NAACP should have left the tea party alone

There are about 100,000 excellent causes the NAACP could take up right now— countless crusades that would elevate people of color, strengthen human rights and weaken discrimination. Launching a broadside against the Tea Party isn’t one of them.

I am disappointed that Ben Jealous insisted on forging ahead with a campaign against the Tea Party. It will backfire badly. The WaPo’s Dana Milbank outlines some of the more inflammatory rhetoric that NAACP officials used in a conference call yesterday:

The Rev. William Barber, president of the North Carolina NAACP chapter, used his time on the conference call to liken the Tea Partyers to southern racists during Reconstruction and church bombers and assassins during the civil rights era.

“We have to have particular concern about supremacy attitudes, violence, hate language, particularly when it’s rooted in notions of restoring or taking back or redeeming the country,” Barber said. “Because, in the American social-historical-political psyche, we have historical markers that tell us how dangerous this is to be given legitimacy.”

For instance:

“We know in 1867 when the Ku Klux Klan, for instance, laid out its political purposes, it was about restoring and re-enfranchising, if you will.”

“And then when you go to the Reconstruction Era, you find this same attempt to spew this division, this hate language out…. ‘We need to restore America. We need to take it back.’”

Barber moved on to 1963. “When George Wallace used this language and themes of division, very vitriolic hate language,” Barber said, “Medgar Evers was killed in June of that year… We had the bombing of a church, four girls were killed at Sunday school and then we had a president assassinated.”

Oh, for heaven’s sake. I remember the church bombings of 1963. I remember George Wallace. And I tell you that these times are nothing like those. Barber is guilty of doing the very things that so many tea party activists do — making such exaggerated claims that they hold absolutely no credibility. Obama is a Nazi? That’s crazy. Tea partiers are like Birmingham church bombers? That’s crazy, too.

Here is my prediction: Tea party supporters will use the NAACP’s report to claim that the organization painted all tea partiers — and all Obama critics — as racists. And the tea party will win the cage match.

The NAACP is irrelevant. They are no longer needed. They cater to radical leftism. They endorse laziness, non-responsibility, and violence. If they want something to do why don’t they tell young blacks to stop having so many kids while not having a JOB or even a high school diploma. Nobody takes the NAACP seriously anymore except lazy blacks and guilty white liberals.

Cynthia cannot write a straight up article to save her life. This is why I steer clear of her. Now and then, I read something that catches my eye…then like a blogger says, she RUINS it with the last sentence. Want to talk racist? Look at the author above. CT is the biggest racist of them all. She is just a bit more subtle about it.

“Ben Jealous”? Is this a real name or a stage name? Either way, it fits…Ben appears to be really jealous of the Tea Party’s ability to attract supporters.

“Tea party supporters will use the NAACP’s report to claim that the organization painted all tea partiers – and all Obama critics – as racists”

That was settled long ago…they’re just throwing gasoline on the fire at this point. The MSM has been in on the Tea Party bashing all along, too…and then the MSM execs (and Democrats, by extension) wonder why the majority of the public doesn’t trust them.

Georgian…When Im walking down the streeets of ATL with my wife and kids and thugs are on the street and approaching you for everything, protection is needed. When muggings, robbery, and gang activity take place, protection is needed.

So you are suggesting that only black people commit crimes? Not white people? Or is it just that you feel safer in a suburb like Alpharetta if a white woman comes to your car and gives the same story about needing money. Or when white kids join gangs?

Or perhaps, as some studies have shown, you have a adverse irrational reaction unperceptable to you, against blacks and feel threatened.

Crime is not a single race issue. It is an economic issue.

I never knew about JIm Crow until I came to this blog. That was not part of my lifestyle.

Who exalted the Jim Crow segregation to be the majority. I understood it to be localized and mostly one geographic area. This sounds like the story of one atheist comes to a christain community and demands the cross be taken down. Is that the minority being equal to the majority you are speaking of. Patisay,

The ones that FIGHT so hard for the pledge to not be recited. The ones that dont believe (OBAMA) that you should put your hand over your heart in honor of that flag and recite the pledge. The ones that want the anthem wiped out. THOSE ARE THE ONES. The ones that fight against public prayer, that refuse to acknowledge the need for GOD!

I dont think any religion should be taught. IT wasnt being then! That was lies from liberals! Christians believe in a persons right to choose which way they will go, so if that person was confronted with Muslim or Mormon beliefs that would be their choice. Prayer is schools is not a thing that was bad. The right to pray individually has been taken away. The right to even mention the Almighty or show reference to Him has been restricted in many places. It is a shame that many do not even know who He is because of the ingorance of few.

Yeah a 15 second moment of silence is really “prayer still in the school”. Youre a joke. The verbal saying of a prayer would be condemned very quickly in many places. Thank GOD we live in a state and region where it is accepted and wanted for children to pray and God is a focus. Also, its not just right here where we should be concerned. Do you think California, New York, and other places allow the things we do? I think NOT!!! Prayer is virtually nonexistant in those places.

