Border is secure, but Congress won’t pass immigration reform

WASHINGTON —As commencement season gets underway in earnest, as young adults take their places in formal ceremonies marking their achievements, a small number of them hide a delicate secret that shadows their accomplishments and limits their options: They are illegal immigrants. They live in fear of deportation. They cannot travel freely, seek the best jobs or sign up for military service.

Even if they have just completed college, even if they have excellent grades, even if they have mastered chemistry or mathematics or computer science, they will encounter immediate and daunting barriers. It doesn’t matter that some offer skills for which companies are desperate; they still aren’t likely to find themselves in demand.

And that’s just crazy. The nation’s immigration policy is irrational — warped by nativism, finger-pointing and political cowardice. As President Barack Obama noted in a speech yesterday, the economy would be helped — not hurt — by  immigration reform.

But Obama also knows perfectly well that Congress won’t pass a comprehensive immigration reform proposal anytime soon. Republicans refused to support George W. Bush’s proposal to modernize immigration law, and the GOP base has only grown more xenophobic since then.

Just take a look at GOP-controlled state legislatures around the country, which are rushing to adopt proposals modeled after the Arizona law that recalls apartheid. Even Georgia’s recently-passed Arizona-“lite” is certain to increase the harassment of motorists and workers with tan complexions and Spanish surnames.

Nativist sentiments have deepened despite Obama’s clear record of amping up border security. If conservatives were waiting for a less-porous border before they embraced immigration reform, they’d be lining up to support a bill: the border is more secure than ever before.

Apparently believing that conservatives would support a comprehensive bill if they were reassured about border protections, Obama has sent National Guard troops and drone surveillance aircraft to the Southern boundary. He hired more border agents. He has pursued an aggressive policy of deportations — rounding up more illegal immigrants than his predecessor.

But the hostility toward illegal immigrants isn’t based on any rational fear of cross-border narco-violence or jihadist-inspired terrorism. It’s based on deep-seated prejudices stoked by a faltering economy and an increasingly diverse population. Many native-born Americans wrongly believe that illegal workers have sapped our strength, reversed our economic fortunes and set us on a course toward decline. But let’s not kid ourselves: We aren’t prepared to grant legal status even to those who are ambitious, resourceful and hardworking — who would give to the country a great deal more than they would take from it.

Last December, a GOP Senate filibuster blocked the DREAM Act, which would have granted a path to legalization to about one million young adults who were brought here illegally when they were kids. To qualify, they would have had to complete two years of college or two years of service in the Armed Forces.

The DREAM Act might have passed if Democrats had pursued it earlier in Obama’s presidency, when they were more secure in their control of Congress. But at the time, immigration advocates opposed any remedy short of legalization for the entire population of 11 million or so. Their resistance to smaller steps was a mistake.

The president is now under intense pressure from Latino activists to use his executive authority to shelter those illegal workers who have not committed crimes since their entry. Some pro-immigrant groups have zeroed in on young adults who would be eligible for the DREAM Act as candidates for a policy of benign neglect by customs officials.

The president has resisted, but he ought to take the request more seriously. While Congress panders to the xenophobic impulses of frightened voters, the country is squandering some of its best and brightest. Obama could salvage some of that talent with a policy of selective deportation.

I guess I’m the only one who remembers Amnesty for most “undocumented” workers was granted via 1986 Immigration Reform Act.

If the only taxes were Sales taxes, I don’t think folks would care where other folks are from.

For once I find that I agree with barry the boy blunder. Moats with are a great idea, it would please those of us who want border control and it would please the bedwetting treehuggers also. We could move the gators and crocs from Fla. and La. to the new moats without harming a scale on their pretty little backs. Problem solved. The only ones that would have a problem with it would be the illegals to be and eric holders gunrunners. Let’s do it.

” They live in fear of deportation” They are illegal ! Mommy and Daddy are illegal!
Let them stay? So what about Mommy and Daddy, can’t send them back. that would be separating family’s. So now we would have at lest 3 staying in the country!
Let all three stay? What about grandparents might as well let them in right?
Let those who come the honest way come and let those who are illegal live in fear like all criminals live in fear of getting found out!

There’s nothing quite like a sense of accomplishment and moral superiority for patriotically falling out of a womb North of the border. The illegals DO NOT have any talent to offer AMERICANS that millions of unemployed young american citizens do not have. MILLIONS OF OUR BRILLIANT YOUNG CITIZENS ALL COLLEGE GRADUATS CAN NOT FIND JOBS. THEY CAN NOT PROPERLY SUPPORT THEMSELVES OR PAY THEIR STUDENT LOANS. The law breaking parents and their off spring should not be rewarded. That sends the wrong messages. It is equal to being a criminal running from the law for generations. American you are going to have a serious problem very soon with up rising from illegals and terrorism. These young people all speak of loyalties to their motherland.

