Tasty rib tips with “Boss Sauce”

photo 2If you have any trouble finding Ms. Betty’s House of Ribs in Eastland Heights, just roll down your window when you’re getting close and let your nose guide you. That sweet smell of barbecue smoke perfumes the neighborhood.

This place is a true rib shack — a double-wide trailer set in a parking lot with one plastic table inside, a counter with a pass-through window to the kitchen and a sign warning customers not to fiddle with the air conditioner. The smokehouse is out back.

On a friend’s recommendation I ordered this rib tip dinner, which was a huge portion for $8. On the side: super cheesy-crusty mac and cheese and mildly seasoned but extremely tender collard greens.

photoI also ordered a rib dinner ($8.99, right) and a half chicken ($5.25).

The ribs and the rib tips had a great flavor — imbued with plenty of smoke and well seasoned. I also loved the house “boss sauce” that was an unconventional sweet soy glaze. (The other choice is a yellow mustard sauce.) I did think they both tasted reheated; I’d like to find out more about Ms. Betty’s smoking schedule and get them when they’re fresh from the smoker.

The chicken was fantastic — really moist and, again, gorgeously smoky.

This is a great place to know about if you’re anywhere nearby (East Atlanta, Ormewood Park) and hankering for barbecue.

Ms. Betty’s is awesome! I live in the area and go there quite a bit. Granted, it’s not much to look at on the outside, but that’s part of the charm. Great ribs.

Get real John. If it ain’t vinegar based sauce, it don’t belong on ribs or BBQ. Ms. Betty’s is a joke. One time Dad and I went to try it out and realized their sauce wasn’t vinegar based. Well I got sent to the truck to grab the spare bottle Dad keeps and when I got back those jerks had told Dad he could leave. Basically they were defensive when Dad questioned them about their sauce. That taught us a valuable lesson about going out to eat.

I ran into a bona-fide rib shack on the road between Tallahassee, FL and Thomasville, GA a few years ago. The smoker was outside and the eatin’ section was in a 1960’s singlewide. Some of the best BBQ me and the wife ever et. We also happened to be the only caucasian faces in the place on a Sunday after church. That’s OK, Good BBQ knows no color. Oh, and I had a choice of vinegar or sweet sauce – I guess they wanted to keep Tyler happy.

Good BBQ is good BBQ; it doesn’t matter what base the sauce has if it’s tasty. And if it’s REAL good BBQ, it doesn’t require much if any sauce at all.

“The Grinch” well why did they have a problem with a customer putting their own sauce on food that they purchased? I would think that standards would be somewhat relaxed seeing that this is a double wide trailer and not the ritz-carlton. I mean if they bought the food then what do they care? What happened to the customer is always right? Everybody and their brother knows that tomato based sauce does not belong on REAL bbq anyway.

My dad makes Shrimp-B-Q that is glorious. His vinegar based Cajun Seafood Sauce just compliments the hours spent preparing the meat and shrimp to perfection. Now while technically his dish is ‘Shrimp-B-Q’, he likes to call it ‘Butt-down-B-Q’. Reason being is that once you eat some of it, you’ll sit your butt down and you ain’t movin the rest of the afternoon.

Never tried or heard of Ms. Betty’s but the best bbq that I’ve found since I’ve lived in Atlanta is JJ’s Rib Shack on Campbellton Rd, in SW Atl. Definitely nothing fancy to look at, outside or in. The meat is always freshly smoked and tender(rib tips or ribs), the side items are always great, as long as they don’t run out, and the sweet, thick and just a little spicy bbq is to die for!!! The chicken is great too. Everything is grilled right there on the grills on the side of the building. The only negatives are they sometimes run out of food early, and the wait can be EXTREMELY LONG, but it’s NEVER deterred us from waiting. Never make it home without eating some of the ribs in the car!

JJ’s Rib Shack on Campbellton Rd in SW Atl, has the BEST BBQ. The ribs, rib tips, and chicken have all never disappointed me. The sweet, thick, and a little spicy bbq sauce, is to die for!! I can eat the sauce with just bread! The side options, though only about 5 or 6, are always good. All food is prepared on site, and all the meat is grilled/smoked right next to the building. The little “shack/building” is nothing impressive at all, but what comes out of it is! The only negatives to JJ’s is that they sometimes run out of food early, and there is usually a relatively long wait. Which just means we go early, and have patience! IT’S ALWAYS SO WORTH IT! Never made it home once without eating some of the ribs in the car!

The best BBQ I ever ate was in Columbus, Ga. – called Macon Road BBQ.It was in the middle of nowhere in a tar paper shack.

While I am willing to try all BBQ sauces, the ones I enjoy include vinegar. Of course, my fave is my own, a recipe passed down from my father. I say, to each to own. On the Tyler debate, I would imagine the reason his Dad was invited to leave could have been how he acted. I don’t imagine any restaurant caring if you add some of your own to your food,but I bet they do care how you act! Anyone consider that? Some people just aren’t willing to step out of their box and try something different. I have experienced many great foods I thought I would never like based on looks and description.

I prefer a vinegar based sauce and don’t care for a tomato based sauce but if I go somewhere that doesn’t have what I want, I just pick what I think is the closest to my preference and deal with it.

The best ribs are at my house cooked with mesquite wood and accompanied by my wife’s potato salad baked beans and her homemade BBQ sauce. I just can’t eat be satisfied at a restaurant anymore.