Im not for putting an established religion in the schools. Im for the freedom of religion which was taken from them being restored. The right to express it freely. And if you cant see that, then something is seriously wrong. Go to church, wherever it may be.

“Like another person said, race is an issue because your people keep making it one.” – No, it’s people like you and your political party that consistently makes it an issue! When conservative ads telling Latinos NOT to vote are in the airwaves, it’s an issue; when conservatives and Republicans use the “Southern Strategy” in an attempt to surpress the black vote — it’s an issue! This is happening in 2010…nit just 1964!!

“The last presidential contest was all about getting your black president…” — NO! The last Presidential contest was about the choices that were available: one that could get the nation on a different course than the previous Administration!!

“When will you wake up and realize they dont give a rats end about your betterment as black people” Question: when will conservatives realize that we ARE a constituency and CONSIDER us as such…and address the issues that we deem pertinent…rather than just focusing on a limited segment??

“Whites dont need protection? When Im walking down the streeets of ATL with my wife and kids and thugs are on the street and approaching you for everything, protection is needed.” Are you stating that EVERYONE doesn’t need protection from crime….or only white people should be considered as victims???

“When muggings, robbery, and gang activity take place, protection is needed.” That’s in ALL cases…not just yours!!

“When the NAACP makes wild accusations that could result in hate against whites happens, protection is needed.” Are the accusations based in TRUTH…and it’s something that you can’t handle??

“You really need to think before you go and put in an already volatile black young mans head that white conservative tea party is out to get him.” If you’d attended some of the events as I have….and been called a number of prejoratives…and dealt with the racist invectives….the statements speak volumes!!

Juan Williams was fired from NPR for his opinion on Muslims and his perceptions of people who committ terroism. Ever since the American People elected President Obama there seems to be a rise in other terroist groups which are claiming to be Christians such as the home grown terroist group known as the “tea party” who uses the same weapons of choice as the “taliban” which are hatred, fear and rage/mop mentality. I wonder if Juan Williams had been fired if he said the same thing about the home grown terroist known as the “tea party”? Whenever I see these “tea party” extremist, mostly white people (klan, skin heads, etc.), I feel uneasy and watch them very closely. We have a double standard regarding who we label as terroist. The American People are sick and tired of ALL terroist groups whether they are Muslims, Christians or Jews.

No one is saying blacks are the only ones committing crimes…but if you will take the time to look at the statistics, you will see that the MAJORITY of crimes are committed by blacks. Prisons and jails have the higher percentage of black inmates. They rap and sing(?) about murder, rape, drugs, and beating women. They walk around with their pants “sagging”, and you know where that came from. It came from PRISON when you didn’t get a belt to hold up your pants. Quit advertising your thug mentality, and maybe…just maybe…you’ll get the respect you keep demanding from whites.

Howard…All I am saying is quit whining about it and go out and improve your OWN life! The NAACP cannot do that for you.

A great speech from someone who likely is white. However hard to improve life if there is systematic discrimination or if employers discriminate. The NAACP has helped address these problems and why should all americans not speak up and say that RACE, RELIGION, GENDER should NOT have a role in real opportunity. And yes….I know your next cry will be “but..but…affirmative action.” Yes, we have laws to try to rectify some of the disparaties that have occurred but that is because it takes time. We have made some tremendous strides and created a lot of opportunity that is not race based alone. We are not there yet. And affirmative action programs, through all their problems and distorted tales, have as their objective, the removal of race, religion and gender as their objectives.

Oh Please!!!

Thank you for putting this out there. It`s so nice to know that there are rational people left in the world. Until people wake up to the fact that they are being played by both sets D`s and R`s, Progressive v. Conservative “leaders” we are doomed to keep fighting among ourselves while the ones in power continue to do what it takes to stay in power, keeping us distracted with imaginary or exaggerated divisions. I doubt it will happen, but we really need to clean up the real problem first and throw out the “political class” then we can sit down and work out the details. There are real ideological differences that need to be worked out, but those in power are not interested in doing so. Their interest is keeping their power and sharing it and the money with their backers. It would be just like a good family argument at Thanksgiving, it will get heated, and to continue the metaphor, but we`ll all get back at Christmas.
But what do I know. I`m just one of the right wing “clingers”, and I guess it`s going to get a lot worse before it gets any better.