Its amazing how everyone who lives in states without massive immigration problems seem to know about immigration problems. Maybe when Georgia comes under a constant invasion of illegal immigrants, you can write about it like you know what you’re talking about. Until then, you should probably write about something else.

We all can either live by a set of rules or we can have anarchy – not much of a choice, now is it.

The solution is rather simple. Those here already can have a temporary resident registration card. It would not help with citizenship, we have a process already in place for that.

Without this card or green card or citizenship, work would be impossible. No card or other documentation or you overstay a visa and you would join work gangs fixing our infrastructure.

They could work and pay taxes, but they would not be able to vote.

To me one of the biggest issues is that the illegal’s that come into our country have no interest in becoming Americans, they are interested in our benefits, our resources, but not interested in becoming Americans. Ride through Smyrna, ride through Gwinnett. If you didn’t know where you were you would think you were in Mexico, Korea, China. They are interested in turning their little piece of the world into their home country, and that scares many native born Americans. I can understand them wanting to get out of the cess pool, but why do that then try to convert where they live back into that same cess pool to which they came from?

And how sad is it that out west Americans can’t wear shirts with the “American” flag on it to school because it might offend Latinos?

There is a system setup to become an American, is it easy, no. but its our system, its what our country has put in place and it has worked for over a century. You have a choice follow our rules or stay home and build yourself a better country, just like our founding fathers did.

I’d love to see some tough talking xenophobic politician have the guts to come out and propose that we deport all 11 million or so. I would also expect this proposal to include a full projection of costs (investigation, detaining them, transporting, etc) and also tell us from where the money will come. The let us evaluate it as we do any other available option.

They may not get in state tuition to our colleges. They may not vote. They cannot collect unemployment or social security. Their children are NOT American citizens. BUT do NOT deport them or threaten them anymore! Thye may remain, legally, and apply for citizenship as if they were still in their home country.

Cutting to the quick of this, economy, crime, etc. aside, I think this issue would be rrelatively moot if there were a way to have illegals pay their share of the cost for the services they consume now for free, i.e., educating their children, healthcare, etc.
Keep in mind though, grant citizenship to a bunch of illegals who have never paid a dime into SS, then retire and claim SS beniefits and the death of SS is all that much closer.

Yes, we did grant amnesty to 11 million illegals in the 80’s. But that was when our entitlement budget wasn’t in the trillions. We now have another 15 million illegals who the democrats are trying to make legal so they can get their votes since that is the only way they will win in 2012. America cannot afford 15 million more on the entitlement dole. Our budget is shot, the middle class has become the lower class and we are paying more and more for people who want everything free.

Soon, we will run out of food and fuel and EVERYONE will suffer because we tried to be so “politically conscious”. How about giving life long Americans a chance to live their lives, do their jobs and enjoy their families? We are sick of paying for these people who get more of our income than we do?

The hostility towards illegal immigrants is based on the fact they are breaking the law and our Government has to be pushed to do anything about it. As citizens of this country, we are expected to be law abiding so we get a little angry when 12 million people come here ILLEGALLY and our Government does little or nothing. Those who commit crimes, come here illegally, pop out 10 kids and sign up for all the entitlements they can get there hands on are not welcome. Become part of the US and you’ll do fine. That’s actually a very valid ppint. As part of our book of business, we have a number of cleaning services. Everytime we do an employee enrollment it’s the same story. More than 50% of the employees don’t speak english, so it takes twice as long to complete the paperwork. However, when they get to the W-4 and the G-4, they have no problem completing the form particularly the section that asks how many dependents you are claiming. Average number is usually between 5 and 6.

Yes. They were ignored, and more than a few Romans probably regretted it.

I also believe Congress abdicated its responsibility in giving Bush carte blanc to go to war. I have friends who are staunch Republicans and others who would be called liberals.
I believe Georgia currently is home to an estimated 450,000 to 700,000 illegal immigrants. I do not personally know anyone–of whatever political persuasion–who does not realize this ever expanding population causes severe problems and financial hardship on health care, educational systems and other services.

First of all I am a black American born and raised here.

My in laws came from a foreign country and did it the right way. They did all of the paperwork and came to this country legally. It was a long process but they did it. I am against the law breakers who have slipped into this country overnight and just because they’ve skirted the rules by laying low have simply blended in and now want rights.

Once you have entered our country illegally you have broken OUR laws and you should not be rewarded for doing so.

