Nancy Pelosi’s high ethical standards

I didn’t see this coming: The House ethics panel has recommended a tough punishment for Charlie Rangel, the 80-year-old former chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee. Despite his tearful plea for mercy, the panel recommended censure, which is the second toughest punishment at their disposal.
There are a couple of obvious ironies here. The first is this: Rangel might have avoided this embarrassing public spectacle and received a lesser punishment if he had taken the plea deal the ethics committee offered him over the summer. But he rejected it. As a former prosecutor, Rangel should have understood the risk of rejecting the plea.

The second irony is this: It was the iron will of outgoing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who pledged to “drain the swamp” and elevate ethics in the House, that led to Rangel’s predicament. Over the strenuous objections of incoming House Speaker John Boehner, Pelosi insisted on establishing an independent Office of Congressional Ethics to investigate misconduct by members of the House.
Boehner plans to eliminate the OCE. From The National Journal:

Boehner and most of the other House Republicans voted against the OCE’s creation two years ago. Anticipating its closure, the office’s staff director and chief counsel, Leo Wise, has announced that he is leaving for a job with the Office of the U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland.

Under Wise, the OCE has looked into 69 complaints and recommended action on 13 of them. It has operated as an inspector general of sorts and has won praise for reviving the House’s notoriously moribund and secretive ethics process. Among others cases, the office brought to light allegations of wrongdoing by Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., who is now on trial in the House on charges related to fundraising, financial-disclosure, and tax irregularities.

Asked about the OCE, Buck said that Boehner will “take a look at current ethics rules” but that ethics “has really not been the focus of our transition efforts.” GOP leaders probably won’t vote publicly to kill the OCE but will simply quietly defund it next year, said John Wonderlich, policy director of the Sunlight Foundation. The foundation has been working with GOP transition leaders on their transparency agenda and has lobbied for the OCE’s preservation.

Some tea partiers want the OCE to remain open, and an Ohio group has warned Boehner not to shut it down: (h/t ThinkProgress

The Ohio Liberty Council, the main umbrella organization for 58 Tea Party groups in the state, supports efforts to strengthen the OCE and is warning House GOP leaders that any attempt to weaken it will upset Tea Party activists.

“I[f] they move in the opposite direction of transparency that this office provides, I think we will be very upset about that,” said Chris Littleton, president of the Ohio Liberty Council and the Cincinnati Tea Party. “Symbolically, it’s a huge problem for them … they should be as transparent as they can be. Any opposition to that would be inappropriate on their part.”

The tea partiers will lose the fight. Boehner will quietly shut down the office, and House members can resume business as usual.

Wow.

They may defund OCE, but I for one, won’t let it happen quietly.

None of us should.

And what exactly does censure accomplish? Besides standing in the hall and having a public reading of his misdeeds. Is he stripped of all of his committee positions? Is he prevented from offering any earmarks? What exactly is so “Tough” about censure?
By the way I’m undecided about whether the OCE should remain open. What is the cost of this group and how effective is it? 13/69 is not a very high batting average so it doesn’t seem that it was that tough. I don’t know the particulars of any of the cases or the process used to file a complaint so I can’t comment on their effectiveness. I do know that the Rep. from La. was allowed to maintain his position for way too long after he was found with “cool” cash in his refrigerator. I think that was before Pelosi took the speakership but I believe she was a staunch defender of the the Rep. before so I don’t see her as particularily tough, partisan yes, tough no. Just my thoughts.

It seems outrageous to me that this serious punishment amounts to a the same thing as student being criticized in front of the class for cheating on the test. Meanwhile, many of his fellow “students” smirk at the fact they were not caught at their similar cheating, and merely think he was careless, not that he was wrong.

Gupta’s InfoUSA Pays Pelosi’s Son (Culture of Corruption, Pelosi Style)
newsmax ^ | 06/06/2007 | milwguy

Posted on Wednesday, June 06, 2007 5:06:14 PM by milwguy

A database company that has showered money on Bill and Hillary Clinton – and is alleged to have aided scam artists – now appears to have close links to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s family as well.

The firm InfoUSA, headed by major Clinton backer Vinod Gupta, has placed Pelosi’s son, Paul Pelosi Jr., on its payroll – even though he has no experience in the company’s main business activities, NewsMax has learned.

As NewsMax previously reported, InfoUSA repeatedly rented marketing databases to unscrupulous persons who used the information to defraud the unsuspecting elderly, investigators found.

