Where are the good fruit desserts?

Market1Some dessert menus skew toward chocolate — a basic flavor pole around which the ancillary flavors of nuts, butterscotch and marshmallow revolve. If there is a fruit dessert, it will likely be something heavier, such as pear-caramel cake, or a chocolate and banana confab.

I find these kinds of desserts easy to pass on after dinner. I love them, but really think such dense sweets taste better in the afternoon with a cup of coffee than following a big meal.

But I am a sucker for fruit-based desserts. When I went to Market Buckhead recently to write up a burger of the week, I couldn’t resist this concoction. It’s a coconut flan with candied kumquats, lime whipped cream and toasted coconut. What an amazing combination of flavors! I particularly loved the way the barely sweetened cream flecked with lime zest added such a sparkly top note.

True, it was pretty rich. I either resisted eating it all or thought about resisting it all, but this was one of the better desserts I’ve encountered in a long time.

Where are some other great fruit desserts to try around town?

At Taste of Marietta a Brazilian place called Minas Emporium had a sensational passion fruit mousse. It won Most Unque Taste.
Website says they have a store and cafe on Delk Rd. and on Roswell Rd. in Sandy Springs.

Do jelly donuts count?

Banana with nutella on it is pretty good. Cheap too!

Try the Mango Pavlova at JOEL – very light and delicately delicious and I know back in the fall H&F had an apple empanda of sorts that was fantastic, though not exactly light.

Fried peach pie with vanilla ice cream at Relish in Roswell. (Their pear and almond tart is also yummy!) Yet one more reason you need to get there, John! : )

I’m not a real big dessert person (which folks who have actually seen how fat I am will find hard to believe lol) but I like the Fogo de Chão Signature Papaya Cream. I don’t know though if it really classifies as a dessert like you are talking about John.

Fogo tasted much better until their meals got over 50 bucks lol, but that dessert….. shake? is simply awesome. I need to go there and belly up to the bar just to get one of those now that I think about it………..

Try the fresh strawberry shortcake at The Taste of Dixie. An old classic with a subtle twist. Everyone who tries it has raved about it, and they’re right. It’s sinfully delicious.

I second ATLFoodie’s mango pavlova at Joel recommendation. It popped into my head the minute I read the title of this entry. One of the best desserts ever. And I don’t even usually go for dessert.

Try it.