During their time here, many of these people have drained our resources by using hospitals for free healthcare. Free for them means higher premiums for the rest of us. Also, they have not paid taxes (yes..payroll tax for working..stop with the we buy cigarettes and booze and therefore we pay taxes) but take from the till.

Look we are a country of laws. If you allow illegals (in this case we are talking about Hispanics: Mexicans, Cubans, South Americans) to simply be granted the right to buck the system then what message are we sending to all of those who have emigrated legally? What message do we send to the world that we will bend our laws for criminals? Will we now allow Haitians the right for legal status if they can get here by boat or will we continue to grab them and send them back?

The central government has failed, but I commend states that have passed laws to remove these people from our society. Come here legally and I do no have a problem at all.

Stop with the nonsense and bleeding heart BS. You break the law you must face the music. That is how it is for you, me and god forbid even the illegals!

We can just tell North Korea and Iran to “be nice”, tell the Islamofascists to “quit bombing innocent people”, and tell the Somali pirates to “stop taking hostages” and the world will be a happy place. Unicorns and rainbows everywhere.

Cynthia and Granny do have a point, The kids are here legally. So my suggestion is to let the kids stay and send the parents back. Afterall, the parents did have 18 + years to becaome legal citizens while the kids were in school and chose not too. If the argument is that it wouldn’t be right to seperate the family, then the kids are welcome to join their folks on their journey back to the homeland. If they choose to stay, then they follow the rules like everyone else.

Why is it always a color of your skin problem? I worked in a factory where over half of the people were illegal immigrants and I assumed they were depriving black and white people from jobs. Had the liberal party people like yourself rather your own race sit at home and draw welfare?

What race is filling up the schools right now to a point that teachers are being laid off? The Hispanics and how many are illegal immigrants? This directly affects the education of your on race which I assume you care nothing about. Since you had rather see the over crowding of the schools by non taxpaying illegal immigrants.

Thirdly, why would a government that is 14 trillion dollars in debt and is lead by a president that has a proven track record of the most liberal, socialist thinking, free spending of all time. Not want to clamp down on the rate the illegal immigrants are taxing our way of life. What is wrong about asking people to do something the right way? Does it not bother you as a person when someone steals from your house? If you are for illegal immigration why do you lock your doors at night? What are you afraid off? Might someone sneak in and disturb your way of life, Cynthia? What is the difference in your house and America?

“…despite Obama’s clear record of amping up border security.”

Once again, CT, you espouse your ignorance with gusto. Obama & Co. are suing Arizona for doing the Fed’s job, because the Feds aren’t doing it. Our borders are still like a sieve, with people crossing illegally by the hundreds every week. Napolitano says (straight-faced, mind you) that “the borders are more secure than ever.” She then goes on to tell us of all the deportations conducted by ICE last year, and that “only about 900 deportation orders were suspended or cancelled.” In truth, over 34,000 orders were suspended or cancelled, and about the only improvement in border security has come at the hands of Arizona’s agents at the State’s expense, and against the wishes of this Administration.

The Dream Act is a joke promoted by Democrats. Democrats could have easily passed it when they controlled both houses, and Obama was ready to sign anything put in front of him by Pelosi or Reid. They didn’t do it because they knew that it benefitted very few, and the cost in angry voters would be too great. Once they saw it couldn’t be passed, they re-initiated it, thereby showing the primarily Hispanic community that they were “trying to help them, but that “xenophobic” (your term) GOP stopped it, and if you’ll just continue to support the Democrats, we’ll try it again when there is more chance for success.” The Libs are the oppressors and users of the illegal aliens, not the GOP. And as for your logic of granting immunity to children brought here by their illegal-alien parents, that’s like saying that if my father robbed a bank and gave me the money, not only am I innocent, but I also get to keep the money! Every side has its own story, but in the case of illegal immigration, the GOP and Tea Party are writing fact, while you and your ilk are writing fiction.

regarding the decline statement, she needs to look at feminism (increasing the labor pool by 40% does what?), NAFTA & granting China permanent most favored nation status (both done under Clinton). Has children raising improved? Has single mothers with 4 kids by 4 different fathers moved out of poverty, or just into the local public housing complex? I want Mexicans to migrate legally – we need an Ellis Island structure in San Antonio so they can immediately start to assimilate. Since you are so worried about our Mexican neighbors, let’s adopt thier immigration laws:

• Foreigners with fake papers, or who enter the country under false pretenses, may be imprisoned
• Foreigners who fail to obey the rules will be fined, deported, and/or imprisoned as felons:
• Under Mexican law, illegal immigration is a felony
• The Mexican constitution expressly forbids non-citizens to participate in the country’s political life.
• The Mexican constitution denies fundamental property rights to foreigners.
• The Mexican constitution denies equal employment rights to immigrants, even legal ones, in the public sector.
• The Mexican constitution states that foreigners may be expelled for any reason and without due process

There is NO WAY the American public at this point is going to trust the current Congress and Administration with immigration reform, after Obamacare, massive deficits, quantitative easing, and all the other socialist nonsense of the first 2-1/2 years of Obama, and after conservatives had to force Bush and the Republicans to stand down on their prior efforts.

