The odious Glenn Beck has every right to his rally

Glenn Beck is a clever and amoral huckster who inflames and incites the lowest passions of his audience in order to keep them entertained. There is nothing too base for him to say; no lie too odious for him to repeat; no smear too vile for him to include as part of his schtick.
He has called President Obama a racist repeatedly. And he is so ignorant of the civil rights movement that he once claimed that U.S. John Lewis (D-Atlanta) was trying to mimic a civil rights leader. Ahem. John Lewis was a civil rights leader — a rather famous one.
Beck has no appreciation for or understanding of Dr. King’s philosophy, which was based on the theological concept of social justice. As a minister, King preached and lived that philosophy. Beck has denounced the very idea of social justice as a theological concept.
You can understand why some civil rights activists are offended that Beck has chosen to schedule his rally at the Lincoln Memorial for August 28, a date that holds a special place in the hearts of many Americans because Dr. King gave his famous “I Have a Dream” speech on the Washington Mall on that date.
Still, Beck has every right to his rally. Why? He is protected by the very same Bill of Rights he would deny to others.

From the WaPo:

Beck’s “Restoring Honor” rally, with former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin among the scheduled speakers, will take place on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, 47 years to the day after Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech there.

The conservative talk show host announced in November that he wanted to reveal a “100 year plan for America” at the Lincoln Memorial. More recently, he said that the purpose of his Aug. 28 event is to restore the country’s “values” and to pay tribute to military families.

“There will be absolutely no politics involved,” he said. “This rally will honor the troops, unite the American people under the principles of integrity and truth, and make a pledge to restore honor within ourselves and our country.”

Civil rights leaders have denounced Beck’s plans, questioning his motives for choosing the date and place, which they said are historically symbolic of the country’s civil rights movement.

Responding to the criticism on his show June 28, Beck said he believes it was “divine providence” that the rally was scheduled on the anniversary of the King speech. He said he had initially planned the event for Sept. 12 and then realized it was a Sunday. “I’m not going to ask anyone to work on the Sabbath,” he said. He rescheduled the rally for Aug. 28 because it was the best day for the schedules of the people involved, he said.

“It was not my intention to select 8-28 because of the Martin Luther King tie. It is the day he made that speech. I had no idea until I announced it and I walked offstage and my researchers said, New York Times has already just published that this is [the same day as the King speech] — and I said, ‘Oh, jeez.’ “

I don’t believe for one minute that Beck didn’t choose the date intentionally. Of course, he did — to be provocative. And his declaration that the rally won’t be political is a flat-out lie. Sarah Palin is among the speakers. Of course, it will be political.

Demagogues like Beck whip up the passions of a crowd, who then believe they should be able to impose their views on others. But the US Constitution protects the rights of minorities from the inflamed passions of a mob. That same Bill of Rights allows Beck his rally on the mall on any date that the US Park Service gives him a permit.

There is one thing Beck said with which I agree:”. . Whites don’t own Abraham Lincoln. Blacks don’t own Martin Luther King. Humans, humans embrace their ideas or reject their ideas.”

No, black people don’t own MLK. He belongs to America — an America much better because of the life he lived. Beck doesn’t seem to believe in that America, but I don’t believe King would have tried to deny him his rally on Aug. 28.

Let’s see. Ms. Tucker is against Beck speaking on “August 28, a date that holds a special place in the hearts of many Americans because Dr. King…” but she does support the Mosque being built close to ground zero even though many victims’ families consider that a slap in the face.

Also, check out John Lewis commercial supporting John Eaves. Whipping up the fear mongering of the Atlanta residents that North Fulton residents were going to turn the water hoses on them & let the dogs loose after them. Everything that is always mentioned about John Lewis is “that he was a good leader…”; “he was…”; “he was…”. John Lewis is nothing more than a has been.

And neither do A LOT of people in this nation. Dr. King is probably rolling over in his grave at the way blacks and whites act these days.

Yet you don’t think the Muslim’s picking a spot 2 blocks from Ground Zero isn’t provocative? Just sayin….

Can’t agree with you more Ms. Tucker about GB’s right to hold his rally, but I doubt he is as evil as you portray him.

How many that are up in arms about the Muslim’s rights to build their what-ever-it-is near ground zero are going to have their panties all in a wad over GB speaking at the Lincoln Memorial on such a holy day?

