Russian government sees harsh evidence of global warming

While the U.S. remains embroiled in a mind-boggling feud over whether climate change is real, Russia has warmed up to the scientific evidence. “Everyone is talking about climate change now,” President Dmitri A. Medvedev told the Russian Security Council this month. “Unfortunately, what is happening now in our central regions is evidence of this global climate change, because we have never in our history faced such weather conditions in the past.”

Russia’s leaders have usually played the role of obstructionists in global talks about climate change because they thought that combatting it would harm their economic growth (where have we heard that before?) and because they believed that they would benefit from a warming planet. The vast stretch of frozen-over Siberia, they believed, would turn into a pleasant region of moderate temperature, ripe for agriculture and development.
But this summer changed their minds. The costs of climate change have been horrendous. Russia has suffered a devastating drought, and they’re still struggling to put out wildfires. From McClatchy:

Russia’s heat wave, along with its disastrous fallout, finally may have persuaded the Kremlin to combat climate change.

Russian officials, who until now have resisted dramatic action out of fears it would dampen economic growth, lately have issued strong statements linking global warming to the emergency Russia is facing. Some hope the abrupt change of tune will result in more effective environmental policies, even after the smog dies down.

“There is no question that we need to get ahead of climate change,” said Vladimir Slivyak, a co-chair of Ecodefense, a grassroots Russian environmental group. “This is a wake-up call.”

The crisis, which seems to have taken the Kremlin by surprise, features a fierce and unremitting heat wave that’s now well into its second month, a drought that’s ruined as much as a third of the vitally important grain crop and a wave of seemingly uncontrollable wildfires that have blanketed half of European Russia, including the capital Moscow, in a cloud of smoke.

Russia’s state meteorological service said smog conditions in Moscow have eased from a Saturday peak, but the Ministry of Emergency Services warned that Moscow-region fires have tripled size in the past week, spreading from 65 to 210 hectares. Meanwhile, an average of 700 people are dying per day in Moscow, double the average rate, which health officials blamed on the smog.

“Our country has not experienced such a heat wave in the last 50 or even 100 years,” Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said last week in a speech published in English on the Kremlin’s website. “We need to learn our lessons from what has happened, and from the unprecedented heat wave that we have faced this summer.

Russia isn’t the only place where the extremes caused by climate change are in evidence. Yesterday, The New York Times offered a round-up:

The summer’s heat waves baked the eastern United States, parts of Africa and eastern Asia, and above all Russia, which lost millions of acres of wheat and thousands of lives in a drought worse than any other in the historical record.

Seemingly disconnected, these far-flung disasters are reviving the question of whether global warming is causing more weather extremes.

The collective answer of the scientific community can be boiled down to a single word: probably.

“The climate is changing,” said Jay Lawrimore, chief of climate analysis at the National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, N.C. “Extreme events are occurring with greater frequency, and in many cases with greater intensity.”

He described excessive heat, in particular, as “consistent with our understanding of how the climate responds to increasing greenhouse gases.”

Theory suggests that a world warming up because of those gases will feature heavier rainstorms in summer, bigger snowstorms in winter, more intense droughts in at least some places and more record-breaking heat waves. Scientists and government reports say the statistical evidence shows that much of this is starting to happen.

Here in metropolitan D.C., in addition to a searing heat wave, we’ve enduring a summer of violent, freakish thunder storms that have downed trees, caused flooding and cost lives.

Do scientists have absolute proof the freakish weather has been caused by climate change? No. Does that theory best fit the facts? Yes.

The only Global Warming/Climate Change going on around here is the meltdown mode that the DemoRats are going through. Let’s see it was first called global warming – that did not work. Now it is called Climate Change. First they were called Liberals now they are called Progressives. Granny has a link that does not work! Funny stuff.

Ms. Tucker we are anxious to see your opinion on the Democrats in New Hampshire who went on record stating that they wished Palin was in the plane crash & not Ted Stevens. Thoughts?

“Global warming, ironically, can actually increase the amount of snow you get,” said Kevin Trenberth, head of climate analysis at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo. “But it also means the snow season is shorter.” -New York Times

If the planet warms enough I guess we will freeze to death, but we can go out skiing.

XIAOXI, China AP – The hydroelectric dam, a low wall of concrete slicing across an old farming valley, is supposed to help a power company in distant Germany contribute to saving the climate — while putting lucrative “carbon credits” into the pockets of Chinese developers.

But in the end the new Xiaoxi dam may do nothing to lower global-warming emissions as advertised. And many of the 7,500 people displaced by the project still seethe over losing their homes and farmland.

“Nobody asked if we wanted to move,” said a 38-year-old man whose family lost a small brick house. “The government just posted a notice that said, ‘Your home will be demolished.’”

The dam will shortchange German consumers, Chinese villagers and the climate itself, if critics are right. And Xiaoxi is not alone.

The BP oil disaster of 2010, where the scientists declared that this would have an affect on all the Gulf Coast beaches for years to come? Did we have a problem…Yes…but: “Obama goes for a swim.”

