The unsinkable Calavino Donati — late of Calavino’s Soul Kitchen in East Atlanta, Calavino’s in Oakhurst, and the pioneering Roman Lily Café in the Old Fourth Ward — is back.
Donati and her partner, songstress Doria Roberts, have opened Urban Cannibals Bodega + Bites — a market and deli in East Atlanta Village.

Donati
Donati prepares daily specials, such as turkey poblano meatloaf with jalapeno tequila gravy, kale simmered in homemade chicken stock and baked polenta with spicy chipotle marinara sauce.
Donati will alert customers to the daily menu through her Twitter feeds and Facebook status updates.
Another interesting feature: Urban Cannibals offers CSA packages from Destiny Organics, which Donati supplements with homemade sauces and spreads, breads and desserts.
I would have to say of all the characters I’ve met on this job, I’ve never come across a restaurateur with such personal warmth and such a desire to feed people as Donati. She really has a wonderful spirit.
Have you been? I’d love to hear about the food.
Urban Cannibals: 477 Flat Shoals Ave. 404-230-9865. Closed Mondays.

Roman Lily Cafe was wonderful, Calavino’s in Oakhurst was better and I can only imagine how delicious Urban Cannibals must be. Looks like I’ll be heading there for dinner tomorrow night!

Roman Lily’s was awesome. It was the only refuge in O4W for us that worked in Studioplex in 2000! I am headed to Urban Cannibals!

Well, you can thank my wife Doria for keeping me afloat. She is as motivated, talented, sucsessful and driven as I am. Without someone like her at my side I would have packed up and run away to the beach.
Instead we decided to combine both of our talents to give a community that we have grown fond of something they needed and have been asking for.
You can also thank her for the brilliant idea of offering CSA boxes to our customers as a way of offering fresh organic produce without the constant waste and subsequent cost a lot of smaller operations incur when trying to stock perishables without high volume. We thought it would be nice to offer one of our homemade products, including Doria’s baked goods (I can’t bake, too much measuring) as a way to conect the boxes to the Bodega.
She has also implemented a community outreach program. Each quarter she will announce and introduce a new non profit orginization, they will inform us of the needs they are faced with and when our customers volenteer they will recieve a discount at the store. But, she can tell you more about that so, jump on our facebook fan page to find out more. And as John mentioned, she will update you daily with our specials as well as progress (I also don’t type, too much spelling) I think she even posted kittens so hurry up and join before they all find homes.

It was unfortunate that Calavino’s had to close in EAV earlier this year, but I am certainly pleased to hear of the opening of Urban Cannibals and look forward to frequenting it.

We are SOOO excited to have Calavino and Doria back in the neighborhood! We’ve been to UC three times in its first week, once for staples, once to pick up turkey meatloaf (OH MY GAWD yum!), and once to get cheese when we ran out while making pizzas. Our pizza ended up even better when we substitute UC’s dill tarragon pesto for the pizza sauce! I’m so thankful to have a place to run to in the Village to grab last minute items! I love the option to grab homemade dinners to bring home – the ease of take out, the yumminess of homemade. And we all know Calavino can cook! Welcome back ladies!