We were informed that we were not to carry any firearms – military issued or personal. (We were issued side arms when we assisted in the evacuation of New Orleans during Katrina). We were also notified that we were to only assist in medical assistance (food, water, minor medical treatments). If we were to encounter any aggressive behavior, we were to evacuate the immediate area & inform the “authorities”. More of those pesky statistics….

Illegals in this country
23,411,401 This increases daily despite CT’s optimism

Money wired to Mexico since 2001
262, 533,671,000

Cost of social services since 1996
397,456,577,000

Children of illegals since 1996
5,390,856 This also increases daily

Cost of illegals in our school systems in K-12 since 1996
164,689,924,000

Illegals incarcerated
449,763

Cost of incarceration since 2008
24,663,521,806

Are we really sure that illegals provide more benefit to our economy than they cost? And despite CT’s proclamation that our border is secure, they keep coming across every day. All the drones, National Guard and border patrol agents will not stem the flow. Nearly 48% of all illegals live in LA, that’s the LA in California. California has a deficit of nearly 23B at last count. Napalitono still says that immigration is a federal problem but she puts bandaids on cancers by telling the states to butt out. If the SCOTS rules in favor of AZ in this mess, we will have whole new ball game and the chances are, they will. Stay tuned. BTW, nearly 59% of Americans are against passage of the Dream Act. J coner,

Ok, so what about those same kids when they turn 18, 20, 25, 30, and 35? They know they are here illegally, and they still make the decision not to become citizens. And with those actions, they bring into this world another crop of illegal kids that will continue to do as their family has, and that is break the law and never make it right. It is not fair for this cycle to continue and keep American citizens out of colleges, allowing these people to have babies for free, and get other free medical attention while avoiding taxes.

My wife works with a woman that married an illegal, stupid decision. She knew full well what she was getting into, but continues to complain how she has to drive everywhere and has to be careful of what they do together. WELL, her husband drives a car without a license or insurance, his parents run a mechanics shop with a fake ID that they use, and his sister has had three kids in American hospitals and haven’t paid a damn penny. OH, and they have been here since they were 4, and they are now in their younger 30’s. Now please tell me what is right about all of this, and how to you can turn this into a favorable stance on your behalf that it doesn’t affect other American citizens. And it cost my wife and I around $12,000 last year to deliver our baby girl, that we paid out of our pockets, not the taxpayers.

I realize we can’t ship all these people back, but they need to be made to go through the naturalization process just like immigrants have done in the past.

The latest Border Patrol report as stated on CNN last night lists that the southern border is only 44% guarded and that of the 750 mile of fencing, required by law, that only just a little over 325 miles is completed. This is why the state of Arizona is asking for private donations to finish building the fence across their southern border. New Mexico and Texas has none of the new fencing. So Cynthia, this is just another lie from you as usual.

As far as the Dream Act goes, how much more money are you going to let these illegal criminal suck out of this country and Georgia? With 20,000,000 plus unemployed American citizens who can’t find jobs and you want them to educate, feed, and house these criminals is beyond me. Just remember, these children of illegals knew without a doubt from a very early age that they were illegal and made no attempt to become citizens right through their 12 years of FREE education prior to begging for FREE college.

Here’s what I do. I pull up to the crowd of day laborers in my truck, and tell them I have some painting work for them, they pile in, then I drive them to the US Citizenship and Immigration Office, then watch ‘em run like cucarachas!

Have some fun, the directions to the office are below. Viva USA!

From Interstate 285 North:

Take Exit 37.

Turn left off the exit ramp onto Lavista Road.

Get into the right lane.

Turn right onto Parklake Drive at the first traffic light.

From Interstate 285 South:

Take Exit 36A for Northlake Parkway.

Take a right off the exit ramp.

Go to the first traffic light and turn left onto Parklake Drive.

i like the concept of allowing the children who had their parents bring them in to the country be allowed to stay and be granted amnesty.. at the same time.. any child who had parents that gained income from committing felonies should have all those assets that were seized given back to them. after all.. the same logic applies.. unless we are going to discriminate?

blackinamercia…

Please do not try to equate the plight of blacks who came to this country against their will with today’s Mexicans and Hispanics who come here of their free will and who are knowingly breaking the law. (and yes the Irish are the largest illegal group in this country..however the article singles out Hispanics)

These two do not compute.

