The odious Glenn Beck has every right to his rally

Glenn Beck is a clever and amoral huckster who inflames and incites the lowest passions of his audience in order to keep them entertained. There is nothing too base for him to say; no lie too odious for him to repeat; no smear too vile for him to include as part of his schtick.
He has called President Obama a racist repeatedly. And he is so ignorant of the civil rights movement that he once claimed that U.S. John Lewis (D-Atlanta) was trying to mimic a civil rights leader. Ahem. John Lewis was a civil rights leader — a rather famous one.
Beck has no appreciation for or understanding of Dr. King’s philosophy, which was based on the theological concept of social justice. As a minister, King preached and lived that philosophy. Beck has denounced the very idea of social justice as a theological concept.
You can understand why some civil rights activists are offended that Beck has chosen to schedule his rally at the Lincoln Memorial for August 28, a date that holds a special place in the hearts of many Americans because Dr. King gave his famous “I Have a Dream” speech on the Washington Mall on that date.
Still, Beck has every right to his rally. Why? He is protected by the very same Bill of Rights he would deny to others.

From the WaPo:

Beck’s “Restoring Honor” rally, with former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin among the scheduled speakers, will take place on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, 47 years to the day after Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech there.

The conservative talk show host announced in November that he wanted to reveal a “100 year plan for America” at the Lincoln Memorial. More recently, he said that the purpose of his Aug. 28 event is to restore the country’s “values” and to pay tribute to military families.

“There will be absolutely no politics involved,” he said. “This rally will honor the troops, unite the American people under the principles of integrity and truth, and make a pledge to restore honor within ourselves and our country.”

Civil rights leaders have denounced Beck’s plans, questioning his motives for choosing the date and place, which they said are historically symbolic of the country’s civil rights movement.

Responding to the criticism on his show June 28, Beck said he believes it was “divine providence” that the rally was scheduled on the anniversary of the King speech. He said he had initially planned the event for Sept. 12 and then realized it was a Sunday. “I’m not going to ask anyone to work on the Sabbath,” he said. He rescheduled the rally for Aug. 28 because it was the best day for the schedules of the people involved, he said.

“It was not my intention to select 8-28 because of the Martin Luther King tie. It is the day he made that speech. I had no idea until I announced it and I walked offstage and my researchers said, New York Times has already just published that this is [the same day as the King speech] — and I said, ‘Oh, jeez.’ “

I don’t believe for one minute that Beck didn’t choose the date intentionally. Of course, he did — to be provocative. And his declaration that the rally won’t be political is a flat-out lie. Sarah Palin is among the speakers. Of course, it will be political.

Demagogues like Beck whip up the passions of a crowd, who then believe they should be able to impose their views on others. But the US Constitution protects the rights of minorities from the inflamed passions of a mob. That same Bill of Rights allows Beck his rally on the mall on any date that the US Park Service gives him a permit.

There is one thing Beck said with which I agree:”. . Whites don’t own Abraham Lincoln. Blacks don’t own Martin Luther King. Humans, humans embrace their ideas or reject their ideas.”

No, black people don’t own MLK. He belongs to America — an America much better because of the life he lived. Beck doesn’t seem to believe in that America, but I don’t believe King would have tried to deny him his rally on Aug. 28.

Have we mentioned that Rachel Maddow is this years winner of the Walter Cronkite Award…..?

That just made that award like the Pulitzer. Not relevant like it use to be. Maddcow is not a reporter but, an opinion entertainer like Beck, Hannity, and Limbaugh. Don’t believe me about the waste of the Pulitzer? Tucker won one once. I rest my case.

the civil right’s movement began and still remains a movement of people from different cultures, creeds, and religions. the movement helped women and minorities have access to a government that once denied women and minorities certain freedoms and rights guaranteed by the constitution. many of the rights you and i both share are a result of movements whether they happened on the lincoln memorial or boston harbor.

FACT: The GOP (and all those in the tea party which IS in fact a division of the gop) continues to be the party of “hate” towards minorities.