The company is also under fire in a shareholder lawsuit which alleges that Gupta is appropriating company funds for personal use and his political pet projects.

Shareholder critics are furious that Gupta had InfoUsa pay former President Bill Clinton $2.1 million in “consulting fees” since he left the White House, with another $1.2 million promised.

Story Continues Below

Gupta has also spent roughly $1 million of InfoUsa funds to provide corporate jet flights for both President Clinton and his wife Hillary.

Pelosi’s son Paul acknowledged he has also been taking trips on corporate jets provided by Info USA.

Paid $180,000 for Second Job

Just four weeks after Nancy Pelosi became speaker of the House this past January, Gupta and InfoUSA hired her son as a senior vice president. He told NewsMax InfoUsa pays him $180,000 a year.

Even though his job with InfoUSA is considered full-time, Paul Pelosi continues another full-time job, as a home loan officer at Countrywide Home Loans, part of Countrywide Financial, in San Mateo, a suburb of San Francisco.

While InfoUSA is based in Omaha, Pelosi said he reports to a small InfoUSA office in San Mateo.

In two interviews, Paul Pelosi confirmed that Gupta hired him as senior vice president for strategic development starting Feb. 1, just after Pelosi’s mother took the gavel as speaker on Jan. 4. He said his mother is aware of his new job.

A person familiar with the arrangement says Gupta treats Pelosi as a “trophy” and has the Speaker’s son accompany him at high profile meetings around the country.

Pelosi denied the suggestion he is being used because of his family ties.

“I don’t think that’s really what happens,” he said.

Nor does he “think” his hiring was related to his mother becoming speaker, he said. But he acknowledged the timing raises a “good question.”

“It’s interesting, timing-wise,” Pelosi said. “I don’t see it that way, but I could see why you’d ask the question … I guess you always wonder why somebody hires you, right?”

Asked how he can hold two full-time jobs at once, Pelosi said Countrywide is satisfied as long as he fulfills his quotas.

Spokesmen for Nancy Pelosi and for InfoUSA did not respond to requests by NewsMax for comment.

Funny….this article doesn’t really mention that Nancy’s husband was on the board of BOTH…Countrywide and Bank of America. She is as crooked as they come.

Ms. Tucker; An ethical congress is a oxymoron. The OCE is just a window dressing group established to punish those in congress with smoke and mirrors. Rangel should have been kicked out, but only had his hand smacked. Me thinks many more in congress would have been discovered being unethical if the OCE would have done their job diligently, but this would have upset the apple cart on both sides of the aisle. OCE locating only one dishonest fish in a pond full of them does not make the OCE a success.

Congressional Ethics office reviewed 23 complaints in first quarter of 2010
By Susan Crabtree – 04/20/10 11:33 AM ET

The Office of Congressional Ethics has reviewed 23 inquiries into members conduct so far this year, according to the office’s quarterly report.

In just a year and a half since its founding, the OCE has reviewed complaints against nearly 11 percent of House members.

The Office, which reviews potential ethics rules violations and recommends further investigation by the full House ethics committee, opened 25 inquiries in 2009. Of the new investigations this quarter, the OCE reported ending 18 probes after the preliminary review stage, a step that prevents disclosure of any information related to the members and the complaints against them.

The members under investigation are only revealed if the OCE recommends further review by the ethics panel, which is made up of members of Congress and a staff of lawyers and investigators.

Of the seven cases the OCE continued to investigate after further review, it only recommended further action by the ethics committee in one case so far, bringing its total to 13 cases the office has referred for more investigation since its inception. Six other cases are under a second phase OCE review.

The one case forwarded to the ethics committee focused on allegations that former Rep. Nathan Deal (R-Ga.), a candidate for governor, far exceeded House limits on earned outside income and used his staff to help maintain a stream of income from a no-bid state business deal.

Deal resigned his House seat an hour after he voted no on the healthcare reform bill March 21. The next day was the deadline for the ethics committee to determine whether it should issue a report. The OCE’s board of governors voted unanimously to release its report and did so March 29.

CT, I can’t believe that you consider censure to be “tough punishment”. It may be the second toughest punishment Congress can meet out – but it is a puny slap on the wrist. What would happen to you or I if we overlooked reporting taxable income to the IRS? There would be penalties and interest to pay inaddition to the back taxes and it could even result in a jail term. Charlie Rangel got a sweetheart deal from the IRS and they declined to asses either interest or penalites. This totally reeks of privilege.

