Obama squandered his Oval Office moment

Obama could have called for a “moon shot” tonight to make a transition from fossil fuels to cleaner energy, and he failed to do that. He made his first-ever speech in the Oval Office, and he had all three networks at the 8 p.m. slot, and he didn’t make good use of it.

The speech was flat and uninspiring. He recited a litany of the things the administration has done to try to bring the spill under control, but it was a rehash of things the public has already heard. Yes, he’s going to make BP pay. That’s good — as far as it goes. But he didn’t use the moment to assert a resolute sense of command.

Nor did he use it to call on Americans to make the sacrifices that will be necessary to make the transition from petroleum to cleaner fuels. Yes, he said a little about it. But he didn’t even endorse the energy bill currently languishing in the Senate.

The president has wasted a crisis.

Why all of a sudden are these conservatives/repubs so concerned about how people in the gulf will make money and support their families? For years they have been denigrating (sp) welfare recipients and people that collect unemployment compensation as lazy and not wanting to work. So by their logic people in the gulf should find other work to do or they should move to another part of the country to get work. I’ll ask once more, whats the big concern for the lives of the people in the gulf?

What plan as the Republicans come up with to clean up the Gulf? Hello, hello is anyone home. Pure silence. It is funny when Bush and Clinton was running for office no one ask black folks who they were voting for. But when Barak runs for office they wanted to know and accused us for voting for him because he was black no more than whites voting for McCain because he is white. No one said a word when white people was in the news and said they were not voting for him because he was black. Now they what black folks to explain why we voted for Barak. No one said a word about PUMA that was formed because their white shero female Hilary Clinton lost against Barak.

Black folks really want white folks to explain to us why you will vote for Palin in spite of her seeing Russia from her house. All the Republicans are doing is complaining and coming up with any real solutions. They are campaigning for 2012 instead of working. how long will it take for you guys to see what is going on. Swede: OK, I’ll give you the facts you asked for. BP drilling in International waters off our coast. Very risky operation. Neither BP nor US Federal Government had anything even closely resembling an effective risk management and disaster response plan. Gross neglect and mismanagement by BP, TransOcean, UN, and US Federal Government.

Obama’s proposed solution: Further empower (via cap and trade and alternative energy programs) the US Government and BP (set to reap windfall profits from the proposed change in US energy policy and cap-and-trade). Further empower the very institutions that failed us BIG TIME.

Fact: American public is STUPID! Wake up!

Cynthia,

It’s hard, even for a great speaker, to display a sense of command when you have no idea what to do. Let’s all be thankful this is an environmental crisis and not a national security crisis. Time for the president to stop campaigning and time for him to start governing.

They had ideas and they made them to the democrats. I am sorry the lame stream media did not tell YOU but it did not support their decision to lie in bed with Obama. I am not Amvet or HDB with screens of downloaded information for you to read. However, if you can find a moment in your busy day to google republican ideas for the obama healthcare plan, you will find the answers that have eluded you for the past 18 months.

If they scream “socialism” when the president is not even close to it, Cynthia, can you imagine what they would be screaming if he had done what you said?

We have a very good starting point with last night’s speech. And as he told us, this will be ongoing to fine tune as needed – the perfect way to put together a very difficult and decades-needed policy that both garners public support AND WORKS!

Actually, there have been many practical suggestions and even proven, simple technologies offered to control the oil before it reached shore. The Obama Administration–apparently feeling far to bright to accept advice or equipment capable of dealing with the oil–simply ignored it for far too long before shifting to searching for scapegoats.

It only makes sense if you claim that republicans had ideas do say what those ideas were. As far as healthcare, they have made over 200+ amendments in the healthcare bill. That is republican input.

And as far as the public having opinions on what works; why are they directing that towards the government, it’s not the USA’s oil spill, it’s BP’s. They should be telling them.

I was hopeful for change, and feel disappointed that it came, but not for the better. I supported President Obama financially and among friends who wanted to talk politics during the primaries. I believe President Obama will be a one term president.