JohnnyReb, you know, you’re kinda playing right into the hands of the “wealth redistribution” boogey-man. The “stop Climate Change warriors” are not looking to “redistribute” wealth. They’re simply being capitalists. they believe they have made a better mousetrap, so it is in their interests to take their “idea” to market. it’s not “wealth” until it comes to rest in their coffers. I know this may be tough for you to grasp, but in many ways it is not different than Big Oil or Big Energy telling us we need cars, air conditioning and computers (accepted these things make our lives easier – but so would not being dead). So, Big Oil/Big Energy has their ‘experts’ and ‘Big Green’ has theirs. You know (everybody), by Nature (caps intended), Life (caps intended) creates “problems”. I think the “problem” most (on the left and the right) have with the “fighting climate change as policy” is the fact that a handful of “leaders” are suggesting THEY ALONE can fix this, or their solution is “best”. Again, feel free to replace “climate change” with Communism (Cold War), “war on terrorism/homeland security” or even LBJ’s “war on poverty/Great Society”. all these things (Communism, terrorism, poverty, and yes climate change) are very real (and very man-made). the issue as a neo-Carlinist sees it, is; if these things are “man made” what man in his (excuse gender reference, Granny and CT) right mind would think any many (especially a politician or globalist) can offer a “sustainable” solution. It’s like a dairy farmer asking cows how to resolve the manure issue? Does anyone hear think Al Gore, ExxonMobil, or the President of Russian is going to figure out how to stop cows from sh**ing?

My best guess is that Al Gore foresaw the threat of a resurgent Russia and emergent China. He knew that military confrontation would be too expensive, and too risky in terms of conflict escalating to a nuclear conflagration. So, what did he do? He started by relying on the intransigence and obstinacy of the US conservative mind. He broadcast the findings of climate scientists, man’s influence on the climate changes, and warned about the consequences of following the path we were on. Just as Mr Gore predicted, the rightwingers instantly were provoked into a knee jerk reaction in opposition to whatever it was he had said (not that they even understood any of it, but if it came from Al Gore, it had to be wrong. If he had declared that the American flag was red, white and blue, Republicans would be sponsoring Constitutional amendments right now declaring the US flag was and had always been green, yellow and orange, but I digress). So, true to form, Republicans, Conservatives, Libertarians, teatards, or whatever they are calling themselves these days did exactly the opposite of what was needed to combat climate change. They opposed every common sense measure proposed to decrease human contributions to climate change, tried to undo longstanding policy already in place, etc. all the while firmly ignoring all evidence that there was any problem at all.

Fast forward 10 years, and Russia is having massive environmental problems, as are the Chinese, most likely due to man made climate change. Al Gore’s plan is coming to fruition. In another 10 years, the rightwingers will still be unknowingly doing Al Gore’s bidding, and Russia and China will be overwhelmed by new and sundry climate caused disasters. The US and Europe will of course be affected as well, but Mr Gore, (as I do) has faith that American ingenuity will be able to overcome these as they appear.

The final phase of the master plan will happen when Russia and China have collapsed under the weight of domestic disasters. Al Gore will make another movie saying that the world is suffering from human caused global cooling, and that we need to burn more fossil fuels, cut down all trees,, and pollute the air and waters as quickly as possible. Our stalwart right-wingers will rise to the challenge and do exactly the opposite, becoming an unstoppable force for environmentalism, and thereby save the world from destruction.

Should we lower taxes on energy used on the West Coast?

Should we encourage residents of San Diego to up their oil consumption, lest their oceans freeze over?

“Climatology” is a pseudo-science financed by oil companies (who would actually see increased profits if oil and other energies were taxed at a higher rate)…real scientists see that the sun has flared up and cooled down hundreds of times.

Granny Godzilla….if you are really a “granny”, then you are close to my age….remember all the screaming from the left between 1978 and 1981 that we were in globing cooling? All the press, Democrats, etc. were screaming at the conservatives that we were crazy and the world was going into an ice age….man, you people need a life. The next “disaster” we have, why dont you do some damn research? Do you remember Mt Pinatubo near Clark Air Base in the Phillipines? it blew up with the force of several hundred hydrogen bombs. If you and I had discussed what would have happened if this had been a military exercise, you would have been CONVINCED that the Earth couldn’t stand this force. Same for Mt St Helens. Oil in the gulf is bad, and no one wants that. But we had a little thing called WW 2 that you liberals forget or refuse to acknowledge. The amount of bunker fuel (oil for ships in those days), diesel, high octane fighter fuel, bombs, guns, tanks, etc that were sunk were in the HUNDREDS of MILLIONS of gallons, primarily from the convey routes. (Florida to NY, to Newfoundland, to Scotland) Where the hell is all that now, granny? The only place in the world that I know of is at the Pearl Harbor memorial, because it is KEPT as a memorial. There is global warming, client change, etc. And its natural. Deal with it. We have done more damage to this planet with two world wars that all the other junk you can dream up. The cons here should be over in the former Soviet Union just scarfing up land on the cheap because they know that once winter sits in and the globe starts cooling back off, they’ll be able to turn a huge profit. Don’t pass up this opportunity of a lifetime, cons. I’ve already invested in the trickle-down philosophy and purchased land up in the mountains. Now it’s your turn to buy up all that lowland in places like Louisiana and Kingston, Tennessee and select locations in Alabama, for starters, where Monsanto went to all the trouble to pre-condition the land with the highest quality PCBs. That stuff strips the skin off a fish in seconds. It just slides right of. And the mercury in the fish helps to improve your metabolism. What a deal.

The right tends to prefer the common man in leadership roles. They like someone to whom they are or at least appear to be superior. Thus their admiration for the likes of Reagan who was showing signs of alzheimers years before he left office, and Bush who was showing signs of stupidity during grade school. They deeply dislike and distrust those who are obviously more intelligent and superior than them in most every way. Thus their current spell of hatred directed at the president. Same thing with Clinton and Carter. Intelligence is a dreaded demon on the right!

Nope.

The phrase “climate change” was coined by propagandist and spinmeister extraordinaire Frank Luntz.
