McConnell: Defeating Obama “single most important job”

Last week, both President Obama and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell gave interviews to the National Journal in which they said something very similar: Each man said he and his party needed to view the uncoming mid-term results with “humility.”

Obama:
“I think it’s premature to talk about vetoes because maybe I’m a congenital optimist, but I feel as if, post-election, regardless of how it plays out, the most important message that will be sent by the American people is, we want people in Washington to act like grown-ups.”

McConnell:
“We need to have a humble, grateful response about this election.”

Inside the Beltway, that was widely read as an acknowledgment by both — but especially by McConnell, for the need for compromise on important issues in the next Congress.

But McConnell’s gesture of conciliation didn’t hold for a week. This week, he gave another interview to National Journal, in which he said “the single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.”

MCCONNELL: We need to be honest with the public. This election is about them, not us. And we need to treat this election as the first step in retaking the government. We need to say to everyone on Election Day, “Those of you who helped make this a good day, you need to go out and help us finish the job.”

NATIONAL JOURNAL: What’s the job?

MCCONNELL: The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.

Perhaps McConnell didn’t mean to, but he provided insight into his contempt for the plight of average voters. What’s the most important job? Not creating a climate to aid job creation. Not cutting the deficit. Not even cutting taxes.

No. As has been the case since Obama’s inauguration, the GOP has as its main goal trying to make sure the president fails — even if the country fails right along with him.

Defeating Reid and Pelosi ranks right up there with Obama. I would prefer “arrested” and “incarcerated”, but will settle for “defeated”.

Oh Keep,

I get you! Since its so insensitive to call blacks names, you have to RESPECT them and call them by their name. You can call Bush a monkey but you cant Obama because Bush is white. You can call your brother a N word but whites cant because it has a different meaning for a black person to do it. A black person can call a white a cracker because it doesnt have any racial undertone to it! I get you perfectly!

Wrong KEEP! If you’d stop living in the 60’s, being called boy would not mean anything to you. I has no meaning for a person now to tell a black guy to “Come here boy” anymore than it does for a white person to be told the same. You cant keep using the things from yesterday to make an excuse for today. You want to be taken seriously, yet you dont do what it takes to be taken seriously.

I think it was very clear that health care was shoved down our throat. That is 99% of the reason Dems are going down in a few days. NO ONE can deny that. The tactics used by this president and dems put the Presidency and Congress to mockery, and that is a shame. Time to get the baboons out of there!

Granny- stop the macro madness. gov’t waste and abuse is out of control from defense to medicare. It would take 5-10 honest folks with 2 brain cells each that work to cut 10% of the waste and abuse. It is not “I don’t want to solve pre existing conditions”- it is simply I want a transparent gov’t that has been promised for years and not even close to being delivered. The current administration is as bad as bush/cheney.

Some ppl are stupid,

They came in with a surplus, but do you remember what happened Sept 11, 2001? That effectively put us in a hole. Financially speaking things went crazy. I can still remember watching the destruction the stock market took. You can blame Bush for tanking the surplus all you want, but the facts are that circumstances put us in a position to where it was inevitible we would go into a deficit.

Now, Dems had a chance to pull us out, and failed to do so. Why must I list the data from 07. I went to the mid point of the decade I could find and put the amount. This happened to be when Dems took charge AND when they began blocking and pushing through their own liberal agenda

Repubs are taking the House and the Senate. In two years they are taking the White House back from NOBAMA and are going to make even bigger gains in the House and Senate. No need to be angry or bitter. Just realize that its what the majority of Americans want.

After the failed PROMISE of Obama where he falsely tricked people into believing he was the Messiah, Americans wised up to his act. No number of liberals and blacks will be able to change that in 2012.

The question isn’t whether Republicans are going to make gains….it’s what they are going to do with them? In the midst of all the hatred of the President and the Democrats in Congress has anyone really asked themselves what this Republican majority will do if they control the executive and legislative branches. Most comments I see here are anti-Democrat but not pro-Republican. Again I ask everyone what do you want from a Republican congress? Besides overturning everything just put in, where are we headed? Does the unemployment rate go down because of the election? Does the deficit go down because of the election? Do we stop running trillion dollar deficits because of the election? I think everyone can acknowledge that you have little actual hope of witnessing those things. Anger is not conducive to good decision making…just take one moment and think about what you want combined with the fact the two party duopoly is bankrupt.

I have just one question for CT and all of you on this blog.

What percentage of taxes on my income is enough to make everyone happy? At what point has the Local, State, Federal Gov’t, and Social Security Admin taken enough of my income?

I have my own business…a single person LLC. I make about $100K a year. Currently I am paying over $40K in taxes. How much is enough? Is it $50K, $60K, $75K or more? Should I pay the Gov’t 90% of my income and be in poverty myself? How much of my hard earned income should the Gov’t expect and be happy with?

I do not get a Gov’t check or government assistance of any kind. How much of my money is acceptable to everyone to give to the Gov’t for national security, infrastructure, police, fire, and social programs?

Everyone who votes for either party should ask themselves that question. At what point does the Gov’t over reach and under deliver. Who can we all elect so the America gets what it pays for?

As an aside: Harry Reid is one of the wealthiest members of Congress. He has been in Gov’t since 1966! Harry has had roughly 3-5 years in the public sector back in the 60’s. Does everyone agree that any politician should become a multi millionaire in a Gov’t job?

In my opinion…that’s part of what’s wrong.

SPAT,

The deficit was impacted by the deepening of the recession we had been going through for a while! All that leads back to the attack and the fight we had to undertake because of that. Now, the policies of Obama after 08 has put our deficit in an even bigger hole. The number we should look at is how much it has grown in TWO YEARS! It has grown faster than ever before, and it is bc of a failed stimulus!

The more things change the more they remain the same. This country just goes from one extreme to another. I think we should abolish political parties or at the very least have term limits, 2 for Senate and 5 for House, but the politicians we elect never want them. How about lets vote for the best person for the job instead of blindly supporting a political party. Anyone who can vote for a character like Nathan Deal really can not care about the welfare of this state. However, due to political parties, Deal was forced on the GOP ticket leaving GOP supporters without a real option.

Keep in mind 40% is only what is directly paid out of my income. Calculate the sales tax, inherent tax, and corporate tax on ALL goods and services. That could be another 20%. So I am now paying roughly $60K to the Gov’t. It adds up…doesn’t it?
