Huckabee is as wrong as the birthers

Oh, goodness gracious. You know those zombie movies where the illness keeps spreading and pretty soon even some of the main characters have the plague?
Well, that’s pretty much what’s happening in the Republican Party, where birther/zombie madness is spreading. My colleague Jay Bookman has an excellent post about the Georgia House, which seems close to passing legislation that would demand Obama’s birth certificate if he is to appear on the ballot in 2012.

And now Mike Huckabee has caught an attendant form of the plague. He says, correctly, that Obama was born in the United States, but he believes, incorrectly, that Obama grew up in Kenya and, therefore, is not, you know, like us.

Via First Read, here’s a partial transcript of an interview Huckabee gave to a rightwing radio talk show host:

MALZBERG: Don’t you think it’s fair also to ask him – I know your stance on this – how come we don’t have a health record? We don’t have a college record? We don’t have a birth certif- why Mr. Obama did you spend millions of dollars in courts all over this country to defend against having to present a birth certificate. It’s one thing to say, “You’ve seen it, goodbye. But why go to court and send lawyers to defend against having to show it?” Don’t you think we deserve to know more about this man?

HUCKABEE: I would love to know more – what I know is troubling enough. And one thing that I do know is his having grown up in Kenya – his view of the Brits, for example, very different from the average American. When he gave the bust back to [of Winston Churchill] — of Winston Churchill, yeah. A great insult to the British, but if you think about it – his perspective growing up in Kenya with a Kenyan father and granfather, their view of the Mau Mau Revolution is very different from ours, because he probably grew up hearing that the British were a bunch of imperialists who persecuted his grandfather.

MALZBERG: He despises the West, he despises the Brits, and I think he could take it all out on Israel, and that’s why he despises Israel. He’s not too thrilled with our history either… Would you say to him or at least ask him in a debate: Why did you go to court and spend millions of dollars on lawyers to prevent from having to show your birth certificate? If you have one, and it’s there, why not show it?

HUCKABEE: The only reason I’m not as confident that there’s something about the birth certificate, Steve, is because I know the Clintons well, and believe me they had lots of investigators out on him, and I’m convinced if there was anything they could have found on that they would have found it and I promised they would have used it.

Interesting that Huckabee manages to get in a few digs at the Clintons, too.

For the record, Obama grew up in Hawaii. That’s the 50th state in the union. You know, fifty stars in the flag? He spent part of his childhood in Indonesia, but none of it in Kenya. It’s all right there in his book, “Dreams from my Father.” Nothing hidden from view.

Ok, let’s stop the half truths

From the UK Telegraph

A British Embassy spokesman said: “The bust of Sir Winston Churchill by Sir Jacob Epstein was uniquely lent to a foreign head of state, President George W Bush, from the Government Art Collection in the wake of 9/11 as a signal of the strong transatlantic relationship.

“It was lent for the first term of office of President Bush. When the President was elected for his second and final term, the loan was extended until January 2009.

“The new President has decided not to continue this loan and the bust has now been returned. It is on display at the Ambassador’s Residence.”

and of course the bust of Winston Churchill was replaced with a bust of President Abraham Lincoln….you gotta problem with that?

Good afternoon all. If the substance of Gov. Huckabee’s commentary is that “Obama is not like the rest of us,” I think that patently true. Our leftist friends fawn over the One We Have Awaited, their more extreme opposites affirm that he is the spawn of Satan bringing about the end of the Mayan calendar and the end of the line of Popes. I believe even Richard Nixon did not trigger such polarized reactions.

“That’s the 50th state in the union.” – Yes we know. But does Obama know? If he does, then what is the 57th state he talked visiting?

“Well, that’s pretty much what’s happening in the Republican Party, where birther/zombie madness is spreading.” – Sucks. They’re just as crazy as those on the left that think healthcare is a ‘right’. Both sides have their loonies it seems….

unless you have proof that he actually used that old “what’s her name’s” line of “thanks, but no thanks” (now there’s a story), I didn’t leave that out – conveniently the link does say “The new President has decided not to continue this loan and the bust has now been returned.”

An inane comment from Huckabee.

Views of the American Civil War often differ based on where you went to school
Views of the American Revolution differed based on which side of the ocean you were on
The Brits were not imperialist?

He’s different from the “average American” so fear!

Personally, I like Huckabee – he would be just as competent VP as Biden. There is anecdotal evidence that Obama is divorced from the typical American narrative. While I support the Bush Affect of democratication in the middle east, the way Obama’s administration treated Mubarak as opposed to Libya & Iran the year previous is odd. I also highly doubt that the elected governments in the Middle East will be pro-American or Israel. could be an interesting next decade.

Says his spokesman Hogan Gidley to POLITICO:

“Governor Huckabee simply misspoke when he alluded to President Obama growing up in ‘Kenya.’ The Governor meant to say the President grew up in Indonesia.”

“When the Governor mentioned he wanted to know more about the President, he wasn’t talking about the President’s place of birth – the Governor believes the President was born in Hawaii. The Governor would however like to know more about where President Obama’s liberal policies come from and what else the President plans to do to this country – as do most Americans.”

OMG! Stop the presses! Huckabee incorrectly stated where Obama grew up. Wow. Now, that’s some news.

Really CT? Is this all you have? I know you’re trying to connect Huckabee to the birthers, but this is by no means a connection. You’re a real piece of work.

Furthermore, everything else that Huckabee said about Obama was true. So what if Obama didn’t grow up in Kenya? He did spend part of his childhood in Indonesia, and that certainly changed his views on America. Next, I hate to tell you, but having lived in Hawaii, I can state with some accuracy that the Hawaians are not your typical Americans, and they have some rather non-traditional Amercian views as well.

Finally, although many people (rightly) criticize the “birthers” (who were actually started by the Clintons) about their fanaticism in seeking to find Obama’s birth certificate, it does raise an interesting question about why Obama spent so much time trying to avoid producing one. He could have put a lot of this to bed if he simply would have produced one immediately.

Right,In a passage on pages 26-27, Obama says that when he was in high school he found, folded away, his birth certificate and old vaccination forms.

So, he had the BC in his possession at one time. Cudda lost track of it while serving with the CIA in Pak or Afghan during the time he was (supposedly) a student at Columbia.

This president is different than any other in our history. He is half black, grew up in a Muslim country, lived a fairly secretive life in his college days, traveled to Muslim countries that would not let Americans through their borders in his teenage years, attended some very expensive schools both in Hawaii and afterward while living with his grandmother who had little means to afford such an expense. He attended Punahou school in Hawaii, where my son attended with a yearly tuition even then, at about 6K/yr. He then went to Occidental College from 1979-1981 where the tuition is 25K/yr. This was followed by two year stint at Columbia where the tuition is pegged in 2012 at 63K/yr with each college hr costing $1,310/college hour. This was followed, five years later, by Harvard Law School at 45K/yr after working as a community organizer before attending. And he lived with a single grandmother in Hawaii. Where did all of this tuition money come from? Who paid the bills? If you say that it’s none of our business, you are dead wrong. We need to know every single thing about someone who has chosen to lead this nation. And if he is unwilling or refuses to divulge information which might tend to establish his credibility, he need not run. This is not someone your are investigating to mow your grass……. this is the president of the United States of America and if you are so lax in trying to determine his proper credentials, you must not care much about this country.

Since the law states that you must be a naturalized citizen to be president, why wouldn;t proving that your are one be a prerequisite to registering as a candidate? I do not know if Obama was born as such, but wouldn’t it be a disgrace to have someone load us up with the debt that he has incurred who should never have been in office in the first place? This question should be answered and it should be as transparent as glass.
