No surprise — Kevin Gillespie voted fan favorite on “Top Chef”

ggdine.0327+01As expected, Atlanta’s Kevin Gillespie was voted “fan favorite” by the viewers of “Top Chef.”

The distinction was announced on Bravo TV’s reality-programming talk show, “Watch What Happens Live,” hosted by the soon-to-be-annoying Andy Cohen. It came with a $10,000 prize.

Cohen and guest Sarah Jessica Parker spoke to both Gillespie and runner-up Bryan Voltaggio via Skype when they made the announcement. Gillespie was at Woodfire Grill after finishing service on another sold-out evening.

“Somebody’s got to stand up for the pale-faced redheaded kids,” Gillespie joked after Parker opened the envelope revealing the winner.

Cohen asked Gillespie if his impending divorce in any way affected his performance during the finals. Ever the gentleman, Gillespie said that it made it a bit hard to concentrate but winner Michael Voltaggio had the better showing.

Gillespie’s total winnings on the show, despite not taking the title? A cool $55,000.

YAY! I am so happy to hear that Kevin won this. He was my favorite. He is such a professional and has a heart of gold. If only everybody operated with such integrity as this man does.

Those of us down here at Locust Grove Elementary School and Henry County High School who grew up with Kevin are proud of him also. That’s where he real roots are; may he never forget that.

I was shocked Kevin didn’t win top chef. He won more challenges and prizes than any of the rest. His food looked delicious! Soooooo happy he won fan favorite. How could he not. Good for you, you deserved it!

Soon-to-be-annoying Andy Cohen? He bugs me to no end. I didn’t stay up to watch the show just out of spite, and I got the news of Kevin’s winning from your blog this morning. Readers at The Baltimore Sun’s Reality Check blog thank you. We’ve been recapping all season:

I still feel Bryan deserves it.

A deserved honor, which is particularly impressive as the judges said this was the best group ever. Kevin, you did Atlanta proud by your balance of intensity and humor. You seemed to enjoy yourself, which helps other people enjoy you. Congratulations. One for our side!

This was easily the most talented group I have seen on any Top Chef season. The final three guys all could have taken the title. Kevin gave the best all around peformance but the two brothers were right there with him the whole season. Atlanta is proud to have Kevin! I would venture a guess that being the fan favorite meant more to Kevin than the opinions of the judges. He has 100% confidence in his food and rightly so.

Kevin should have won…hands down!!! He makes Southern food with a touch of class. That is truly imaginative!! As for his divorce….shake it off Kevin…go find Jennifer and start a new restaurant that will be SRO every single night!!!

Kevin showed his true southern gentleman spirit and remained true to his cooking style through out the competition and it was amazing all the challenges he won. His dishes were consistently picked by some of the top chefs in the world so I was surprised that he did not win. Both of the Voltaggio brothers were very talented and Michael was quite the risk taker and I guess that is what impressed the judges in the end.

nothing “soon-to-be” about Cohen. He’s incredibly annoying. I’m not pleased he’s weaseled his way onto Top Chef.

They didn’t announce fan fave on the reunion show so you tune into their newest creation……..I THINK IT SUCKS!!! Why keep it a mystery and why force us to watch something we don’t want to watch. Thank goodness for the posts……rock it Kevin!!!

Kevin has obviously been the fan’s favorite from the get-go. As for Andy Cohen, I hope to never endure that insufferable twit again and the only reason I risked watching a nanosecond of that slackjawed nitwit was to see and hear Kevin. SJP came off as an empty-headed fluff as well.
And bringing up the dissolution of the Gillespie marriage illustrated perfectly what my late father would have said about Cohen: the man has no papers.
Kevin Gillespie: talent, integrity and class all the way. Can’t wait to visit Woodfire Grill!

Art stole my thoughts…. Kevin was the fan favorite because he was a class act and decent guy. He also cooks food that appeals to allot of real people. Hearty and Fresh….
