NAACP should have left the tea party alone

There are about 100,000 excellent causes the NAACP could take up right now— countless crusades that would elevate people of color, strengthen human rights and weaken discrimination. Launching a broadside against the Tea Party isn’t one of them.

I am disappointed that Ben Jealous insisted on forging ahead with a campaign against the Tea Party. It will backfire badly. The WaPo’s Dana Milbank outlines some of the more inflammatory rhetoric that NAACP officials used in a conference call yesterday:

The Rev. William Barber, president of the North Carolina NAACP chapter, used his time on the conference call to liken the Tea Partyers to southern racists during Reconstruction and church bombers and assassins during the civil rights era.

“We have to have particular concern about supremacy attitudes, violence, hate language, particularly when it’s rooted in notions of restoring or taking back or redeeming the country,” Barber said. “Because, in the American social-historical-political psyche, we have historical markers that tell us how dangerous this is to be given legitimacy.”

For instance:

“We know in 1867 when the Ku Klux Klan, for instance, laid out its political purposes, it was about restoring and re-enfranchising, if you will.”

“And then when you go to the Reconstruction Era, you find this same attempt to spew this division, this hate language out…. ‘We need to restore America. We need to take it back.’”

Barber moved on to 1963. “When George Wallace used this language and themes of division, very vitriolic hate language,” Barber said, “Medgar Evers was killed in June of that year… We had the bombing of a church, four girls were killed at Sunday school and then we had a president assassinated.”

Oh, for heaven’s sake. I remember the church bombings of 1963. I remember George Wallace. And I tell you that these times are nothing like those. Barber is guilty of doing the very things that so many tea party activists do — making such exaggerated claims that they hold absolutely no credibility. Obama is a Nazi? That’s crazy. Tea partiers are like Birmingham church bombers? That’s crazy, too.

Here is my prediction: Tea party supporters will use the NAACP’s report to claim that the organization painted all tea partiers — and all Obama critics — as racists. And the tea party will win the cage match.

robert- The “tea party” uses the same weapons of choice as the “taliban” which are hatred, fear and rage/mob mentality.

Is this why they have so much violence and destruction at those tea party rallies? Oh, I forgot. They have never had a single episode. It’s all your peaceful liberal/union rallies that cause all the problems(see France, Greece). I guess it’s because they “care” so much.

Huh,How am I marginalized? I never mentioned anything about being wronged. I’m 28. Jim Crow was dead before I was born. I went to Auburn and VT, I got just as many white friends as black. I worked hard and got everything that my hard work afforded. I’m gonna need you to read and comprehend my comments before you reply next time.

Black people should be given their own land here in the U.S. Maybe SC, GA, FL and AL. They should be supported financially and materially by the U.S. and allowed to govern themselves as they see fit. Hey, it’s working in Palestine.

Some People are stupid,

So a group that is the majority of our population is call a minority. Gee, and people wonder why government speak has no meaning anymore.

I agree with you that due to under representation they should be included. As I stated a couple of times – it was your statement that Affirmative Action was only for minorities, it was written to protect any race that suffers discrimination. It was written color blind. While that is an idealists view on it, sadly it is not enforced that way.

Question: A black person is interviewed for a position, highly qualified..highly educated….and is told that once he’s placed in the position, he would be training his MANAGER!! If the person is capable of training the manager, doesn’t that same person have the ability to BE the manager?? If it is NOT racial, please explain what ELSE it could be!!!

The reason it’s not enforced that way is because the majority is mostly white men. They are always gonna be adversely affected by it because its a minority protector.

No, HDB, it doesn’t mean the black guy should get the job! I am a woman and I’ve had to train my male managers but you never saw me running off to cry discrimination! You obviously seek discrimination everywhere you go! Do you think it’s ok to deny qualified white college applicants admission so that a college can meet their minority quota, even though the minority isn’t qualified?

One – I have NEVER allowed anyone to marginalize me; white society has marginalized me since they don’t believe that I am educated, experienced AND well-travelled!! For numerous positions I have applied for, I have had my credentials QUESTIONED as being authentic!!

Two – I am probably OLDER than you…HAVE EXPERIENCED Jim Crow, segregation, marginalization…..and have surpassed expectation; I ALSO see history attempting to repeat itself….and am speaking out to PREVENT the reoccurrance!!

Three – The paradigm that is portrayed by many pertaining to black people (lazy, uneducated, unmotivated…) is CONTRARY to everything that I have experienced!! I rail at the blanket condemnation of black people by conservatives…..my experience is that the preponderance of black people are educated, hard working, well versed/travelled!! THAT is what’s NOT being seen!! SPAS is evidence of those that I know of….not what is seen via the media!!

There IS a problem when a person is more qualified than his contemporary — and has to TRAIN his manager…doesn’t matter who it is!! In certain instances, it IS discrimination….either against the black man….or a woman!! I don’t seek discrimination…it rears its head occasionally!!