Tucker, Here are some examples of some high ethical standards for ya from Judical Watch. Poor (former speaker) Pelosi. The cross she had to bear for “Offical Travel”.
In response to a series of requests for military aircraft, one Defense Department official wrote, “Any chance of politely querying [Pelosi's team] if they really intend to do all of these or are they just picking every weekend?…[T]here’s no need to block every weekend ‘just in case’…” The email also notes that Pelosi’s office had, “a history of canceling many of their past requests.”
One DOD official complained about the “hidden costs” associated with the speaker’s last minute changes and cancellations. “We have…folks prepping the jets and crews driving in (not a short drive for some), cooking meals and preflighting the jets etc.”
The documents include a discussion of House Ethics rules and Defense Department policies as they apply to the speaker’s requests for staff, spouses and extended family to accompany her on military aircraft. In May 2008, for example, Pelosi requested that her husband join her on a Congressional Delegation (CODEL) into Iraq. The DOD explained to Pelosi that the agency has a written policy prohibiting spouses from joining CODEL’s into combat zones.
Documents obtained from the U.S. Army include correspondence from Speaker Pelosi’s office requesting an Army escort and three military planes to transport Pelosi and other members of Congress to Cleveland, Ohio, for the funeral services of the late Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones. Pelosi noted in her letter of August 22, 2008, that such a request, labeled “Operation Tribute” was an “exception to standard policy.”
The documents also detail correspondence from intermediaries for Speaker Pelosi issuing demands for certain aircraft and expressing outrage when requested military planes were not available. “It is my understanding there are no G5s available for the House during the Memorial Day recess. This is totally unacceptable…The speaker will want to know where the planes are…” wrote Kay King, Director of the House Office of Interparliamentary Affairs. In a separate email, when told a certain type of aircraft would not be available, King writes, “This is not good news, and we will have some very disappointed folks, as well as a very upset [s]peaker.”
During another email exchange DOD staff advised Kay King that one Pelosi military aircraft request could not be met because of “crew rest requirements” and offered to help secure commercial travel. Kay King responded: “We appreciate the efforts to help the codel [sic] fly commercially but you know the problem that creates with spouses. If we can find another way to assist with military assets, we would like to do that.”
Speaker Pelosi came under fire in 2007 for requesting a 42-seat Air Force carrier to ferry the Speaker and her staff back and forth between San Francisco, CA and Washington, DC. Former House Speaker Dennis Hastert was allowed access to a 12-seat commuter jet for security reasons after the events of 9/11.

“Taken together, these documents show that Speaker Pelosi treats the Air Force like her personal airline,” said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton. “Not only does Speaker Pelosi issue unreasonable requests for military travel, but her office seems unconcerned about wasting taxpayer money with last minute cancellations and other demands.”

Perhaps you could provide all of us your definition “High Ethical Standards” so the ignorant conservative can become informed!

Granny; My problem is not that we have OCE, it’s who makes up the panel: Congressman investigating Congressman. As a former MP and police officer, I can tell you the “Internal Affairs Units” were not always impartial and police investigating police does not always have the correct outcome. If a case against a congressman goes into the second phase, the problem should be brought forward to the public, the real jury to our elected officials and let us make the determination on guilt and punishment. Even adding lawyers and investigators to the panel does not make it legit as most of us know these people never lie.

The cost of US healthcare, in a free market economy, is that all the R&D, and all that cancer elimination technique that is being developed, and allows those who are gravely ill to survive, is very, very expensive – for every solution discovered, there are probably 50 that are tried and prove useless. That said, the non for profit hospitals in GA are exploiting the system pretty bad – some moron cardiologist at Tanner Medical Center scheduled me for a stress test – no problem, had one a few years ago, costs about $500 for 30 minutes of work (good value for the hospital); when I was being checked in, the tech gave me the procedure estimate – $7000!! Regardless of party affiliation, conservatives in Congress will have to take control and steer this republic back to its roots. For the folks in mid-town that means abiding by what the Constitution says and not what they want it to say.

President Reagan had his famous Executive Order 12612, called Federalism. One section stated -

Sec. 2. Fundamental Federalism Principles. In formulating and implementing policies that have federalism implications, Executive departments and agencies shall be guided by the following fundamental federalism principles:

(a) Federalism is rooted in the knowledge that our political liberties are best assured by limiting the size and scope of the national government.

