Lunch? Get thee to the west side

Eggplant caponata with burrata at Bocado

Eggplant caponata with burrata at Bocado

There’s no getting around the fact that Atlanta’s not a great lunch town. Sure, there are plenty of places to grab a sandwich or burrito, or if you’re so inclined, Buford Highway offers a wealth of international options.

But what about having lunch prepared by a well known local chef? What about a lunch worth extending the lunch hour for, or one that’s worth going over budget for a mini-splurge?

It seems like all the best options these days are on the west side. Miller Union serves one of the best lunches in town thanks to the thoughtful menu, the lively scene and those great ice cream sandwiches that are lunch only on the menu. Bocado is my go to for an original sandwich, a small plate or a great bowl of soup. There’s also JCT Kitchen & Bar, which is always energizing, and Star Provisions.

I wish more of the city’s top restaurants served lunch. Are there any that I’m missing?

John, i’m surprised you haven’t been. I think you’d really enjoy it. I’ve been hooked ever since I ventured over for some chicken heart tacos and now its a once a week kind of thing.

Supposedly they will be adding some interesting things to the menu…chicken feet, crickets, cocks cone, pork jowl. Never tried many of these but am definitely curious.

Yes, Tiny Bistro is a gem. Meatloaf with mashed potato, cheddar, and bacon all in a sandwich, but the reuben, tuna salad and egg salad sandwiches are yummy too. Also has fresh sides like cucumber salad, broccoli salad and the thai chili slaw is amazing when they have it.

I’m anxiously awaiting the launch of Empire State South’s tiffin program (http://www.empirestatesouth.com/lunch-boxes). Hopefully the chef changeover won’t affect their plans but the web site has said “These will be available to order in the next couple of weeks!” for more than a couple of weeks.

A few of my favorite lunches:
- C’om on Buford Highway: short ribs with fragrant rice
- Social Resto, Downtown: bistro steak (steak frites) with a side of dijon mustard
- Reuben’s Deli, Downtown: the Eastsider sandwich. So. Freakin. Good.
- Pacci, Midtown: wild mushroom cast-iron pizza

Dunwoody/N Fulton – Wright’s Sandwich Shoppe, Com Dunwoody, and Wasabi House are all in the same area (along with the Old Hickory House). John, I have liked your work for years and generally agree with most of it. I have always been amazed at all AJC food critics love of Buford Hwy. I am not saying you cant find good food there but one generally does not like to lug an AK47 to lunch for protection nor enjoy the 60-70 health department ratings. Over 15 years ago the AJC in writing on one Chinese resturant in Chamblee said in the review ‘if you bring your own knife and fork, ignore the 60 health department rating, wipe the stains off of the plates and not slip on the dirty fllors, then you will enjoy the best chinese food in Atlanta. Good Post John! These “Best ” blogs are fun. It actually jogs my memory of places I have not been to in awhile. I would like to throw into the ring Taqueria Del Ray in Buford Highway across from Pine Tree Plaza where Bo Bo Garden my second entry is. Taqueria Del Ray is also open 24/7. I love watching home made tortillas being made in front of you. I also love the free caddy filled with assorted home-made salsa’s and limes placed on your table when you order. I always get the fajita’s and assorted mini and regular sized taco’s but have gotten there seafood soup bowls. They have one that is $18.95 and must be over a pound of new zealand mussels, oysters, shrimp, white fish, scallops and lobster in a delicious and very hearty broth. I also love that I am usually the only one ini the joint that speaks English. The flat screens playing mexican football and soap operas adds to the authenticity of Taqueria Del Ray. Late nights on the weekends they have mariachi’s playing music table to table and vendors selling trinkets. Bo Bo Garden is Chinese and awesome….. Great hot pots, vegetables. big bowls of soups.

I think the West Side is definately booming right now. I agress Tiny Bistro is a hidden gem. But West Egg and Ormsby also do a great lunch.

Canoe in Vinings has a fantastic lunch. Also, there is almost never a wait for a table since it is known more for dinner. However, there is a great selection of sandwiches, salads and entrees all available for about half of what a dinner entree would cost. When I lived in the area I would go there at least 2-3 times a week.

While I’m thinking about that area of town, OK Cafe on West Paces Ferry and Muss & Turner’s in Vinings both have fantastic lunches as well.

‘Cue is ridiculously overrated. The meat is dry and the sides are tasteless. The Brunswick “Stew” is actually Brunswick Soup. Don’t waste your time or money. Blah.

I wish there were more jobs in Midtown/Downtown Atlanta so I could walk to get lunch! Who the hell thought it would be a good idea to build giant suburban office parks where you have to drive to a place to eat lunch. It’s really annoying and the fact that people prefer to live that way is disturbing.

Yeah, right....but I like Nordstroms

Cafe at Pharr in Buckhead. Walnut chicken salad plate or on a host of different breads is to die for. Can’t beat the yogurt rolls either. Parking can be a bit of a challenge but worth the effort.

John – you asked for Dunwoody, N. Fulton area. N. Fulton – I go to Marlow’s Tavern, Le Mekong, and Grace 17.20 for lunch. Relish in Roswell. The Patio and Not Enough Thyme are popular with the tennis crowds. Mittie’s and Wildflour are also good.

Matthews in Tucker. They have pork chops on Thursday that will make your mama sneek home and put on your plate and tell you with a straight face that she cooked them. They also have some of the best fried chicken in the whole country.

No Matthews for me. Went once years ago and watched roaches crawling around the glass of the food displays. Never went back and decided to not say anything to all my co-workers because we had a very short lunchtime and I thought what they don’t know won’t hurt them. Well, one big mouth had to tell everyone when we got back to the office, so I was the one ostracized. Stupid me. I ate the lunch but wasn’t over joyed with it. Maybe they should look at where the food is being served from.

Iknowanidiot, if you are afraid of the competition from locations OTP just say so. The AJC covers the area of metro Atlanta and I am sure John Kessler includes them with his comment’s of ATLANTA. Now just TRY to act like a grown up and stop your pouting.

Dear mr Kessler, Do you know who operated a wonderful little lunch, sandwich shop in the rear of a bottle shop on the lower level of Lenox Square on the east side. It was before that part was enclosed as it opened to the parking area close to The Storehouse. It was around 1970 and I would love to know the ingredients of the spread they used on their roast beef sandwiches. It was an herbal spread of some sort. It was a great place. Standing room only and I don’t remember any tables. Just order, pick up and go.

Roswell – Rice Thai (love that red curry) & Fickle Pickle (might be too ladyish for you, John)

I still miss Hofer’s Bakery in Sandy Springs. They had the BEST sandwiches when I used to work near there in the late ’80’s. YUM!!

Cleveland Style Deli isn’t a top Atlanta Restaurant however they do offer the best lunch sandwiches downtown Atlanta. The Cleveland Style Corned Beef or Rueben Sandwich is great, the Gourmet Turkey Burgers are the delicious. And they they top offer pork, chicken or fish with Cole Slaw & BarBQ Sauce. Don’t forget to grab a “Betta Than Sex Cup Cake” for dessert. I forgot to mention the Turkey Chili. Yummy.

Mirage Persian in Sandy Springs is a great place for lunch. Great fresh kebab and rice entrees all served with cup of hot lentil soup. Their kebeb wraps are a great value, all below $9 and again with a cup of soup. I specially like the lamb and chicken kebab wraps.
