‘Don’t ask’ consigned to history’s dust bin

Today, in an unusual Saturday session, the U.S. Senate abolished legally-sanctioned discrimination by the United States Armed Forces. Since the House has also voted to end it, the foolish “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy is assigned to the dustbin of history, along with the racially segregated Armed Forces, the belief that black men would be cowardly and unfit soldiers and the insistence that women could not fly combat aircraft.
The overwhelming vote, 65-31, came despite the statements of Marine Commandant James Amos, who insisted that a non-discriminatory Marine Corps will mean more dead U.S. Marines on the battlefield. That’s sheer and utter nonsense, more a testiment to his prejudices than to any evidence that gay Marines do not serve with courage and honor.
One of the more interesting and intellectually honest arguments that separates conservatives and liberals is over whether love of country must be unconditional. Many conservatives tend to argue that those of us who are constantly agitating to change the nation — to improve its policies, to perfect its justice, to broaden its opportunity — aren’t real patriots.
I could not disagree more. I love my country so much that I’ll do what I can to ensure that it lives up to its ideals. Today, the U.S. Senate brought it one step closer to those ideals.

“This Gay Agenda will lead us down a road of destruction just like what happen in the Bible.”

Agreed. This gay agenda is everywhere. They have infiltrated many areas of society that we don’t even realize. The gay agenda is everywhere.

Dds you know the gays infiltrated pro football? Yep, they did. Bet you didn’t expect that. Proof? Just turn on your HD television set. Somehow they got the football players to wear those male ballet pant like uniform. Its like the player is wearing a pair of chaps or something. So much so you get Tom Brady’s rear end up close and personal every time the Patriots wear white. Same with Matt Ryan.

Yep, Sunday football is being used as a gay recruiting tool. Falcons vs Patriots Superbowl, Brady vs Ryan. A gay recruiters dream.

The only good thing is that the DoD already has a policy defining marriage as a bond between man and women.

Now if we could just recruit gay illegal aliens then I’d really feel safe..

This should never, ever, ever have been an established law in the first place. It does not remove the stain of the Congress for having enacted this law, they get no bonuses for repealing it. 17 years of bigotry and hatred. Who suffered more, them or those who were affected by the law? It was stupid and homophobic! I am so pissed at our government for even creating that law. The courts should have pulled this issue out from under the feet of Congress long ago and removed the ban by force! Then research studies were done to find out if would be okay to repeal the ban. Research studies over 17 years. You do not put discriminatory policy into law, and then repeal it, like you just became the great providers of American justice.

This country needs to evolve and grow up! Leave the GLBT community alone and give us all equal treatment and benefits – without question or discussion. It just happens! Period. No debate, no policies, no votes, no congressional committees, it is just recognized as fact that the GLBT community is fully equal. Thats it, end of story! Now those who serve have to wait for the repeal to be “certified”. Why? People who serve should be able to simply come out and be accepted with no issues, no waiting, and no penalty. GLBT people should not ever be seen as second class citizens, who have to wait for the great blessings of Congress and the Pentagon and for them to get out of our way so we can exercise our rights – that we already possess – just for being human!

Sure, Cynthia, let’s all believe you and your “politically correct” opinions over the opinions of a Commandant who’s got his boots on the ground and is actually in the Marines.

Let’s face it – gay Marines with less testosterone in their system will NOT be the fighters that heterosexual Marines are, and that’s a fact. And that makes our forces weaker.

I don’t see how the repeal of DADT can allow gay’s to serve openly without also repealing Article 125 in the UCMJ and that requires an act of Congress.

Believe on Him and be saved,be reconciled to the Father.!He is righteous and just, and holy!!!We are not!!

When I was in the Navy a number of gay men were found out and discharged. This took some time and caused a great deal of disruption amoung the straight men. This was in peacetime. So, when a majority of lawmakers who have never set foot in the service repeal DADT in wartime, it shows just how little they value servicemen’s lives and how much they want the majority vote.

One of the reasons we won the Revolution was that a Prussian officer named Baron von Steuben drilled the troops at Valley Forge and taught them to fight like real soldiers. Von Steuben was gayer than Christmas.

Important to winning WW2 was Alan Turing’s invention of The Bomb, the device that cracked the German Enigma code. Turing was gay, and British law of the time forced him to be chemically castrated, leading to his suicide.

Just two examples of the wartime service of gays to democracy.

We’ve gone from the days when it was death to let anybody know you were gay to DADT to gays openly serving in the military. There is progress after all.

The reality of this, and many other issues of basic human rights, is that none of you peoples religious beliefs have anything to do with other American’s civil rights. It really is that simple. Nothing you think, believe, pray to, or worship has anything at all to do with the rights and liberties of your neighbors. Bigotry and ignorance will never be justified. America is correcting a 17 year wrong. Your personal convictions have nothing to do with it. Somewhere along the line of history, America will actually realize the principals upon which it was founded. For everyone. We just took one more step in that direction.

But what about the pedosexuals and the beastosexuals? We know their time is coming

No law ever stopped a “beastosexual” but still waiting to hear a beast consent to marriage.

“Pedosexuals” — another hollow fear mongering point. Although the age of consent has changed over the years and may fluctuate, the law applies equally to all people. Absolutely nothing about homosexual equality creates a “slippery slope” or opens the door to this.

shellie, there are few true “christian haters”. Just stop trying to ram your beliefs and myths down everyone elses throat as law. you have the right to your beliefs, you dont have the right to force others to abide by them.

It appears, from the critics here, that anyone who has not been in the military, ESPECIALLY Ms. Tucker, is not allowed to discuss the military. Almost every day someone will critize fer for “not knowing anything about the subject because she’s not white, military, corporate, political, etc….” And God forbid if she should ever mention a black person! RACIST!!!

I recommend a new policy. Only those who can VERIFY they have experience in a field, can talk about that field. For instance, unless you are a violent black teenager, you are not allowed to talk about black teenaged crime. Unless you are an unwed mother, you are not allowed to talk about unwed pregnancy rates. Unless you are gay, you are not allowed to talk about anything gay and unless you are straight, you are not allowed to talk about anything straight.

Sound like something we can live with?

I thought not!

BTW Isaiah…I’m still waiting for the chapter and verse where Jesus condems homosexuality.

Officially, the US military was integrated in 1948. When I was an enlisted man in the Air Force in the 1960s, and a Department of Army civilian employee in the 1980s, I observed a lot of racism and voluntary self-segregation. I expect the same thing is going to happen with the gays.

The reality is that homosexuals have been part of our military forces for years, they just had to keep their sexuality a secret. Suddenly now with that “secret” being out and integrity being again foremost, our military forces are “weaker”…..absurd.

Ralph,
I was in the military in the late 70’s and also saw the racism and self-segregation. The blacks and the whites had to live with it and they did. Gays will have to live with it too and they will. At least Congress made a giant step forward in removing another form of discrimination against an entire group of Americans citizens.

I look back and wonder how we ever discriminated against blacks and told them they couldn’t serve in the military or had to have black only units. Maybe 50 years from now our children will wonder how we waited so long to let gays openly serve their country.