Also, while it is 100% true that this land was stolen from the Native Americans..(of which I am part Native American as well) the laws that prevented illegal immigration happened well after the slaves were here.

Therefore, your whole post is moot.

Oh and Cynthia, just for the record, Obama did not issue the order to raid Bin Ladens compound in Pakistan. Up until the order was given to attack, Obama’s chief of staff Valerie Jarrett was telling the military NOT to attack. It seems Mr. Waffler could not make a decision on his own, so Valerie Jarrett was telling the CIA and Military to not attack unless they could do it on the ground, not bombing. They came back and said they would do that and good ole anti-American Valerie Jarrett told them NO. THEY DID IT ANYWAY AND SAID THEY WOULD TAKE THE BLAME IF IT FAILED! Obama was not called until the raid was over and told to meet at the situation room at the White House. That’s why he looks so confused (duh?) in that ops room photo. And now he is the hero is this coup? Get real America. The liberal media like Cynthia feeds you exactly what they want you to hear!

Oh, forgot to mention the anchor babies. Since 2002, there have been 4,947,617 born in America. This also increases daily. If we figure that there 307M people in this country at the last census, illegals represent about 7.8% of our population. That is a staggering statistic. Yeah, CT, our border is more secure than it ever has been. And there’s an Easter Bunny and Santa Claus slides down chimneys.

Actually the bill goes back to 2001 and has been introduced several times by both Democrats and Republicans. It was included in George W Bush’s immigration bill by the Bush administration. It has passed the House several times. The problem is 60 votes in the Senate.

Now that Obama has accepted his reponsiblity for SECURING the border, how is he doing. How many people are continuing to cross. Hiring a few analysts or putting up a few miles of fencing is an activity not an outcome. As president he is responsible for OUTCOMES.
The president ducked the question of outcomes. Tucker, as usual, is a hate filled partisan.
Waht I hear from the people near the border is that things are marginally better but that we continue to have a unsecured southern border with large numbers of illegals continuing to cross.
There can be no decision about what to do about illegal residents ( not that amnesty is EVER a good idea) until we no longer have hundreds of thousands of illegals coming in our borders.

While there are countless reasons why people commit crimes one of those crimes is crossing the border illegally. Pride comes from becoming a citizen legally, greed comes from the fact that we want to keep our money in our pockets for our family and not pay for illegals who take from our tax money, and anger comes from the fact that there are some in our society that do not understand that being here illegally is a crime.

Interesting how Cynthia only mentions the illegals that go to college, work a job, contribute to their societies. What about the illegals that kill innocent Americans and commit heinous crimes on legal Americans? How about the See, the borders are NOT secure. If they were secure we would not have thousands of illegals entering America each year. How about the thousands of illegals that drain our healthcare system, pay not income taxes, hurt our education systems. I guess Cynthia isn’t aware of those?

Last point, there is no country in the world that allows illegals to simply cross their borders without some kind of citizenship process. It is what it is, nobody wants to throw some kid out of college but it isn’t that simple. Point blank.

Eric

May 11th, 2011

CT…for the most part I agree with your columns…but this time you got it dead wrong. The vast majority of illegal aliens are NOT college grads. They are blue collar workers who do nothing but take money from legal residents, don’t pay taxes, become a drain on local government resources by running to the ER whenever they need medical care, and then take a decent portion of the money they make and send it back to Mexico to support family there. You further suggested that amnesty should be given to illegal immigrants who have remained in this country for a period of time and have not broken the law. Your suggestion is just down right stupid, because the fact that they are living on US soil in the first place is breaking the law.

I have had this conversation with MANY folks. The general feeling is simple…if you want to come to this country, do it legally or stay out. It’s the same process that our great grandparents went through and it’s the process that grants people legal residency. Do that and there won’t be a college grad terrified that their education will go to waste because they can’t legally work here. Oh and based on what I understand, those college grads are also going to school on the heels of taxpayer funds, many getting grants, scholorships and financial aid that legally they should never be entitiled to, that money should be going to legal residence.

I will never understand anyone who thinks that we should just throw open our borders and let people walk in the gate…and then welcome them with a big hug. The immigration process allows us to size up immigrants and make sure they will be a citizen that adds to this community we call the US. I’m sick and tired of illegals saying they are not criminals because in fact each and every one of them are…and I don’t give a rats behind what they bring to the table. If you start out your new life in this country by breaking a law, then your butt should be deported. I also think that once you are deported, you should be given a five year penalty from trying to enter this country legally.

