Beer Pick: Terrapin Hoptaneous Combustion

Terrapin Hoptaneous Combustion

Terrapin Beer Co., Athens

$9.99/ 22-ounce bottle; also available on draft at select beer bars.
Hoptaneus Combustion
Profile: Hoptaneous Combustion is the final release in Terrapin’s Georgia Theater Sessions, a series of four limited-edition beers aimed at helping rebuild the historic Athens music venue that was gutted by fire in 2009.

This time, brewer Brian “Spike” Buckowski presents a playful take on the tragedy with a smoked double IPA. The hybrid style is different, to say the least. But the addition of Weyermann smoked malt creates some exciting aroma and flavor fractals with a blend of Warrior, Nugget, Centennial and Simcoe hops adding bright citrus and spicy notes to this strong (9.3 percent alcohol by volume), sticky brew.

Pair with: Spicy barbecue, Mexican mole, tacos al pastor or pasta with Amatriciana sauce would make good matches for big, bright, smoky Hoptaneous Combustion.

I had this at Taco Macs when it was launched last week. It was awesome. I can’t wait to find it in the bottle for home consumption….

Definitely enjoyed it and it really grew on me. Has anyone seen the 3rd installation of the GA Theater series in stores or did I just miss it?

FO, the third was Sound Czech, a Czech Pilsner. It came out just about a month and a half ago. The first two seemed well spaced out, but these last ones came right on top of each other. Haven’t had 3 or 4 yet, but I’m looking forward to Hoptaneous.

Great cause and my interest Is piqued by the smoked malt. Any idea where it might be available around town? Hop City? Greens?

All that said, I’m growing tired of the IPA craze. Mountains of hops doesn’t necessarily equal good.

Ben – It should be available in bottle all over metro Atlanta later this week. Already on draft at many places. Some Sound Czech may be left, too. But I would call first on both counts.