I hope that candidates for office begin to emerge who will offer solutions to our problems. I hope those candidates can bring unity to our nation while presenting fresh ideas. I am not interested in divisive politics like Newt Gingrich and the tea baggers attach to their messages. I am not interested in people who are recycled like Roy Barnes either. FRESH leadership is needed with management experience. Leadership needs to be genuine. Give me Mitt Romney or Ted Kennedy anyday. Ideas to consider with no self-interest attached.

Heh, yes, Obama is the crisis, but the spill obviously has nothing to do with him. I’m no Obama supporter, am a strict fiscal conservative, but I hate when people on the opposing side jump all over my favorites anytime they get a chance, so I refuse to do that when a flaming lib is in office. BP is a private company, it is up to them to take care of this and pay for all the consequences. The US gov needs to put pressure on BP to get this resolved, which they have done. BP is trying, but they simply don’t know what to do and neither does anyone else. Blaming Obama is plain stupid.

Monica – I agree that blaming Obama for not being able to stop the leak is stupid, but he can still be blamed for the cleanup effort and for the leak happening in the first place. After all, he (and his administration) is in charge of the department that regulates and monitors drilling. He is either at fault for allowing lax regulations or at fault for not regulating.

It’s no secret that President Bail Out’s resume consists of just four words: No experience, no clue. But Bush-fatigued voters, egged on by a suddenly stricken deaf, dumb, & blind news media put into the office of President of the US a failed -FAILED- community organizer whose only demonstrated talent is for the glib, well-performed delivery of a ghost-written public address, and now we are shocked – shocked! – that our champion , not only is neither a commander, nor a chief – he is not even NOT-BUSH. Somewhere in the Twilight Zone the spirit of Rod Serling surely must be screaming, “They have stolen MY SCRIPT!”

PS. For those who might not fully grasp BHO’s failure as a “community organizer”, I suggest you check the Chicago news media reports of how dangerous it is for children in BHO’s home district to attempt a venture so bold as a daily walk to or from school. The USA & the whole world have been Obamboozled by this impostor whose next effort (hinted in last night’s Oval Office address) will be to impose a breathing tax on everyone who dares exhale CO2.

The surprise would have been had the “Saviour” In Chief done anything else. He is too busy focused on how to bankrupt BP and leverage the current situation to further his agenda. – if the solution to our energy future were available right here, right now, it will take decades to fully integrate into society for the benefits to be fully realized. What are we supposed to do until then? We need to drill here, drill now. Environmentalist forced drilling into the deeper waters raising the risks. Clinton’s administration encouraged deep water drilling by removing constraints European countries place on deep water drilling (if implemented, current situation wouldn’t exist). Not using situation to his advantage? Why would Obama insist BP will cover ALL expenses resulting from this disaster yet Congress is already pushing a $20 billion “relief/bailout” plan for the same purpose?

Obama has no issues with tens of thousands of illegals crossing our borders without documentation, but refuses immediate offers of help from Britain due to improper paperwork? A company in Maine has offered delivery of 100,000 feet of booming daily to assist in the cleanup, yet Obama has not taken them up on it. There are many other examples of the President playing this situation to his benefit and not for actually addressing the situation.

I Report/You Decide: I copied this off another blog the other day. Here is a pretty good definition of a “classic conservative” these days:

O’Reilly is a classic conservative, immature, insecure and fearful of just about everything. I’m scared of terrorists so let’s destroy our economy and constitutional rights; I’m scared of boogey men so let’s all carry guns; I’m scared of dying so let’s pretend there’s a benevolent super-being waiting for us in the clouds; I’m scared of free thoughts, socialism, communism, liberalism, higher education, homosexuals, immigrants, etc. They attack their scary fears like small children, first with crying and screaming, then irrational anger and hatred, finally finding themselves alone and quivering – wondering what horrible malady will befall them next. They can’t stand on their own, speak with intelligence and insight on any subject, present a cogent argument or apparently read more than one book. Such a very sad existence that so many seem unable to overcome, perhaps because they coddle each other and cling to their prejudices that bind them together. These massive insecurities are easily preyed upon by corporate influences driving our national policies while playing to their fears, like taking candy from a baby – almost literally.