Don’t get me wrong…I get it. These people want a better life. But the bottom line is that a vast majority of companies screen legal US residents background prior to offering them work (typically turning down anyone with a criminal background)…why should the standard be any different for an illegal immigrant?

For once, I have to almost agree with Tucker!  However, she fails to address the true extent of the problem with our immigration laws. In addition to the thousands of Mexican nationals (or their children born years later) who illegally enter the U.S. There are thousands more who entered legally according to our immigration laws, but through inconsistencies in those laws found themselves in an illegal status. The argument against changing our immigration laws is that we already have the necessary laws; all we need to do is to enforce them. That rationale is fine, unless the immigration laws have glaring inconsistencies like those described, above.

If Mexicans are so good for America why is Mexico such a dump ? Mexico should be utilizing their #1 asset IN MEXICO, not in America. What’s their #1 asset ? Their hard working citizens. But what Mexico choses to do is send them to the USA where they damage our country in countless ways while sending large sums of money back to Mexico. This way Mexico doesn’t have to provide social services for these citizens while at the same time benefitting from their labors. The provider of the social services is the American taxpayer.

Mexicans need to be working towards a better Mexico. If we eliminated the Mexican illegal alien problem then the numbers of illegal aliens from other countries would be so small that we could easily deal with them through deportation.

Why are there not as many Americans of Color working in the Construction industry today? Why does our President diss so many of our own citizens saying that we want moats, and alligators on the border. If the President would get serious about the border, and do his Constitutional duty of securing it, and offer leadership that would protect all Americans, immigration reform could & would soon follow. Most Americans know that the President has only empty words and that he speaks with a forked tongue to enhance his selfish political ends.

Cynthia, you’re right that we need some type of immigration reform. But if you think the border is even close to being “secure”, you’re about as smart as biscuit dough.
I realize that some form of amnesty needs to happen…but we’ve tried that once, and all it did was encourage many more people to sneak here illegally. And before I support trying it again, the government is going to HAVE to prove that it is serious about controlling the border. Stop immigration completely (or as completely as possible) for two years, and then I’ll support an amnesty program for the thirteen million people here illegally. (And a “virtual fence” is a damn joke.) And we also need to make it a FELONY to knowingly hire an illegal. Show a few employers being given a “perp walk” in chains, and it’ll go a long way toward stopping illegal immigration. (But for some reason, both the Democrats and Republicans bitterly oppose that…)

If these bigots and hypcorites (some fall into both categories) were living outside the US in abject poverty, they and their families would enter this country by any means possible.
Their anscestors, white Eurpoeans, were the original undocumented aliens.

Obama has NEVER stopped campaigning . . he came to the presidency campaigning and has never stopped! And because he has been in continuous campaign mode, he has been and continues to be divisive. He has done nothing but run the Republicans/conservatives down EVERY opportunity he gets (as though he is campaigning); some one needs to tell the man he WON the presidency so he can start being the President of the UNITED States and it isn’t necessary to continue campaigning! The border is not secure and people like Cynthia Tucker and President Obama can spin it anyway they want and the unintelligent people who are gaga over them will believe anything they say . . . I guess all the drugs and guns that pass over the border as well as the continuing flow of illegals is just our imagination!

The border is secure? Where the heck have you been?

You’re right, I am prejudiced. I am prejudiced against lawbreakers who get away with it. Not only get away with breaking the law, but manage to reap a handful of “government” handouts while they’re at it and “force” us all to kowtow to their agenda, their unwillingness to learn the language of their adopted (so to speak) country, their unwillingness to assimilate AT ALL except to get on the government dole, which for some reason they EXPECT (?????????). I remind you, Ms Tucker, again and again and as often as necessary, that the government handouts come from MY pocket. The government is not some nebulous fairy godmother sitting in an ivory tower cranking out money and tossing it around willy nilly. Well, maybe they are. But I am the one paying for it. I thought you were, too. But perhaps not.

You and all other ILLEGAL immigrant, lawbreaking aliens sympathizers make me sick. At what point do we hold lawbreakers accountable and at what point do we let them go? Idiots like you just cannot get through your thick skull the concept of breaking the law. That one FACT alone is bad enough. But then to PAY them for it?????? You are loony, lady.