I’m glad you brought that up, Saul. We evil, nasty Conservatives have tried for so long to hide our hate. I mean, who wants personal freedom and financial responsibility? I’d much rather have the government take care of all of that for me.

Look, I hear it from liberals all the time. If you don’t support Social Security and health care then you hate old people. If you don’t support spending millions of dollars for failing education then you hate children. You know, for you guys to say that conservatives are the “party of hate,” you guys tend to use the word far more than we do.

Interesting how the conversation moves to “Beck said this or that” “did not” “did so” rather than the point he was making. Or at least I thought he was making, as I noted earlier: that the civil rights movement is being run by those with a progressive political agenda, who seek to use the movement to further those political aims.

Or Ms Tucker’s statement that there is no lie or smear he won’t repeat – even though Mr. Beck has denounced those who question Pres Obama’s place of birth as nuts. Which rather makes her the written equivalent of what she accuses Mr. Beck of doing with his spoken words –

Want to see an exercise in racism. Watch the political documentary ’street fight” about a political election for mayor of Neward between 2 black Dems, one a 66 year old mayor who owns a yacht, a rolls royce, 2 vacation homes, etc. and the other a barack obama type 32 year old black man. Fascinating. The older black man eventually pulled away and won by saying the younger black man associated with Jews, had white support, etc. basically playing the race card. And deriding the young man for his Stanford education(he went there on a football scholly) saying he wasn’t black because he was educated at a school like Stanford. It worked. His appeal to blatant racism worked and the ignorant community he represented re voted him back in despite Newark’s absymal economy. Very sad but it speaks volumes about the urban black voters in this country.

Talk about McCarthy-ism:

Rep. Pelosi calls for investigation of WTC mosque opposition

“House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, California Democrat, called for an investigation of those who are protesting the building of the Ground Zero Mosque on Tuesday. She told San Francisco’s KCBS radio:

“There is no question there is a concerted effort to make this a political issue by some. And I join those who have called for looking into how is this opposition to the mosque being funded,” she said. “How is this being ginned up that here we are talking about Treasure Island, something we’ve been working on for decades, something of great interest to our community as we go forward to an election about the future of our country and two of the first three questions are about a zoning issue in New York City.”

Calls to investigate the funding for those proposing the $100 million “Cordoba House” have fallen on deaf ears, though, as New York’s Mayor Mike Bloomberg has described such an investigation as “un-American.” “

Cynthia won a pulitzer. That right there tells you the award is politicized. Just like the Nobel peace award which was given to Obama who had done absolutely zero to deserve it. It was given to him for what he “might” accomplish which in the view of socialists is to appease Islam, appease the moochers, and destroy capitalism which has lifted more economic boats than socialism ever will. Its a shame that these awards have become political and lost all credibility.

WAR,

If the purpose of the class had been to do as you suggest, then that is to be expected but this class had nothing whatsoever in the syllabus to suggest such an assignment nor did the assignment do anything to enrich the students relative to the intended course description. Finally, there was no balance via assignments that provided a counter-point to Beck’s bias. However, we were definitely enlightened, just not enriched. By the way, did you entitle your class so that students could readily identify your intent with the course. For example, “RightWingnut Rhetoric 101.”

Rachel Maddow’s had her share of gaffes. Claimed there wasn’t a Preamble to the Constitution. She said the union card-check vote was actually about preserving a secret ballot and ridiculed Rep Bohner for saying it took away the secret ballot from union elections.

All these talking head political entertainers make mistakes. No big deal. But this “ooooh, he said this and she said that” gets pretty silly.

One thing I have noticed: shows like those on MSNBC spend an inordinate amount of time ridiculing the ratings leaders on other cable stations. The ratings leaders rarely give their progressive counterparts much notice.

Kinda pathetic, really.

The constitution says we have the right to religious freedom in this country and me being a racist Mormon and all. It only makes sense that the muslims have a voice just like me. Now as for all those wives I have, they don’t mind that I sleep with a different one every night and produce bride children for other old men in those communes we’ve built.
