Food News Atlanta: Elton’s pooch cake, the city goes pizza crazy, 30 Tables is official

I get the nose, I get the nose!!

Karen Portaleo, the brilliant cake artist at Highland Bakery, fabricated this frosted dog in drag for Elton John’s birthday, which is today. (Click the picture to enlarge it.) The cake is modeled after his cocker spaniel, Arthur.

I met Portaleo a couple of weeks ago when we were both judging the “Great American Baking Contest” — a fundraiser for the Georgia chapter of Share Our Strength. We were charged with the kids’ division, and gave first prize to 9-year-old Decaturite Carter Hanna for his peppermint velvet cupcakes. (Note to self: get recipe.) 

In other news — Varasano’s Pizzeria opens today in the Mezzo Atlanta building at 2171 Peachtree Road. This is the first professional effort by pizza obsessive Jeff Varasano, who perfected his recipes over years of underground pizza parties at his Buckhead townhome. Within a certain food-obsessed demimonde, Varasano has become a kind of Internet-era folk hero. His online recipe is the web’s premier pizza meme

Atlanta seems to be headed for its pizza days. Fritti’s new pizzaiolo has been getting rave reviews, most recently from the AJC’s Meridith Ford Goldman

Meanwhile, blogger Jimmy Sobeck over at Eat It, Atlanta has just completed a pizza tour of the city with reviews of 18 pies. I love the ecumenical nature of his survey — everything from the pizza at Costco to Dynamic Dish went up for consideration.

His favorite? Shorty’s

By the way, check out Eat It, Atlanta if you haven’t yet. It’s a great, unpredictable mix of real-people restaurant reviews and unlikely cooking projects. 

Finally, Concentrics Restaurants (One MIdtown Kitchen, Two Urban Licks, etc.) has officially announced its plans to debut a “third time’s the charm” restaurant, 30 Tables, in the cursed Glenn Hotel space downtown that sent B.E.D. to the deep sleep and put Maxim Prime out to pasture. It’s coming in April with a menu of “classic American fare tinged with unique, seasonal ingredients and bold, yet familiar, flavors.” Tinge…seasonal…bold…familiar: sounds like beets.

The big news is that Concentrics will reopen the Glenn’s most excellent rooftop lounge as 11 Stories, also in April. I hope they have good cocktails…

Yikes! I’m not a squeamish eater but the thought of that dog’s head actually being a cake that will be eaten is kinda weird. Great work on that cake though! Can’t wait until I hit Varasano’s. From what I hear, he’s been at the restaurant perfecting the new oven for a few months now.