I don’t know for a fact, but I feel confident that they didn’t go the emergency rooms taking advantage of taxpayers, and mooching off of every government handout like the illegals do today! The didn’t walk across a border . . . most sailed across the ocean with little or nothing. They didn’t bring drugs and guns, etc. If you don’t want the country to be like it was back then . . . stop referring to the early immigrants who settled a country when there was little here to begin with. Surely you learned early on that you cannot compare an apple with an orange just because they are both a fruit! Two different situations . . two different eras!

The nation’s immigration policy is irrational — warped by nativism, finger-pointing and political cowardice.

It’s based on deep-seated prejudices stoked by a faltering economy and an increasingly diverse population.

While Congress panders to the xenophobic impulses of frightened voters, the country is squandering some of its best and brightest.
++++++
I often find when people call me names I change my mind.

It is interesting to hear all these arguments about how immigrants help our economy. The unemployment rate for Hispanics Americans is 2.8%(11.8% total) higher than the unemployment rate for the US (9%). Why would encourage a group of people citizens which are more likely to be uneployed than the average citizen. The educational argument is interesting because in general Hispanics do not go to college at the same rates as non-Hispanics. The average is 29.5% while Hispanics are at 13.2%. These is even worse when you considered the Puerto Rican and Cuban educational rate of 16.5% and 27.9.

What is interesting is Mexico’s Total fertility rate is 2.29 which means that if we are relying on immigrants from Mexico we could be in trouble. Mexico’s population growth ranks 105th.

Also, Mexico’s economy has moved from 25% GDP per Capita of the United States to 29% in just 10 years. Eventually, the attraction of Mexican immigrants to the United States will be limited.

The United States ranks 23rd in the world in net migrants rate. It seems ironic to hear words like prejudice and xenophobic when looking at such statistics. Also, many of the countries ahead of us are small countries like Liechtenstein, Singapore, Aruba, Sint Maarten, Cayman Islands. Among relative populated countries only Italy, Canada and Australia rank ahead of us. If you multiply our migration rate times the number of people we have it even seems more impressive.

The DREAM Act is a hybrid of a good idea and a terrible one. While I am an open borders sort, I fully agree with moving to the front of the line those who have served our noble military for four years. On the other hand, I cannot fathom any reason to honor those who laid about a frat house and majored in history. The former represents a true commitment to the prospective new homeland, the latter is merely living off the fat of the land – we already have too many of the latter.

“Many native-born Americans wrongly believe that illegal workers have sapped our strength, reversed our economic fortunes and set us on a course toward decline.”

Actually simple logic will prove that illegal immigrants who are taking American jobs have indeed sapped our strength and reversed our economic fortunes. There are 22 million Americans who are currently unemployed, despite this fact more than 5% of American jobs are currently occupied by illegal immigrants. Ask yourself this, why would an employer break the law to hire an illegal immigrant when there are so many Americans currently out of work? The answer is really quite simple: because illegal immigrants will work for much less money than an American would work for, not to mention that illegals aren’t going to apply for workman’s comp if they are hurt on the job and they sure aren’t going to collect unemployment insurance if they get laid off. Illegal immigrants are hurting working class Americans everyday by taking our jobs and driving down our wages!

Cynthia, I think it would be good if you told the truth about the “Dream Act”. The bill that was defeated, and which Obama is trying to resurrect is nothing more than blanket amnesty for all illegals.

I’m not sure if you read that bill, but I did.! It had so many loopholes in it that any illegal would qualify.

The way it was written, a person could have crossed the border today, and tomorrow qualify for amnesty tomorrow.

Amnest for those brought here as chlidren makes some sense, but the “DREAM ACT” was a backdoor amnesty plan all illegals.

Furthermore, to claim that the border is secure is totally asinine!

On March 17, 2011, Democrat Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada speculated for reasons known to himself, that the TEA PARTY would be short lived and disappear? Where he came up with this hypothesis makes the Tea Party branch members laugh, as the Tea Party is continually growing and now in the tens of millions. As of today there are thousands of these cells, as the spirited Founder and chair Rev. William Temple of Freedom Jamboree and the Tea Party National Straw Poll Convention explained at the news conference. Temple reprimanded the majority Speaker of the House Republicans, John Boehner. He had not sufficiently pushed for a cut in the massive federal deficit of 14.5 Trillion dollars and climbing each day. One of the main issues that must be exposed is the distraction of the illegal immigration invasion. This is currently associated with jobs, the economy, gasoline prices and banks that not lending to home buyers.

In El Paso, Texas, yesterday president Obama made a speech relating border security and the need to allow more immigrants into America? My assumption we should ask the 22 million Americans who are unable to find a full time jobs, specifically the poorer workers who don’t have a higher education? So just what we necessitate is more immigrant labor so says the President? According to the president’s speech and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano the border is more secure now, than it’s ever been? Yet according to the General Accounting office “illegal aliens can only be stopped along 129 miles of our nearly 2,000 mile long border with Mexico and along only 2 miles of our nearly 4,000 mile long border with Canada!” Local Border Sheriffs Larry Dever of Cochise County and Paul Babeu of Pinal County and anonymous Border agents have a different attitude to Obama’s statement.

