddar.
I really hated the gooey, pressed, leathery, steamy bagel from Panera Bread holding an egg puck and dripping napalm gobs of yellow cheese.
But if I’m looking for a good breakfast sandwich, where do I go?

Drip in grant park, make your own breakfast sandwich and taco cabana breakfast tacos with queso and roasted salsa. I know, technically not a sandwich but a great alternative to a breakfast sandwich.

I’ve come to realize that no restaurant (chain or otherwise) can beat the toasted bagel, fried egg and cheese sandwich that I make most mornings. There’s nothing special about it, but it’s fresh every time and made how I like it.
The only place I tend to buy breakfast these days (if at all) is Chik-Fil-A. You can’t recreate their chicken biscuit at home, no matter how hard you try.

Belly has really great breakfast sandwiches on those olive oil bagels, but agreed with Steve on the homemade sandwich being the best. If you have time to stop in somewhere & get a breakfast sandwich, you should have time to fry up a couple of eggs with a slice of cheese on toasted bread.

I like Einstein’s and the fact they serve breakfast sandwiches all day. And the fact they have turkey sausage and turkey bacon as an option. When you don’t get much time for lunch, it’s nice to have an alternative to the normal greasy fast food fare but still can get your food relatively quickly. I just got myself a turkey sausage and cheddar egg sandwich from there 10 minutes ago!

My go-to is a wheat everything bagel with egg at Belly. Yum! You can also get their kick ass grits with egg and cheese in them. That’s an easy option to eat while driving. Just shovel in to your mouth when stopped. Highland Bakery has great breakfast sandwiches too.

I’ve always enjoyed eating breakfast at Social House or West Egg… both on Howell Mill Road. West egg has the best biscuits (key ingredient to the breakfast sandwich). Social House serves a great country friend steak that comes with egg and buscuit…. I guess you could technically make it into a sandwich.

Bagelmeister in Douglasville. Get the bagels, bring them home, add a smear of regular cream cheese, a slice of lox, onion, tomato and a kosher dill on the side. You have saved enough money to buy the bakers’ dozen w/two cream cheese sides.

I like my oatmeal, and when I have to head out too early to make it at home I like Starbucks. Tried the McDonalds but it was all fruit and no oatmeal. The reason people like ChickFilA biscuits is that they load them with sugar. Highest carb count among biscuits if you read the nutritional label. Martins has great biscuits and several varieties, but I like Martin’s scrambled eggs–they actually TASTE like eggs and not something that came out of a factory.

Back before the Westside got gentrified, I worked in that area. One time, one of my day laborers (in a successful attempt to gain my favor and persuade me to find him some work) brought me a breakfast sandwich from a local hole in the wall: Scrambled eggs, American cheese, sausage patties, and mayo on buttered white toast. Weighed about 5 pounds, felt like 10 after I ate it, but man was it tasty!
Don’t know where he got it and I haven’t had one since. Probably a wise decision.

Don’t hate me but the good ole Egg McMuffin is awesome. Fat levels lower than a CFA bicuit due to the muffin and Canadian bacon instead of the lard laden biscuit and fried chicken. The egg is broken fresh….not like the “egg whites” at so many places. I know, it’s Mickey D’s but it gets good reviews from the health crowd and tastes pretty darn good. Of course, my real favorite is the Chicken egg and cheese on sunflower bagle from CFA……WHEN I don’t make my own at home…..

