Will tea partiers protest the $858 billion tax deal?

During the election season, tea party activists declared deficit-reduction one of their primary goals. The nation is swimming in red ink, they noted, posing a huge burden for generations to come. So I’m waiting for those tea party activists to mount a huge protest over the tax deal between President Obama and Republicans. It is expected to cost $858 billion over ten years.

Where’s that tea party protest? Are they headed to Washington to denounce the deal, as they did repeatedly with the health care plan — which will lower the deficit over ten years?

Yes, there are other things in the deal besides tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans. But extending the tax cuts for all Americans for two years cost $675.2 billion. Extending them for the richest Americans — along with generous cuts to the estate tax — will cost about $50 billion over two years. Are the tea partiers at all concerned about that?

Then were the ethanol subsidies, which most reasonable people agree are a spectacular waste of government resources — a giveaway to corn farmers. But farm state legislators wanted ethanol subsides included in the package, and they are there.
Any day now, I’m sure, tea partiers will gather on the Mall to protest this big addition to the national deficit. Any of you have your bags packed for the party?

Georgia – Fletch,

You may want to not make threats such as those you made toward myself. YOU brought me into YOUR discussion saying I would be ok with waterboarding/torture.

Where do you get this? I don’t recall threatening you at any time. As a point of fact, I strongly believe in any measures that will keep our country safe. Keep had asked about the waterboarding, and I responded as an aside to our previous conversations where you had questioned my background as a legitimate business owner. In addition, you have painted some pretty broad strokes about me that have no basis in fact, and are vague generalizations drawn from comments on a public blog.

Drifter,

The only person running up the debt is the President. Republicans have no power, the President has to work with them for a common goal. The nation is gaining unemployment and debt more quickly under President Obama than under any other.

Back in the early 70s the ATL was hit by a bad ice storm. We were without power for five days, and unable to get to the grocery store until the third day. Coincidentally, we had two families of relatives visiting at that time and if not for a well stocked chest freezer, someone would have been walking to the store. I ate a lot of spaghetti and chili that was cooked on a Coleman camp stove during that time.

No, it’s not. If I had said, “I’m going to contact your employer and make sure you get drug tested” and, I had the ability to do it, then it would be a threat. Otherwise it’s just a statement.

I am a tea party supporter and have already voiced my objections to my representatives. I object to the continued spending w/o offsetting cuts in spending. Further I objected to the SS tax holiday as it guts a deficit troubled program further; I think all of Bush’s tax cuts should be allowed to expire if any are allowed to expire so that all citizens bear their fair share of the trouble we are in and I believe the tax on the dead will have unintended consequences to the businesses left behind. Entrepreneurs may not be the best versed in tax avoidance and their heirs may have to liquidate the businesses left behind to satisfy the democrats need to “soak the rich” by imposing double taxation on their assets. Plus a tax on the dead will provide incentive under the new health care laws to ration care away from rich old folks. I can see the CBO putting out projections that if we just deny heallth care to these geezers, we can increase revenues by 3.6 trillion and thereby balance the budget for the year; maybe offer a bounty on old rich folks, say $1,000 a head for each one you bag. Maybe start with Graany G.

And Cynthia, don’t continue to push the charade that the Health Care passed will reduce the deficit. That’s moronic.

Just my opinion

I’m not saying they aren’t capable of doing more than one thing.

BUT, there are people in the REAL world sweating every second they are doing something else.

What happens if they go on recess before adressing UI extensions (like they did 4th of July)

If they wait that long (for the new Congress) PEOPLE WILL BE WITHOU FOOD OR SHELTER.

I would like for them to stand up and DO what is MOST critical for the people in this country.

Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness is without value without food or shelter.

Just a question: There seems to be a prevailing thought that since the Bush tax cuts passed in 2001 have been in place for 10 years, they are permanent and cannot be touched. Because they have been in place for “X” number of years, they are somehow sacred.

Why doesn’t that apply to unemployment benifits? If you’ve been getting unemployment benifits for 99 weeks then they should be made “permanent”. After all,if you take them away, that would be a “hike”, wouldn’t it? Just pretend the person getting the unemployment benifit is making a million a year and needs it. (It will probably create jobs.)

Just askin…..

I’ve never pretended to a be a fan of the Democrats, but the Republicans always run up the debt and they never reduce it. It really causes me a great deal of pain to admit that because I voted for the liars for years. As a fiscal conservative, I realize that neither the Republicans nor the Democrats are my friends. No one could vote for this tax deal and wear the label of fiscal conservative. Tax cuts without spending cuts is irresponsible and that’s what we’re getting.

the reason we have a progresive tax structure is beccause the more you make the more you use
ex if you own a business your enployees might use a masstransit system with is subed by the government without you would have to pay employees more. if you ship things you use the roads more than someone who dosent even own a car. your employess have be educated at our public schools which childless couples pay for too.

remember everything in this country was paid for buy our grandparents were paid for buy our grandparents for all of us to use and if we don’t keep them up what will we leave for our grandchildren

Waterboarding and Torture has never kept this country safe. Yes, it has and it will. More information means better security.

Minorities are not the only ones getting federal assistance nor do they receive it it based solely on minority basis. Look at the percentages that receive assistance then look at the population percentages. you will see that there are MUCH more minorities receiveing assistnace.

Not everyone receiving assistance is pregnant or a deadbeat or whatever else you chose to label them because of your closed mind. Again, look at the numbers.

Not all Muslims are bad or radical. Agreed, but look at 95% of the terrorist attacks over the past 10 years and tell me who is to blame.

Not all radicals are Muslim…some are Christians. Again refer to previous question. When was the last time you saw a Christian cutting someones head off. or bombing buildings.

Georgian….So you dont think drawing unemployment for 2 YEARS is not milking the system?

I know the question wasn’t ask of me but I know 2 people who have been out of work for long terms, one about a year and the other a year and a half. One has lost her house. $300.00 doesn’t cover a $1,000.00 mortgage payment and in this economy, it didn’t sell. She is in her 50’s and has lost almost everything. Would she move to take a job? Of course! Where is she going to get the money to move? She has paid into unemployment insurance for 30+ years and now people are bitc*ing that she needs it. YES, she is looking and not “milking ” the system. Get to know some of these people. Learn something. Learn that there are NO jobs out there!

Where are the jobs that these tax cuts were supposed to have created over the last 10 years? Why is it just if we DON’T renew them that there won’t be any new jobs? Are they going to magically appear in the next two years?

FACT: 25% of the prisoners released from Gitmo STILL went back to terrorist groups.

FACT: Minorities receive a far greater percentage of the “help” pie than do others.

FACT: Many get prego just to receive a check.

FACT: Never said all Muslims were bad, I said extremists most which happen to be Muslim and you can say that w/out it being a bad thing.

George W. I haven’t tried this so I don’t know the results and I don’t know what your job skills are. Monday start sending out resumes looking for a job…cold. You are “unemployed”. Tell them you have been unemployed for 9 months. No cash coming in. See how long it takes you to get a “good” job, one that you can support your family on, pay the mortgage, car payment, etc.. Not just flipping burgers at McDonalds part-time.

This might be a good lesson for all of us. Possibly a lesson in humility.

There’s a reason for the lack of jobs in this country that no one is saying, and it has to do with population.

Baby boomers are affecting more than just Social Security. They are also affecting employment. Many are still in jobs that traditionally would have been opening up right now. More people are working to an older age. More people are reluctant to give up their jobs and retire bc of the uncertainty of things. These are reasons jobs are hard to find, good paying jobs.
