Beer Pick: Max Security brewed for Craft Beer Week

Beer Pick

Max Security

Max Lager’s, Atlanta

$5/pint at Max Lager’s, 320 Peachtree St., 404-525-4400,

Profile: Max Lager’s brewmaster John Roberts teamed with Glenn Golden of JailHouse Brewing in Hampton to create an exciting collaborative beer in honor of American Craft Beer Week, May 16-22. For Max Security, Roberts and Golden decided to fiddle with the formula for a schwarzbier, a black German-style lager. They used cherry wood smoked malt, rye malt and molasses. The result is a complex dark beer that is surprisingly easy to drink, with woody, fruity notes, a touch of sweetness and a subtle smoke character.

Pair with: The woody, smoky flavors of Max Security are a natural match for smoked or wood-grilled meats, such as brisket, pulled pork, ribs or steak. Or try it with grilled mushrooms.

craftbeer001Max Lager’s will be tapping Max Security on May 16, kicking off a string of America Craft Beer Week events through May, 22.

American Craft Beer Week events are underway in all 50 states, the largest-ever celebration of the more than 1,700 small and independent craft brewers responsible for the vibrant and growing U.S. craft beer scene:

In Atlanta, craft brewers, brew pubs and beer bars are joining the festivities with special beers, tap takeovers and even a beer breakfast.

Here are a few highlights:

Brick Store Pub in Decatur will be pouring American craft beer all week, capped by a yard sale and beer breakfast, 8 a.m. – noon May 21st, featuring old glassware and other goodies from the beer vault. Breakfast beers on tap will include Terrapin Wake & Bake, Founders KBS, Great Divide Espresso Yeti, Sweetwater Mean Joe Bean, Southern Tier Mokah and Javah:

Leon’s Full Service in Decatur will be pouring American craft beer all week. On May 16, it’s an Allagash and New Belgium event with the likes of rare Lips of Faith and Vrienden sour and wild ales. On May 19, it’s “Locals Only” draft night, with all 14 lines dedicated to Georgia beers from Jailhouse, Red Brick, Sweetwater, Terrapin and Wild Heaven:

Midway Pub in East Atlanta Village has a full week of events planned, including keg tappings of Founders Backwoods Bastard at 5 p.m. on May 16 and Bell’s Hopslam on May 17, a Craft Beer Camaraderie Tap Takeover on May 19 and a preview of the new Double IPA from Red Brick on May 20:

The Porter Beer Bar in Little Five Points will feature nightly specials and tap takeovers, with He’Brew specialty night May 16, a Smuttynose takeover May 19, a Great Divide takeover May 20, and a Terrapin takeover May 21 offering a reprise of the brewery’s entire Side Project series:

Georgia Ale & Lager Sirens and Duck-Rabbit Craft Brewery are hosting a tasting at Thinking Man Tavern in Decatur at 7 p.m. May 18:

I’m hoping to make the Brick Store event on Saturday. If there’s glassware to buy and vintage beer to be had, it’s too good to pass up.