Also yes to anything you can make at home but unless someone moves my kids school start time and my work start time back until 9 or 10 AM – cooking and assembling a breakfast sandwich at home just isn’t going to happen. They get up, get them ready and they get oatmeal or yogurt while I get ready.
And more yes votes from anything from BB’s (cumming or new Alpharetta locations) as well as Sun in my Belly or Metro Fresh
But, none of those places are on my morning route and deviation from it adds to an already burdensome 1 hour commute, what can I get from places that I actually pass on my route (Holcomb Bridge to GA 400 to midtown)?
– not going to be popular, but the Egg McMuffin remains the one thing I will eat from McDonalds. At around 300-350 calories and relatively lo-fat I dont feel like I have eaten a grease slick like I do at Chick-fil-a (as much as I like them, cant deal with the AM grease).
- Starbucks new breakfast foods are surprisingly good. The egg white/turkey bacon on whole wheat muffin; the spinach/feta wrap or the egg with gouda and other cheeses are all really tasty.
- I have tried the flatbreads at Dunkin Donuts – combined with their really great coffee – they are not bad – not great but will do in a pinch.

Hate to mention New York again but the favorite up there is 1 fried egg (or 2) bacon and american cheese on a hard roll wrapped in wax paper until you eat it. Served at all streetcorner deli’s. A buttered hard roll is also big. Since there are no real bakeries or NY deli’s in Atlanta you cannot get a hard roll so buy a Kaiser roll at Publix and make your own. Nothing close can be bought or made here.

My favorites have already been named….but again…
Belly….try the rosemary bagel for a bit of savory goodness in the morning
Alon’s…it’s ALL good, but the egg/cheese panini is my fav…must be sourdough
West Egg…can’t go wrong with any choice, but try Pimento Cheese and Egg, yum
I’m still looking for somewhere to get a breakfast sammy on reasonable sized pancakes instead of a biscuit or bagel or toast. I can do this at the golden arches, but would prefer better sausage.

I guess trying to provide information on a fantastic breakfast sandwich is insulting to Typical Redneck.

Try the breakfast sandwiches at the Great Harvest Bread Co in Smyrna, GA –great egg, cheese & sausage sandwich made on their fresh made whole wheat bread with an awsome dill spread. They are so big — but you mange to eat it all. They get their meat from Patak — try turkey or ham too!

Einstein Bro’s Really?!? I am always disappointed with their food. DELICIOUS and CHEAP breakfast sandwiches can be found at the New York Deli on Atlanta Rd. http://www.jacksnyd.com/. Their coffee isn’t great though.

Not surprised people would claim the CFA biscuit as a favorite since it is so loaded with sugar it is nearly inedible to anyone with a waist size less than their height.
You know, you can get a really quick bowl of delicious pho that will start your day off really well. Probably not take more than an extra 10 minutes of your time in the morning. Pho #1, Dai Loi #2, and several other places along Buford Hwy. Or grab a bahn mi to munch on the go.

I don’t know about Atlanta, but up in Woodstock on Bells Ferry Road is a place called Zest and Zing and they make a bacon, egg and cheese biscuit that puts pretty much every other such biscuit to shame. Made to order on homemade biscuits and I seem to recall it runs like $3 or $4 but it’s plenty big and plenty good.

Love, love the egg & cheese biscuit I had recently at Highland Bakery. Huge fluffy, flaky biscuit that was warm even after I walked back to the office thru the cold morning air. Will sooo be going back to get another once it starts to warm up again. Delicious!!!

The biscuits at The Little Red Barn near downtown Lawrenceville are as big as Whopper buns! I’m not kidding!

If you’re in the Tucker area stop by Matthews Cafeteria before 10AM. Get the scambled egg biscuit and if you don’t mind the drippings or calories ask the server for a little of the spooned-on melted butter. In fact just a butter biscuit is mighty tasty – again it can drip, if you don’t tell them to go easy on the butter. I like the bacon or sausage biscuits too. I haven’t tried the link sausage or ham. If you really want a gut bomb get the meat on a butter biscuit.

Bagel Palace in Toco Hill Shopping Center. Hickory House in the Northlake area. Pastrys A GoGo Decatur. Thumbs Up DIner Decatur. I usually go for bagel, bacon, egg, and cheese or the same but just on biscuit, it depends on the place. I wish we had Biscuitville here in GA, if you are ever traveling in NC look for them.
