Relish restaurant to close

Andy Badgett, chef/owner at Relish in Roswell, announced yesterday that he plans to close the restaurant after New Year’s Eve.

“We’ve had a notable few years here at Relish,”  Badgett said in a prepared statement. “We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished and the reputation we’ve built. However, we see trends changing in suburban dining and we want to be ahead of the curve.”

Badgett and his partners in the Condiment Group will keep the space and transform into a Mexican restaurant to be called Pico Auténtico. Look for a late January opening.

Badgett must surely have eyed the runaway success of Inc. Street Food nearby — another venue for stylish, inexpensive Mexican fare. He is also a restaurateur who knows when to swap out concepts, having previously transformed the high-end Asher into its current incarnation as the Fickle Pickle Café.

dine.0201Still, I’ve heard from a number of Northsiders who will miss Relish’s updated Southern cooking, such as the signature pimento cheese fritters (left).

They might want to make reservations quickly.

This sucks! My wife and I had our rehearsal dinner there and it was awesome! It will be a sad day when Relish closes it’s doors.

Agreed with Lance, average at best (I’d say the same for Food Inc. as well). Headline for this should really be “Relish Restaurant CLOSING” and not “Closes”. With all of the recent overnight restaurant closings around Atlanta without warning, it’s important to keep them all straight!

This is sad news, but as long as I can continue to get a fried green tomato sandwich at Fickle Pickle with their fantastic potato salad, I will be ok :)

Relish’s menu promises more than it delivers. Pimiento cheese fritters sound great, but came to my table cold instead of the warm treats I expected. And Krispy Kreme bread pudding could be a lot tastier than the super sweet glob of dough and bland espresso sauce that was served. I went twice and had no plans to go again. Bring back Asher; it was great.

I agree with Jim H. Roswell doesn’t need another mexican restaurant. Roswell needs a great “meat and 3″ southern diner like Mathews in Tucker.

@Brian – I agree, I’d like to see them change to a more family friendly “meat and 3″ place rather than another Mexican place – plenty of options in that realm, and they’ll have to be priced very competitively to do well in that market. But, Badgett must know what he’s doing, ala the asher to fickle pickle transformation, so we’ll see..

I also agree with whomever said the Relish menu promised more than it delivered. There were definitely some disappointments. But their Sunday brunch will be missed…

Yes, I think Roswell is now ready for Asher to return before we get another Mexican restaurant. Besides Indigo and VG we don’t have many upscale spots. Relish was just okay, I think Fickle Pickle is the better of their two restaurants.

Andy, say it ain’t so! I really enjoy Relish. We don’t need another Mexican restaurant! Please don’t be a follower. We need a thoughtful menu of well-prepared food with seasonal and local sourcing, whenever possible. Why is that so hard to come by in the Roswell-Marietta area? Soooo sad.

Why another Mexican restaurant? Nothing beats high profit margins and low food costs. Atlanta Mexican food is priced much higher than in the southwest so it’s easy to make money for the operator.

Boy, Badgett sure lives up to the “Fickle” in his other restaurant’s name. I wonder how well-thought-out the business plan is. Something distinctive – like my fellow foodies are crying out for… say an UPscale meat-and-three – might be a better option than another Mexican joint. Sure, this group will put its mark on the place, but how many times can one reinvent??
I also would love to see All Y’alls remain, regardless.

I too think a meat and three would be great for Roswell with a choice of a salad bar too. I went to Relish a few times but thought it was expensive for what you got and not anything special. I did enjoy (thought terrible fattening) the pimento cheese fritters! I would love their recipe. The fried blackeye peas were good too in exchange for a snack such as popcorn but not really an appitizer. Some folks just do not want to eat in a funeral home!

I’ve been watching and wondering for a while, after they received national acclaim, how Relish could be so well loved and yet so slow (at least when I’ve been in). Lots to miss, but probably lots more to look forward to. One could have said “oh great another sandwich shop”, but The Fickle Pickle turned out to be anything but another sandwich shop. You ask me, I’m pretty sure there’s a reason for a Mexican joint on every corner. We all eat a ton of Mexican food and we it do multiple times a week. If Andy Badgett puts the same amount of thought and creativity into his new venture we all might find out what Autentico really means. Do really like the meat and 3 concept though. Perhaps for his next venture. Rumor has it there may be a food truck concept coming from The Condiment Group and or another Fickle Pickle. Time will tell.

I am a native Southerner, lived in SC, NC, VA, and GA. Frankly, I never have seen “fried pimento cheese”….ever. I did not like it – pimento cheese is great,but not served like that…fried.

The best restaurant Andy owned was his first, Asher on Canton. Roswell
needs another NICE restaurant for fine dining like Asher. We have plenty of Mexican restaurants, why would he want to even go there.

As for INC…the best of the best. It is NOT Mexican, it has a variety of items on the menu. They have a fantastic chef ! AJC gave this restaurant three stars…no other restaurant in Roswell’s “downtown” area ever received such a high rating in the AJC.
