‘Don’t ask’ consigned to history’s dust bin

Today, in an unusual Saturday session, the U.S. Senate abolished legally-sanctioned discrimination by the United States Armed Forces. Since the House has also voted to end it, the foolish “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy is assigned to the dustbin of history, along with the racially segregated Armed Forces, the belief that black men would be cowardly and unfit soldiers and the insistence that women could not fly combat aircraft.
The overwhelming vote, 65-31, came despite the statements of Marine Commandant James Amos, who insisted that a non-discriminatory Marine Corps will mean more dead U.S. Marines on the battlefield. That’s sheer and utter nonsense, more a testiment to his prejudices than to any evidence that gay Marines do not serve with courage and honor.
One of the more interesting and intellectually honest arguments that separates conservatives and liberals is over whether love of country must be unconditional. Many conservatives tend to argue that those of us who are constantly agitating to change the nation — to improve its policies, to perfect its justice, to broaden its opportunity — aren’t real patriots.
I could not disagree more. I love my country so much that I’ll do what I can to ensure that it lives up to its ideals. Today, the U.S. Senate brought it one step closer to those ideals.

KUGF: “Regression analyses determined that recent meth users were more likely than men who had never used meth to be sexually active with a female partner, have multiple female partners, have a casual or anonymous female partner…”

Exactly what I would expect. Your point is?

Aquagirl: Surely you jest.

This is the best you guys have?

conservative christians and fundamentalist muslims share the same ideology. Both groups are pro-torture, homophobic, and want to live in a theocracy.

No TGT, I’m not jesting—-is the best you have made-up “facts?” Oh, wait—again I forget, you probably think only white folk have legitimate marriages. Everybody else is just jumping the broom, those cute little dark folk!

I’ve worked in HIV testing and prevention. I collected a paycheck working with those women who are non-existent to you. Compared to them you are a sorry excuse for a human being, more obsessed with gay-bashing than actual people who suffer.

Think about that one for a while.

Again with “homophobe.” “Homophobe,” and its variations, is the dumbest and most misused word in the english language.

The word was coined by psychologist and gay activist George Weinberg in his 1972 book Society and the Healthy Homosexual. The book was published one year prior to the American Psychiatric Association, with a vote of 5,834 to 3,810, removing homosexuality from its list of mental disorders in its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual. The word became an important tool for homosexual activists and their allies. Weinberg gave them a “medical” phobia with which to attack their opponents.

Weinberg defined the word as “the dread of being in close quarters with homosexuals,” adding “It was a fear of homosexuals which seemed to be associated with a fear of contagion, a fear of reducing the things one fought for—home and family. It was a religious fear and it had led to great brutality as fear always does.”

Merriam-Webster defines it as “irrational fear of, aversion to, or discrimination against homosexuality or homosexuals.” First of all, the word is that it makes no sense etymologically. “Homo,” from the Greek, means “the same” and “phobia,” from the Greek, means “fear.” So literally, homophobia means fear of the same.

However, the biggest problem with the term does not stem from its etymological shortcomings. The English language, like most languages, is in constant flux and is full of silly words. The biggest problem with homophobia and its variations is that they have become “snarl” words—words that, when used, are intended to induce a negative response. Such words commonly appeal to people’s emotions rather than their reasoning. The vast majority of the time, this is exactly why the word is used.

You just figuring this out.

Republican wordsmith and spinmeister extraordinaire Frank Luntz has been doing this kind of linguistic work for decades.

Aquagirl: My data is well referenced and you accuse me of “made-up facts?!” What I think about “legitimate marriage” is one man for one woman for life (regardless of “race”).

Since you work in HIV testing/prevention, you above most others, should know better about what leads to HIV infection. I can almost guarantee you that the vast majority of those you deal with are involved in homosexuality, prostitution, promiscuous extra-marital sex, or drug use.

As far as me being a “sorry excuse for a human being,” who are you to judge? The very thing you libs blast Conservative Christians about when it comes to homosexuality (etc.), and you then do the same?!!!

Because that’s what your wingnut websites say? Because otherwise you couldn’t just judge and ignore them? Sorry, charlie, I think I spent a bit more time with them than you. And I know that’s not the case.

And you’re darn right I’m judging you, anyone who will retreat into complete denial to write off other human beings is self-centered and just plain nasty.

I’m not writing off anyone. However, I do believe in telling people the truth. Any sexual activity that is not between a man and a woman who are married is wrong (sinful), and will (eventually) have bad consequences. However, there is hope for all of us, no matter our past, and that is the real message of this wonderful season!

Loved the “constantly agitating to change the nation” – gee, why would that ever get tiresome to those who would like an occasional nod to what America does right. When did constantly bitching become so admirable.?

Thanks to TGT for the info regarding the word homophobia. It is a perjorative and slur against anyone who doesn’t celebrate homosexuality 24/7. Love the tolerance of the left – it’s unrecognizable from intolerance.

Isn’t funny how most self-righteous, so-called christians take such delight in ’schooling’ everyone on the sins of the homosexuals but are SILENT on the subject of fornication? Fornication and it’s consequences (i.e. shackin up, out-of-wedlock children, disease, eroded social norms, etc) has done way more to degrade our so-called moral fabric than any other behavior I can think of right now. You bigoted, prejudging hipocrits ought to remember you live in a glass house the next time you undress. Please use the basement!!!
