‘Don’t ask’ consigned to history’s dust bin

Today, in an unusual Saturday session, the U.S. Senate abolished legally-sanctioned discrimination by the United States Armed Forces. Since the House has also voted to end it, the foolish “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy is assigned to the dustbin of history, along with the racially segregated Armed Forces, the belief that black men would be cowardly and unfit soldiers and the insistence that women could not fly combat aircraft.
The overwhelming vote, 65-31, came despite the statements of Marine Commandant James Amos, who insisted that a non-discriminatory Marine Corps will mean more dead U.S. Marines on the battlefield. That’s sheer and utter nonsense, more a testiment to his prejudices than to any evidence that gay Marines do not serve with courage and honor.
One of the more interesting and intellectually honest arguments that separates conservatives and liberals is over whether love of country must be unconditional. Many conservatives tend to argue that those of us who are constantly agitating to change the nation — to improve its policies, to perfect its justice, to broaden its opportunity — aren’t real patriots.
I could not disagree more. I love my country so much that I’ll do what I can to ensure that it lives up to its ideals. Today, the U.S. Senate brought it one step closer to those ideals.

@schrutebeets – so what you are saying is if a person displays a picture of their same-sex life partner, that’s somehow making his/her service about him/her? I don’t see a difference between that and a person displaying a picture of his/her opposite-sex life partner… I sure hope we as a society get over our fear of gay people. Good grief.

Good for our national legislators. DADT was legitimizing deceit. Our soldiers, sailors, marines, and air force service members are better than that and worthy of our trust and each other’s trust.

Integration of the armed forces worked when we finally had a President who had the courage to stand on priciple rather than politics. Women in the military are proving themselves now; the real problems are with the men who can’t handle it, not the women. Freeing gays to serve openly will work, too.

Oh, there will be stories of those who quit over this. There will be tensions as a new mode of behavior is required of everyone in the military – what will happen to all the jokes about gays? Bigger question for me will be with spousal benefits for married gay service members: housing and health care come to mind. Maybe this “legitimization” will help break down other societal barriers to acceptance of gays in civilian life in general.

Good for the U.S.A. We can live up to our ideals, even when we have to overcome centuries of dogmatic thinking that just is plain wrong.

WASHINGTON — A senior aide to David Petraeus, commander of NATO forces in Afghanistan, is out with a strong statement in support of repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (DADT), saying that service members who can’t adjust to the change should think about leaving the military.

“If there are people who cannot deal with the change, then they’re going to have to do what’s best for their troops and best for the organization and best for the military service and exit the military service, so that we can move forward — if that’s the way that we have to go,” said Command Sergeant Major Marvin Hill

More social engineering from folks you would not hire to run a lemonade stand, much less prosecute a war. Recruiting will suffer greatly over time (I will not allow my children to enlist, as will most parents), and then we will get to the liberals’ real purpose – a draft that will be utilized for the mother of all social engineering efforts (outside of our public schools). Just another reason (among many these days) to short Treasuries.

Gee Vast Right Wing Conspiracy. We don’t WANT your spineless children to enlist. If they have neither the mental capacity nor the backbone to enlist if THEY want to we don’t need them. They can’t enlist until they are old enough to make their own decisions. So at what age WILL you “let” your children make decisions for themselves? 60? 65?

I don’t know why the conservatives here are so committed to a world where discrimination, fear, and prejudice are acceptable and freedom and justice take a back seat to bigotry in our largest national institutions. Even worse are the clowns who claim there is no bigotry as they demand more of it. Pathetic. The stereotyping of gay people reveals the bigotry and small mindedness of our worst Americans, and the repeal of DADT shows the triumph of a great nation. A nation where fear and prejudice no longer predominate.

Most of you Republicans will try to keep your kids far away from the military. Remember Iraq? Your own president Bush told you our freedom was in jeopardy, yet all our young Republicans decided to take a pass. Privileged chicken hawk 20 something Republicans decided their educations and careers were more important, they couldn’t be bothered. It wasn’t the liberals that let Bush down, everyone knew they would be ant- war, Bush got burned by his own anti-fighters. The Republican Chickenhawks watched from the sidelines as their easy war fantasy became an ugly reality.

Who is acceptable for admission into the Christian army? Who gets to do the fighting in the wars you Republicans love others to fight? No young Republicans, no gays? You sure have narrowed the field.