You know, I looked up the definition of barbecue and I not one time did I see that a sauce had to be made a particular way for it to be considered barbecue sauce. I saw references to different types of styles. Most of the time the only reference to a sauce was a “seasoned” sauce. To each their own I say. Be creative. There may be another sauce waiting to be created that beats all. Enjoy yourselves and good eating!

John, I live up Bouldercrest a piece from Betty’s (which has been through three or four or five incarnations since I’ve lived here), and I agree that the food there is wonderful.
One area in which I find myself disagreeing with you, is your bothering to explain to Fix the basic rules of grammar after he proved himself to be not only poorly-educated in grammar, but courtesy as well.

John, have you tried Community Q on Clairmont (same strip mall as Bojanic)? The brisket and mac and cheese is so good it will make you cry. They also have the BEST black eyed peas I have ever had in my whole entire life …. cooked with big chunks of ham and rosemary OMG so good…. BUT they are not on the menu and they only have them sometimes…. in my book, best Q in the city. Their ribs ROCK also…. OMG I am craving some now! Too bad it is so late… maybe lunch tomorrow.

My favorite part of eating BBQ is the regional differences in sauces. Each one has it’s time and place. I personally love the Memphis style dry rub on ribs, a honey-based sauce on chicken and all kinds on pulled pork. I grew up around sweet sauce, but really enjoy the East North Carolina vinegar style too. I do agree that great BBQ can be eaten with no sauce.

I will have to check her place out.

I love Ms. Betty’s ribs! I no longer live over there and will still drive over there when I get a craving for her ribs. She is incredibly sweet and the old adage is true, you can taste love in her cooking.

I have to agree w/ Poca, JJ’s Rib Shack is worth the drive and the wait. And if the BBQ is really good then it really doesn’t need sauce. I say that because I always get my sauce on the side even @ JJ’s. And I totally detest BBQ baste in sauce…YUCK!!!!

Bar-B-Que Sauce…….I like sauce also. The sweet kind I will leave for others. It is rare that you find great Q. But when you do ,leave the sauce in the truck. A great rub and well prepared is the true meaning of Bar-B-Que IMHO. But if you must use sauce, wait till the food is on the table.

OK — I’ve nixed a few of the more vulgar and combative comments that don’t really have anything to do with the subject. But my feeling is that anyone who wants to talk about the BBQ he makes at home, anyone who wants to argue the grammar and syntax of a post, and anyone who wants to pour a little vinegar sauce over these proceedings should be allowed to snipe.

I am disgusted with the filthy language that goes with commenting on a fun topic – food! I’ve lived in Atlanta over 40 years and ohhh….if we could go back to the courteous and lovely way people treated each other when I arrived here. When I read some of the language on here, it only reinforces my thoughts that we have more than enough lowlifes in Atlanta. I really should ignore them, but it’s a sad commentary about this city. you have never had ribs until you’ve had WW BOSS. THEY WILL BE MOVING BACK TO DECATUR NEXT TO REDLOBSTER ON CANDLER RD IN FEBRUARY. THE RIBS FALL OFF THE BONES. The sauce is very thick and rich and spicy and hangs on the bone. Sometimes I just ask for the sauce. It is finger licking good. THE RIB TIPS ARE GREAT THEY ALSO HAVE VEGGIES AND THE PEACH COBBLER IS AS GOOD AS GRANDMAS. BREAKFAST is also served there, very traditional Southern fare.

I’m gonna put in a plug for my “local,” Wyatt’s BBQ on Memorial Drive at Wyman, just spitting distance from Ann’s Snack Bar (Home of the Ghetto Burger). Fantastic ribs, in particular, if you time it right. They start smoking *early* in the morning and you can get them fresh around midday. (In the evening, on the other hand, you’re apt to see your slab get pulled from a rubbermaid container. Ick.)

The place isn’t much more than a tumbling down single-wide augmented by a screen porch and of course, an attached smoker/chimney. But oh so good.

I have to say D&D BBQ on Sylvan Rd it sits right in the fork it used to be a gas station. The Ribs and Rib Tips are great, as well as the sides..they also have great chicken!!
I try to go once a week, but I usually end up going twice so I can get a look at the Young Man behind the counter that makes the best sauce and banana pudding..

If you want to taste some NC style pulled pork BBQ with a wonderful vinegar based sauce, then you must try Dre’s Place BBQ in Villa Rica. Its just off I-20, and I go there whenever I am on the way to Carrollton. The sauce reminds me of some great BBQ I used to eat up in the mountains of North Carolina. *yum* I just need another reason to travel back that way again. (I believe it’s closed on Mondays)

I prefer Shane’s. Everytime I go there it’s good never dried out. They also have a couple of sauces from mild to hot to choose from, and I luv their peach tea, but I can do without their sides and peach cobbler.

They have an outpost location in Johns Creek where you can dine and enjoy bbq. Their banana puddin used to be good but they altered the recipe and added a mousse topping.

Tyler (and his Dad) sound like jerks …Low Country is the best for pulled pork … Dave Poe’s in Marietta is the best beef brisket … and the Rib Ranch has the best beef ribs “Fred Flintstone size” … I prefer vinegar based sauces mostly, but I also enjoy good rubs on ribs, mustard based sauce on chicken, and I’ve even had some tasty spicy tomato based sauces; variety can be the spice of life!

Best BBQ I’ve ever had can be found at Dinosaur BBQ in Syracuse, NY.

That said, I’ll make a list from the suggestions on this thread and do some comparison shopping…
