Who can tell me what this speckled, green-and-orange orb of food is, what’s inside and — most importantly — where I sampled it?

Avocado dome, covered with smelt roe in spicy mayo and salmon roe, typically stuffed with salmon or crab. Looks like the excellent version that is served at Haru Ichiban?

Maybe a cucumber-covered timbale or custard mound, definitely red roe on top, may sprinkles of sweet or hot dotting the mound and juice?

Ok, I’ll agree with others that it looks to be avocado slices (or cucumber) drenched in a creamy mayo sauce made with masago roe and served with a dollop of salmon roe on top. I’ll guess that inside the pile is either crabmeat or sushi-grade rice. Either way – - yum, yum. What’s equally interesting to me is the plating – - very plain white saucer and just an ordinary spoon. Nothing fancy. Either you got this at some super minimalist Japanese restaurant or some super progressive school cafeteria.

Now that I look at it again it looks a tad obscene. Like something Captain Kirk would have gone after.

Sushi and Darktoaster for the win. I’ll have more on Haru Ichiban next week.
Bamafan – If that’s true in your case, I might consult a doctor…
Kev – Really!