(b) The people of the States created the national government when they delegated to it those enumerated governmental powers relating to matters beyond the competence of the individual States.

All other sovereign powers, save those expressly prohibited the States by the Constitution, are reserved to the States or to the people.

Now, that was a President.

The arrogance of most politicians today reflects their separation from the public and from reality. And Nancy is the poster child for this kind of behavior. Privileged, rich (worth nearly 26M), Pelosi lives in some kind of competitive dream world, thriving on power plays and deception. She is about as far from an ethical leader as they come and she certainly is not helping the Democrats in their efforts to repair the damage of Nov 2, much of which was Nancy’ s fault. She and others like her still don’t get it. And you wonder why the public identifies with Sarah Palin?

You not only need to balance budget, you also need to have 500 billion in surplus, pay down debt & repay SS trust fund. I would immediately adopt import tariffs, both standard ($1.00 per unit imported) plus protective, “Wage Equalization Tariff”; plus, I would increase a max of SS payments to $250,000 from current $97,000 cut off. I would not be surprised of Ms. Tucker provided Pres Clinton with a guide of how to adopt policy initiatives and guidelines – “float an idea into the public realm & see if the public embraces it or rejects it” (also known as focus groups). Clinton based a lot his public policy on this system – some ideas were roundly rejected and quickly disappeared from newspapers around the nation, other ideas that showed traction were more fully developed.

The arrogant brooks no weakness in himself and may even secretly rejoice to find flaws in others. John Boehner has talked about how the Republicans will be so much better than the Democrats. He will bring a new perspective to the Speaker’s job. Will he be any different now that he is boss! I doubt it – he will push his ideas through just as others have done before him. Mr. Bohner is not a humble person nor does he bring out that characteristic in Republicans. That is neither good or bad.

The two years he and others have spent saying no will push the Republican leadership. Power and being humble do not match.

The amount of criticism given about Nancy Pelosi is unwarranted. Every Speaker uses power as that is the way of government Reading history would be a good idea for the critics. That being said I am sure that Nancy Pelosi is not perfect. It is another case of putting the blame on one person instead of placing blame on all who were in leadership positions from both parties.

When I read comments and view some of the quotes I wonder where the views are being printed. No member of the Air Force who has the responsibility of flying dignitaries or working on the scheduling or maintenance of the planes would be out there giving their views. Just another red herring being tossed around.

What is clear is that politicians do need some parameters as they go about the nation’s business. Power is a very strong motivator for good and bad. The Republicans have had their share of politicians who have overstepped their bounds. Oversight is necessary for both parties because people do not always use power for the good of the country.

Pablo

I see your point, but let me explain why I think this does speak against her ethics. I do not think anyone in their right mind would go to a lawywer’s office and sign a blank piece of paper with the assurance that they would find out what they signed for at a later date. If the bill was that good, it would have been discussed in the open, instead of the way it was done. The mere thought that I have to accept something from a politician just because they think is good, but I cannot see it until it is a done deal has the delicate aroma of rotten fish. By the way, the republicans will set themselves up for failure if they decide to eliminate any and all mechanisms to keep the members of Congress in check. They need to keep very present that the American electorate voted NOT for them, but against democrats…

Cynthia, what is truly ironic is that you think censure is a tough punishment. With all the waffling, spinning and outright lying that goes on in Washington, a little public rebuke from Congress won’t be any issue for Rangle. He’ll pay his back taxes and move on. Sadly, there is no one on either side that cares about ethical behavior of congressmen. They need to have an outside office for ethics investigations that they can’t defund and give them power to actually punish the liars and cheats we send to Washington. Censure would humiliate most people, but not a politician. Their power needs to be taken away. They need to be sent home without the ability to be elected again and they probably need some time in jail if they broke laws.

This is a last ditch effort to make it appear as if she gives a rat’s butt about what the American people want. She is nothing more than a hypocrite. She ascribes to the teachings of the Catholic church. She holds this as her faith; but, espouses practices counter to her own professed religion. Hypocrite. Priests in her own parish do not let her take communion because of this. That’s a character flaw. She is not deserving of the label, “High ethical standards.”

Tucker, I ask again, how does it feel to bail water with a cup on a sinking ship?

Your feeble attempts to think that your literary prose is somehow going to sway any of the clear-thinking, conservatives that are the majority of Georgia (and the country) is laugheble…

Isnt there some liberal think-tank up there in DC you can dive into?