Any claim made that see a small faction of a group and condemns the whole is prejudice and bigoted. A person dislikes a black man, and hence condemns all black men, is a racist, right? It’s a misguided mindset bred of ignorance, pure and simple. The NAACP is doing that exact same thing by calling the Tea Party racist – by seeing a small faction and condemning the whole based on it. That’s the same thing that Joy and Whoopi got so mad about and walked off the set – that a small faction of Muslim extremists do not represent the whole. It’s hypocrisy, it’s dishonest, it’s bigotry, it’s hateful, it’s intellectually void. And folks are pretty damn tired of it.

the tea party is here because republicans and conservatives have been taught that admitting to fault or apologizing are weaknesses so they went out and created a dumber and meaner version of a party that has made many mistakes that have hurt this country just so they won’t have to face the many bad things they have supported because they were easily fooled by the use of children, the flag and God to deceive them. when actually, admitting to fault and apologizing and taking real common sense corrections are most times signs of strength, character and intelligence.
and yes, the other side is imperfect, too.
and still 2 wrongs don’t make a right.
but there is a big difference between being imperfect and dysfunctional.
the most conservatives can do when a problem doesn’t look like it can be swept under the rug is to come out and say ‘i take full responsibility’ and then walk away without doing anything and pretending they’re some kind of stand-up guy.
the tactics of demonize, divide and scapegoat have them unable to see past some sort of political DMZ to be able to take all things into account in order to make the best decisions possible on each issue. it’s like thinking with just the lobe on this side of your brain and never using the other one.
probably get about a 50% success rate with that kind of thinking, 50% success rate, hmmm, sound kind of familiar? kind of like the last 30 years.
the answer is not to create a new political party, the answer is to hold the current one, the one you’ve been backing, accountable. take the anger and energy of the tea party and put it back on the people who are mostly responsible and let them know you mean business and want positive results, not just victories at any cost.
the dems are messed up too, but republicans have done the most harm and have been in control 20 of the last 30 years in our government too, think about it.
there is a huge difference between a disappointing friend and a deadly enemy.

Latinos for Reform ad urges Latinos not to vote
By Jessica Puente – The Daily Caller | Published: 4:33 PM 10/20/2010 | Updated: 4:35 PM 10/20/2010

Latinos for Reform (LFR), a conservative group that advocates for Latino concerns, is airing an ad that discourages Latinos from voting in the upcoming midterm elections.

LFR says in the Spanish version of the ad that there is “no excuse” for the lack of action on immigration reform from the current Congress. It attacks “both Democrats and Republicans,” going as far as to call them “traitors” for “playing with our future.” The ad has both an English and Spanish version, with the key difference between the two versions being that the English version singles out Democrats while the Spanish version targets all politicians as having betrayed Hispanic voters.

Some Latino organizations see the ad as a Republican strategy to help their candidates during the midterm elections.

“It is a very well calculated political move, if you are asking Latinos not to vote and 65% of Latinos vote Democrat then the other party will win,” said Hector Sanchez, executive director for the Labor Council for Latino American Advancement.

In a poll early this month, the Hispanic Pew Center reports 65% of Latino registered voters say they plan to support the Democratic candidate in their local congressional district.

One place the Spanish version of the ad is running is in Nevada, where Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid is locked in tight race against Republican challenger Sharron Angle.

I must disagree with you on this issue. The Tea Party is yet another manifistation of long held views racism and bigotry which continue, inwardly with some, and outwardly expressed by others, all brought together because of their unwillingness to accept Blacks (a Black President in particular) and other minorities as their equals, with equal rights. The NAACP, and all organizations who believe in fairness, are correct, and with good reason to denounce these bigots and racists.

Cynthia, I like your article and you’re absolutely right. This is the wrong battle to wage. But as a journalist you should know that race sells papers and gets you publicity. All I’ve seen from the Tea Party is that they are for fiscal responsibility and against high taxes and wasteful spending. I don’t see anything racist in that. The fact that most of the media and anyone else in the Obama camp has tied all this to being racist, that anyone no matter who you are that opposes one iota of Obama’s policies is a racist, kind of speaks volumes of the accusers doesn’t it?

Yes Cynthia there are a thousand battles that could be waged. Those resources could be used more effectively. But the point of fact is that the black community isn’t being used to support Civil Rights as it is today, but being used for the leftist movement. Notice I don’t say conspiracy. Nobody is getting together in a dark, smoke-filled room to make a deal. It’s just that everybody is on the same page and they’re all working towards the same goal.

Point of fact and some other posters have made the same comment. White America isn’t nearly as racist as you, the media portray us to be. It’s the shock and negativity that’s being used to sell papers, and push an agenda. It is not the truth.

HDB,

What Southern Strategy is supressing black votes? news to me. Black came out in record numbers last election. You telling me something changed.

I never said everyone dont need protection, it was a general statement. Blacks kill more of their own kind anyway. It is really a disgrace. And if you dont believe the “millions” of black votes got Obama elected you are crazy. 96% of blacks voted for him. That was not an informed vote, many had no idea of the issues. If Obama had been the same person in a white body have the numbers would have voted and the black vote would have been 60-65 percent for him.

So you promote the NAACP telling those lies and having innocent white people hurt or even murdered because of those lies? You really mean that?

My you sure do suffer some racial prejudice dont you. On the job, at events. You just cant catch a break! Every white person you come in contact with must be a racist! But you still didnt comment on the statement I made. Young white ment are being made to believe the tea party is racist out and to get him. That is a lie, and YOU know it!
