Tomo Japanese Restaurant to open in Buckhead

Great news for sushi lovers!

Tomo Japanese Restaurant — the excellent little spot in a Vinings strip mall — will soon get a whole lot more exposure when it moves the Ritz-Carlton Residences, currently under construction at 3630 Peachtree Road in Buckhead.

Tower0015 The new  mixed-use building (right) will have both office space and luxury residences, and is located just behind the Ritz-Carlton Hotel.

Cy Bickers, the architect who is doing the build out for Restaurants Consulting Group, says the new Tomo “will be a lot more high end [than the current one] but still have a comfortable atmosphere.”

Chef Tomohiro Naito, for his part, is keeping a little more mum about the plans because he hasn’t yet decided whether or not he’ll keep the current location, which has built a serious fan base. He’ll only say a regular customer facilitated the new venture.

I’m thrilled and would venture to say Tomo has emerged as my favorite sushi spot in Atlanta. It has the right mixture of warmth, creativity, impeccably fresh fish and variety that makes a top-level sushi experience memorable.

If you want to hear more on my thoughts on Tomo, you can watch this segment here of Atlanta & Company’s Metromix Meals  on WXIA. In this segment, which aired a couple of days ago, I compare my experiences with two other diners. I have to admit I haven’t even seen it yet because, you know, looking at video of yourself feels skeezy.

Stand down Tomo, STAND DOWN! Please dont give into Buckhead pretentiousness and prices! Vinings has supported you for years, I should know, I live in the Condos down the street and have visited many times. Shame on you for wanting to move, especially to the Ritz residences blaaa, no character just snob.

i remember years ago John, when MF Midtown first opened. You wrote your first article about them, how finally a real sushi place in Atlanta!!! I still love MF and it’s still my favorite til this day. Somethings are hit and miss just like any restaurant. But it’s hands down the best!!!

Tomo is good. I’m not a huge fan of the sweet sauces. But quality of the nigiri and sashimi is good when I’m in the vinings area. Not sure how they’re going to do with Buckhead crowd. It’s a totally different ball game.

Since the first article, sushi restaurants seems to be growing like kudzu. It seems every restaurant serves sushi – Strip, Shout, Room, Ra, Steel,Kroger/Publix, etc. I feel it’s so over done and over played!!!

I’m ready for some originality!!!

Cool. Have to try Tomo. How about a review on say your top 10 sushi places in Atlanta? (or however many if less than ten that you find palatable)

The atmosphere in Tomo’s current location provided for a very unique and accommodating dinner. It will be hard to emulate that with a larger space, and most likely, a less personal experience. Long live Tomo! Wherever it may be.