Perhaps you should spend your time talking about how Obama’s fiscal policies are the exact replication of Carter and that the exact same results of stagnation, (and soon to be) high inflation and interests rates and continued unemployment are to be expected for two more years…

Kammy,
And another one
Term limits.

We already have term limits, they’re called elections.

Yes, we have elections but I’m not sure you know it, but we in Georgia can’t vote for Pelosi, so terms limits are the only way to get the bad eggs out, and beleive me there are a bunch of them, on both sides of the asile

Congress critters are re-elected at a rate of 80-90%, so when I here someone talking about “term limits,” it’s always about someone else’s congress critter, just as your post illustrates.

If you want Pelosi out of Congress so badly, then move to her district and vote her out.

Ford refused all money offered by Obama. They have been making record profits due to their own hard work and free market thinking. Second….Obama DID NOT save GM. He saved the union and preserved union pensions. GM now owes the US taxpayers $10 billion (which we will never see a penny of) after the government dumps all of it’s shares. We also let the Chinese take a large ownership stake of one of the oldest and largest American corporations. Had GM been allowed to file for bankruptcy and re-structure on their own…they would’ve been back on their feet a long time ago without our grandkids having to pick up the tab.

Thanks. And yes, you are very correct in saying that Washington has been doing this to us for the longest time (under both parties). The good thing is that the American electorate seems to have awakened, and it is more willing to be more critical of their elected officials than ever before. If we can keep this trend going, eventually we will have real public servants in Congress. I just pray that that happens before it’s too late.

High ethical standards? Would that be the kind of California “high” such as pertains to medicinal marijuana? I can’t believe that anyone would buy into Nancy Pelosi being regarded as ethically strong. Draining the swamp, transparency, and watching The People’s Money is something that she has been an abysmal failure at achieving. Closed doors, complete refusal to acknowlege the will of the American people, and wasteful expenditures( increased spending on her private air service) are just a drop in the bucket of so called ‘accomplishments”. She’s right where she should be, Minority Leader” because she made her party the minority.

This is why I said: President Obama should have not done anything and let all you conservatives and your families go thru what people did in 1929.

Pelosi knew about the CIA waterboarding torture for years, then when the news went public she was in the front of the pack pointing fingers of anger and disgust towards W and Cheney. She highlighted this all by accusing the CIA of lying about telling her, but she quickly dropped the subject once the CIA fought back calling her the liar.

Pelosi knows ethics.

For the record, I know that. My ‘thong’ isn’t all atwist. I don’t even own a thong, but thanks for being so concerned about my undergarment situation.

As for Gm’s post at 3:43 – You’re argument is flawed in oh-so-many ways. Let’s break it down:

“The problem with you conseratives most are hypocrites: most of you hate goverment, only if is is not doing nothing for you: You people are like that air head Sara Palin, she goes around talking bad about goverment but 75% of the people in Alaska have government jobs.”
*Not to debate the figures with you, but her name is Sarah, not Sara, I’ve never heard her talk bad about government, but I have heard her talk about the bad-side of government (over-reaching imperialism, that sort of thing).*

“If the President had of done nothing millions more jobs would have been lost,”
*Conjecture, this statement means nothing. It’s hard to argue a bunch of “what ifs”*

“I know you Anti Americans care less about the families that would have been on the street, untill its your family.”
*That’s “couldn’t care less” and “until” (fixed your typos, props to Kamchak), and I like how you call everyone who disagrees with your position “anti-American.” Nice job.*

“I agree President Obama should not have done nothing, he shoulld have put you people back to the great depression, like George Bush left this country, just maybe then, most of you ungrateful Anti Americans would have given him credit.”
*This statement actually makes my head hurt. No single person is responsible for the state of the economy, and I apologize if a centrist country doesn’t buy in completely on a government take over of the economy. I’ll give Obama credit when credit is due, but right now most of the plans coming out of Washington (on both sides of the aisle) involve class and race warfare, wealth envy, and wealth distribution.*

I do remember old Newtie getting in ethics trouble and saw the writing on the wall and did the honorable thing (unlike Rangel and Waters) and resigned. Republicans tend to do that (i.e. Mark Foley) and not hang around like Gerry Studds, after being convicted.

When Newtie was “forced out for ethics problems”, I believe the Republicans were in charge, Bob Livingston, another Rep with ethics problems, who also resigned, was the speaker, followed by Hastert.