Cynthia,

With all the name-calling that you do; with all the unanswered questions; with all the illogical statements; with all the gratuitous blaming of the GOP; with all of the knee-jerk shilling for the Democrat party, for “the poor” for unions or for the hungry (oh, excuse me, “obese”) lower economic strata in this country, frankly we need Glenn Beck.

You see, the same people who are fooled by your shrill nonsense will by their lack of thoughtfulness also be fooled by Beck’s. If the people who can not understand rational arguments of say, Thomas Sowell or Jonah Goldberg, then they aren’t reachable by reasonable people, which excludes you, I’m sad to say.

I have heard Bill Press slam this and he’s wrong, as is Greta Van Susteran who also thinks Glen’s rally should be moved to another location. Seems it’s another one of those “sensitivity” things, a disgusting pig like Beck at the Lincoln memorial sets many a nerve on edge.

If his permit finally comes through (and it most likely will) it will be interesting entertainment.

In light of Jesse Jackson’s latest article I changed the start of Ms. Tucker’s article to this:

Jesse Jackson is a clever and amoral huckster who inflames and incites the lowest passions of his audience in order to keep them entertained. There is nothing too base for him to say; no lie too odious for him to repeat; no smear too vile for him to include as part of his schtick.

It is amazing to me that she can claim that Beck is a huckster and lies. Point out the lies with facts please. You can’t do it can you? As for the Jesse article I could point out lie after lie. Jesse Jackson lived a lie as a supposed Reverend while impregnating his girlfriend.

Take the speck out of your own eye before pointing out the speck in others. Cynthia if you wanted to advance the dialogue you would have taken Jesse to task for his histrionics the last 20 years instead of lying about Beck and demeaning him. You attack but can’t back up anything. That is the sign of desperation.

I entertain no delusions that Glenn Beck has any passions of his own or has any ideals in which he truly believes. He’s a husckster getting rich by way of hot-headed followers who need someone else to give them words to justify anger and discontent. No one will ever be able to say that America is a better place because of his contributions…it may be changed because of the devisive, hateful way in which he has whipped idiots into frenzy…but it will certainly NOT be a better place. Glenn points his finger and says, “blame him, blame them”. Martin made us think and look into and at ourselves…the only way humans can change for the better.

Given your cynical sniping at the GOP for the ground zero mosque, your criticism here seems hollow and entirely “astroturf”, contrived or fake. One might accuse you of playing on people’s fears, making weak political points for political purposes to incite hatred, invoke emotional responses or incite divisiveness.

Could you for once this week write a column which informs, instead of just accusing racism or intolerance? I don’t think you can. You’re in “the groove”.

I rather doubt that Ms. Tucker has ever watched an entire Glenn beck show. Yes watching his show is much like watching “Mad Money”, like Jim Crammer he gets very antimated. While I don’t agree with all he says, I do listen and actually THINK about what he said, something I very seriously doubt that Ms. Tuker does.
Last night watching mainstream news I learned that I was a bigoted racist because I like the vast majority of Americans do not want the mosque built in that particular location. No one denies their right to build a mosque, or worship as they please it’s the offensive location that is the issue.

Beck is entitled to his opinion and interpretation of the civil rights movement. Because he is white does not negate his understanding any more than a person of color. Perhaps when (according to CT) he claimed that U.S. John Lewis (D-Atlanta) was trying to mimic a civil rights leader, Glenn didn’t mean his role during the civil rights movement but rather he meant in today’s environment which as you know is quite different than during the “movement”. Beck has a red telephone on his desk with a telephone number that he has given to the White House. He has repeatedly said on his show that if he tells a lie, they are free to call him and challenge his stand on any issue. The telephone has not rung once in the history of his show. And don’t tell me that someone from the Demos don’t watch his show every day to keep up with his revelations. Questions for you Beck haters. Per MiltonMan – Let’s see. Ms. Tucker is against Beck speaking on “August 28, a date that holds a special place in the hearts of many Americans because Dr. King…” but she does support the Mosque being built close to ground zero even though many victims’ families consider that a slap in the face.

Ms Tucker does not indicate she is against speaking on that date, don’t put words in her mouth. She merely claims some activists are offended. In the next sentence she fully acknowledges Beck’s right to speak on this date, however. That’s the difference between this and the mosque. Critics of the mosque state their opposition, yet refuse to acknowledge the right to build the mosque.

Oh – and Ms Tucker has never stated her support for the mosque, merely her support for their right to build it.