BW, I am glad to tell you that GOD makes it very clear in the bible that homosexuality is an abomination to him and it also says that homosexuals will NOT see the kingdom of Heaven. How does that fit with your deceived attitude about homosexuality. I served in the military when I was young but I would now NOT do that again. BW, which branch did you serve in? Jesus hates divorce. If you are divorced and have ever prayed in public Gods killing machine is not for you.

If you are divorced God hates you and doesn’t want you to kill people.

Your reference to the Bible is true in regard to the word of God, however God also advised us to follow the laws of the land. You seem to believe that this law is going to bring about some drastic change. Well, there were many closeted Homosexuals serving then and always have been. I am a homosexual Veteran of the U.S Military who served 8 years during the 1980’s. and I could not be happier than I am right now. Well, Danny, sounds like you are homosexual and are trying to defend it. In my opinion, there is no way you can defend the actions of homosexuals. As far as ‘my sins’, I didn’t say I don’t have sins. At least I am not trying to legislate them into law.
How about you? I pray and ask for my sins to be forgiven. Homosexuals just try to legislate their sins into law. Its called being blinded to the truth.

Dannnyx Jesus certainly wouldn’t take it in the butt or mouth from another man. That is so perverted. The lesbian lady above said she is bon that way and can’t help it. She doesnt’t have to perform perverted behavior like eating fur-burgers and such. Child molesters can claim they were born that way and can’t help it. That is a bunch of malarkey also and we don’t condone their peverted behavior but are being forced by a government of sick minds and media people with equally sick minds to accept this perverted behavior as normal. It is not normal it is sick. Also the whackos that the integration of blacks into the military service worked out fine and this will too. First being black is not the same as being a person with pervered behavior. It was only right that blacks were accepted as equal (Except Tucker – a mental case) and included in all things American. But a man that will let another man kiss him on the mouth and put a penis in his cavities is just mentally ill and not a normal person. There is no such thing as homophobic just a case of recognizing reality. OK you suckos fire back.

Yep, it was a great victory for America…..instead of having these kids enlist in our military…..let’s let them join gangs. For most, their only crime was to hold their mother’s hands as they crossed the border at age 2 (or 7, or 10)….now let’s continue to destroy their lives and force them into crime….makes perfect sense from a “societal viewpoint”…..why don’t you scream at the next “busboy, roofer, waiter, carpenter, etc. who is working for you “what part of illegal do you not understand”…LMAO at the ignorance of some people

So CT, since you are so patriotic and have such high ideals, then why are you not advocating for the polygamists or the transgendered to join the military? Shame on you for being so discriminatory and your prejudiced!! Why do you get to set the moral and ethical tone? I served my country for over 24 years in the Marines, yet you probably haven’t set foot inside a military recruiting center to shake the hands of the brave men and women who serve, but then have the audacity to say that the Marine Commandant is prejudiced? Lady, he is in uniform so that you and I and ALL Americans can say and believe and have their own opinion. That’s what the Bill of Rights calls Freedom of Speech. General Amos wears his uniform proudly to uphold the ideals of this great nation and would gladly shed his blood so those like you can sit on your arse and criticize those who serve. I love liberals, when you agree with them you are patriots, when you disagree with them you are prejudiced. It’s called FREEDOM missy!!! Say a prayer tonight for my fellow brothern and sisters serving on the front lines in hostile territory just so you can have the liberties you exercise. You and the left nuts disgust me because you don’t have the guts to put your life on the line for any “ideal” as you call it. But you are mighty happy someone else does. Do us all a favor, suit up and head to Afghanistan for just one month. Live in a foxhole on the front lines. You’ll come back with a different perspective on true freedom and liberty.

And then you have the likes of Mike. Poor guy is delusional. His America is focused on his point of view only. He is so in love that his fantasy that he forgets he is now in the minority.

He no longer has the familiar things to cling on to. Like that always bunk “Military Times” internet poll.

Reality rears its ugly head and Mike decides to ignore it. The facts are the facts. Most military officers are very much in favor of gays serving openly. SHOCKING!! Military personnel, by a large majority are in favor of gays serving openly. SHOCKING. The American public is ready for gay to serve openly. SHOCKING.

Yet in Mike’s small world none of that matters. He’s got his fantasy to protect. How ironic.
