The GOP’s new McCarthyism against Muslims

What has happened to the leadership of the Republican Party? Are there no longer any statesmen/women in the GOP? Does the party have any leading figures who believe in the Bill of Rights?
The GOP’s leadership has been taken over by a group of shrill demagogues who cozy up to birthers, talk of rescinding the 14th amendment and want to deny peaceful American Muslims the right to practice their religion. In terms of decency and principle, this season may mark the lowest ebb for the Republican Party since the McCarthy era of the 1950s.
There is no divisive issue the party won’t exploit, no wedge it won’t use as it seeks votes and tries to separate the unum into pluribus. If you listen to Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas), head of the Republican Senate Campaign Committee, gleefully talk about exploiting the emotions surrounding the so-called 9/11 mosque in New York, you can see how low the party’s leadership has sunk.
There is no good reason for a mosque in NYC to concern the vast majority of Americans — especially nine years after the Sept. 11 atrocities. But Cornyn can’t wait to continue the shameful harangues against Islam.
Newt Gingrich — who won’t be out-demagogued by Sarah Palin or anyone else — has gone so far as to compare the Cordoba Initiative to Nazis.
Rick Scott, trying to win the GOP primary for governor of Florida, has an ad attacking President Obama for supporting the Cordoba Initiative’s right to build a mosque two blocks from the site of the World Trade Center. What in the world does that issue have to do with being Florida’s governor?
A few Republicans have called on the leaders of the party to stop the shameful attacks on the Cordoba Initiative. Mark McKinnon, former adviser to George W. Bush, praised Obama and criticized the leaders of his party, pointing out that they are “reinforcing al-Qaida.” But McKinnon is little known and not among the party’s elected leaders:

From the standpoint of political strategy, the most interesting thing about the GOP’s anti-Muslim bigotry is this: It betrays a lack of answers to the nation’s pressing problems. For more that a year, Republicans in the House and the Senate have been predicting big gains in the mid-term elections, as they pointed to Democratic votes they claimed most citizens rejected: stimulus, health care, Wall Street reform.
If those votes are so unpopular and pave the way for GOP success in the mid-terms, why do they feel the need to whip up anti-Muslim hostility?

Great questions. This is the single most irresponsible example of wedge-issue politics I’ve witnessed from the right in America that I can recall. I think the answer lies somewhere in the nature of modern right-wing ideology; they never know when to stop piling on, and the utter lack of self-moderation ultimately defeats them, time and time again.

The Muslims have the right to build it anywhere they like, but why stir up a hornet’s nest to prove a point? As for the GOP pushing this agenda, just like the Democrats or any other politician, they will do what is necessary to get elected and please the masses.

Why have you yet to comment on the DOJ finding Anthony Gonzalez and Bush innocent of ALL wrong doing? They have also now clear Tom Delay. Why are you silence? Why will you not comment on your gutless Democrat brethren simply accusing these fine Americans of crimes since they know, as well you do, they cannot compete with them in the arena ideas? Thoughts???

The Muslims should be allowed to build it there – but quit beating around the bush as to why it is being built there. It’s not sacred ground for them…or is it? If it is, the reason it is would be quite upsetting to non-Muslims. Yes it is true, they like to build monuments to conquests. Then again, I am not willing to concede my nation to Sharia law, so bring it on!

Meanwhile, the same freedom that allows them to build a mosque there, should also afford any BBQ vendor or strip joint to go in next door. But what would the Muslim response be if something like that went in next door? They certainly won’t be crying “freedom” then!

The GOP puts new batteries in their culture warriorbots about 6 months before every election.

If they can make Americans hate Muslims, maybe just maybe, they’ll forget that the GOP drove this country into the ground.

When a religion has at its core dominating and taking over the world, the so-called peaceful Muslims are either fooling us or themselves. The Left seems to be more easily fooled on this. There is no doubt the Muslim faith provides an incumbator for radicals/terrorists. The faith should turn their energies to cleaning their ranks. Obama throwing his hat into the debate only reenforces the beliefs that he is at heart not an American, but a Muslim. How stupid.

CT- As usual don’t bother digging into the facts as it may disrupt your little blog. 2008 Form 990 for the Cordoba Initiative “0″ revenue and 2,767 of expenses. Incredible- I think I will call Kasim today and suggest I will build an interfaith community center at a $100 million cost and claim racism if I am forced to do any financial disclosure. Do you realize that you couldn’t get a construction loan on a 200k home with those financials? Gosh forbid we ask for a little disclosure without being “anti Muslim”. This country needs a strong leader- inshallah

Would it be morally right to build a YMCA a couple of blocks away from the Murrah Building, say, in 2005 or so, ten years after Christians conspired to murder women and children with a truck bomb there?

Don’t assume me to be ignorant – I know darn well that this is NYC, and everything and anything conceivable is there!

They still have every right to build it there, and I wouldn’t dare say otherwise. What I still fail to understand, is if American Muslims truly want peace, truly want to show that they love this country, why not more sensitivity on their part? If it’s just a piece of land, then it really does not matter, then move it to a less controversial place. If it’s more than just a piece of land, we deserve to know why. Just sayin…

Kinda reminds one of the civil rights era when the Yankee was instructing the southern US on how to behave then when de-segregation hit the Yankee States there had to be police escorts and the tolerant, loving, caring Yankee was tossing bananas at school buses loaded with little black kids. Would anyone have given a good crap if it had been? That is the point, and it’s a perfectly legitimate one, because it addresses precisely the same issue the TeaTards are trying to make about Manhattan.

And this notion that anything south of, I dunno, Canal Street is somehow now “hallowed ground” is simultaneously disgusting and hilarious if you’ve ever so much as set foot in NYC. Which I sorta doubt most of the righties posting here actually have.

(I lived in that metro area several decades, still love NYC, and can only fathom how metro Atlantans would feel about New Yorkers telling them what kind of community centers they can build and where.)