Do you think it’s ok to deny qualified black college applicants admission so that a college can meet their legacy quota, even though the legacy isn’t qualified? Works the same way!!!

I’ll give you a GOOD example of why Whites are so tired of hearing Racism and are now yelling it back. A position at the hospital where I worked as an IT Manager came open. Understand, I have a Degree AND multiple certifications and over 25 years in the industry.. I KNOW my stuff. I myself sat down one day and wrote out 25 questions that ANY applicant for the position of Network Engineer should know.. if they dont.. they wouldnt even be considered. Out of 50 applicants I had ONE black, a girl who’s sister worked at the hospital. The requirements for the position was .. at a MINIMUM “Microsoft Certified Professional”. We however overlooked that for the girl to interview with us. It was “Professional Courtesy” to one of our employees that we did this. It had nothing to do with her being black, yellow, brown or purple.

Out of the 25 “Real WORLD IT” questions, the girl answered ZERO correctly. She had only been involved with editing a website at her prior position… NO OTHER IT Experience. She was ELIMINATED from consideration. I’m talking about a person who could Not even give us the term for DNS – (Domain Naming System) used in the internet… yet she interviewed for a Network Engineers position… Go figure.

A week after we hired a young man (who answered 24 of the 25 questions) we (the IT Director and I) got called into the Presidents office and asked why we were being racist? Her charges were that the test was “SO HARD that even the guy giving it couldnt answer the questions”.. funny, I’m the one who came up with them!?!?!? Anyway.. we explain how a rock out in the garden had a better chance of knowing more about Information Technology than that girl did. She got the NAACP involved and even the local paper. She pulled out EVERY possible gun she could to get that job. In the end our decision stood when the facts came out.

Jump forward 5 years, I’m the IT Manager for another Technology company. We were looking for a Network Engineer for our new diversification (business). We interviewed 15 candidates. In the end a really smart and intelligent BLACK man landed the job. I wont use his name, but worked out well.. did his job and knew what he was suppose to know. We became good friends. He even came up a few times to visit me in the hospital when I was laid up. He called me his “Brother from another mother”.

The girl who tried to bully the hospital into giving her the job by screaming “racism” went home empty handed.. but this happens more times than you can imagine. There was no “separate” test for blacks, latinos.. there was ONE test.. either pass it or fail it. If you cant pass it and others can.. look in the mirror for the problem. We found out later that the previous employer (who contacted us) was bullied into hiring her in the same fashion. He ended up hiring “ANOTHER” Web expert to actually manage the website with her just doing small edits. She couldt explain a Cascading Style Sheet no more than she could Physics.

I think even BLACKS are tired of Blacks pulling the race card. “CJ” (as I’ll call him) was an Independent. He would get so angry at both ends of the spectrum.. same as me. He was just a hard working AMERICAN .. like me trying to get through. Whats happening is that the Extreme fringes are furious that yelling “Racism” dont work no more. Its been used and used and used until now.. it means nothing. NOW these same people cant use it as a crutch.

These are the same people who have no more idea about who REAL TEA PARTY people are than a man on the moon. They envision Jim Crow incarnate as the ones behind the movement.. not realizing that the Tea Party are just normal folks, housewives, working people that are FED UP with Washington DC BULLSH**. It is in fact the fringe elements who have infiltrated some Tea Party branches and tried to paint them in a bad light until they were EXPOSED and thrown out. They always say, if you cant beat em, join them and ruin them from the inside. The Tea Party is a Movement.. thats it. NOT a 3rd party.. it has Republicans, Democrats and everything else in between in its ranks. AND.. it has A LOT of black, minorites too.

So.. if whoever keeps shouting “inequality” will shut up long enough.. they will discover that they are morons for ignoring all the opportunites that they missed because they were BLIND..

Without knowing all the specifics, manager is not the position he’s being hired for. He might know more than the manager in one specific area but not be covering the scope of the entire dept. The place I worked in college, I trained the three managers over me. (One was black if that makes you feel better). I was a college student so they weren’t going to give me the job because I was considered a “temp” employee (I worked there 3 years).

It’s not an assumption if the EXPERIENCE has shown this to be true!! I don’t consider myself a victim of myself…..but I know that the only entitlement I EVER ask for is the OPPORTUNITY and CONSIDERATION that ANY American should receive…no more..no less! The problem is that in many circimstances, that hasn’t happened! Attitude?? NO! Credentials? NO?? I can deal with seniority or someone having better credentials…that’s not even an issue with me…..but when ALL are considered…and I have the best credentials….and am NOT hired for someone with lesser…comparatively…..what OTHER than race is the primary focus!! The “loose cannon” would be the one who has the lesser capability to perform…which would drag everyone ELSE in a company DOWN!!