The border region is more dangerous than ever before? That the border is so dangerous, that there are signs indicating these certain areas are off limits to the American public. Rep. Michele Bachmann, Senator Rand Paul, key leadership of the Tea Party opposes measures of easing immigration restrictions. Over the previous 3 decades, our borders have become less effective, with easy access in some locations to illegal immigrants, increasing the flood while the enforcement of our existing immigration laws have fallen on deaf ears. Rep. Bachmann stated, ” I support legislation that first addresses our most urgent problem: securing America’s borders. We must start by using new technologies such as electronic surveillance where most effective. We need to enforce current laws by holding responsible those who willfully violate our nation’s immigration laws.”

Bachmann also co-sponsored declaring English as the official language of the US. Activists have said remove incentives and rewards to illegal aliens such as licenses, welfare, and other taxpayer services. Senator Rand Paul in my personal letter said, “I also believe that subsidizing something creates more of it, and I do not think the American taxpayers should be forced to pay for welfare, medical care and other expenses for illegal immigrants. I will work to stop those taxpayer funded benefits.” America is a land of charitable and compassionate people, but our generosity and principles are being strained and being abused by those who are willing to break the law, taking our jobs and our tax dollars. Why is it not a felony to enter the United States without permission? Today these individuals are protesting and demanding even more from the taxpayers, in the form of education, health care, services that is provided to citizens and legal residents.

The Tea Party America’s has declared that the illegal alien population will begin to shrink instead of growing, if we support candidates that will reflect the will of the vast majority of American citizens. The revolt within the Republican Party is the TEA PARTY who is resentful of both political parties having agendas to support their individual empowerment. This accounts for thousands of extra votes for Democrats and for the GOP exploitable cheap labor. Neither is the belief of the TEA PARTY that wants stronger enforcement at the North and Southern border, which includes a National Guard presence, with the ability to kill drug smuggling, weapons and illegal immigrants, with force if necessary? Furthermore, the mandated use of the new version of E-Verify, that carries tough penalties for businesses that hire workers, without legal status. In addition, the Permanent operation of “Secure Communities” in local police locations, to fingerprint and check their criminal charges through ICE data bases.

The Tea Party will not tolerate any further Amnesties, after the Great 1986 Amnesty laws were ignored by both parties. Internally in America, 20 million illegal aliens still find work in notorious businesses of every classification. The 2006 Secure (Double) Fence Act was intentionally unfunded just months after being enacted. The Tea Party apposes Sanctuary Cities, Chain Migration and the court mishandled instant citizen for babies intentionally conceived to gain entrance for illegal parents into America. The Dream Act, which in turn will add to the Chain Migration and Immigration Reform, a misleading name for Amnesty. All this lenient rewards, just encourages further exploitation and a unfettered magnet to financial benefits and public services once crossing the border or overstaying expired visas. The American people have woken up and each day are finding that the Tea Party (perhaps third party) are more like their middle class interpretation that they are striving for? The Tea Party stands somewhere between Democrats and Republicans in definition, as moderate Conservatism have received amazing results in such a short time. So Join the TEA PARTY as the revolution has just begun, to fade out the radical people who run this country. Skilled immigrants with high profession job expertise will receive the hospitality of all Americans, including the Tea party members. But we must stop the unfettered incursion of people, who will need welfare assistance and will displace impoverished Americans who still have a manual jobs.

Speaking only for myself, my “hostility” is based on the fact that they’re flouting our laws against illegal immigration, on an enormous scale. It’s similar to the “hostility” I feel for people who cheat on their taxes, drive drunk, and abuse animals. They are breaking the law. If I snuck into Mexico (not that I’d want to) I’d expect the natives to feel “hostility” toward me as well.

I’m wondering if you would accuse Mexicans of the same “nativist” impulses if I moved to Mexico illegally and worked, went to school and did the same stuff that illegal mexicans do here (or people coming from other countries for that matter). I would imagine you would not accuse the Mexicans of being unfair or nativist if they expected me to come and live in Mexico legally. I could be wrong but it seem you practice a form of rascism. It is the “subtle racism of lowered expectations”. You expect more from whites. You (I suspect) would expect whites to enter legaly or (if they don’t) suffer the rightful consequences if they went to any other nation and stayed illegaly. I could be wrong.
