Obama squandered his Oval Office moment

Obama could have called for a “moon shot” tonight to make a transition from fossil fuels to cleaner energy, and he failed to do that. He made his first-ever speech in the Oval Office, and he had all three networks at the 8 p.m. slot, and he didn’t make good use of it.

The speech was flat and uninspiring. He recited a litany of the things the administration has done to try to bring the spill under control, but it was a rehash of things the public has already heard. Yes, he’s going to make BP pay. That’s good — as far as it goes. But he didn’t use the moment to assert a resolute sense of command.

Nor did he use it to call on Americans to make the sacrifices that will be necessary to make the transition from petroleum to cleaner fuels. Yes, he said a little about it. But he didn’t even endorse the energy bill currently languishing in the Senate.

The president has wasted a crisis.

I never said that you couldn’t think for yourself, Sharptongue. I merely stated that the media has been deriding the tea party from the start.

Conversely, I know way too many people who told me they voted for Obama, and when I asked why, seeking a political reason, I was told they were voting for him because he was black. I heard this from more whites than blacks. I’m not trying to call anyone racist. I’m just saying that all these Dem/Liberal types that keep calling for a post-racial society are usually the first to bring up a person’s skin color.

Then again, I’m a white protestant male from the south, so you obviously know that I’m a racist, sexist bigot, just because. See, you don’t even have to get to know me…

I support President Obama 100% and I think he gave an inspiring and informative speech.
I look forward to the Obama administration taking over BP profits to distribute to the business
owners and residents on the Gulf who have been affected by this massive oil spill.

The Black Panther Party and the Black Muslims are the equivalent of the KKK.
When did the panthers or muslims, rape, pillage, and lynch white people like the KKK? When did they ride around in packs with sheets on and burn a cross in some white persons yard. When did they lynch a white and go unpunished?

Stop trying to find a balance for your sick relatives.

The Tea Party is about saving ALL of our rights NOT just WHITE people. If they were they would be called the NAAWP. Please get over it. WHAT RIGHTS ARE THEY TRYING TO SAVE? BUSH TOOK MOST OF THOSE RIGHTS AWAY WITH THE PATRIOT ACT, YET YOU WERE SILENT THEN. tHE TEA PARTY HAS SIGNS ABOUT WITCH DOCTORS AND CALING THE PRESIDENT A KENYAN, HOW DOES THAT RHETORIC SAVE A RIGHT?

I mean it only makes sense. It’s called logical reasoning. If Carter is responsible for 9/11 based offf your facts of him stripping the CIA. Then the people after him are indirectly responsible since they didn’t restore the CIA’s power. That’s based off your reasoning for blaming it on Carter.

In just skimming the first page, the only worthwile response was MajorPayne who has been down on the Gulf Coast.

This illustrates that you can’t put a person in a job as immense as the Presidency and who had no executive experience prior to his election anywhere and expect miracles.

Should Bush have demanded that the insurance companies pay the victims of Katrina their insruance preminuns when they did not. Someone should have gone to jail for theft by talking because those people paid for a service for years and didn’t get it. Why don’t those fisherman and those oil drill workers pick themselves up by the bootstraps and FIND another job.

JC, If we had only heeded Jimmy Carter’s advice, it’s unlikely we’d be looking at that oil disaster in the Gulf

Is this the same Jimmy Carter that gave us the Dept. Of Energy, an agency of the Federal Government that nobody knows what the hell they do but we just keep funding BILLIONS of Dollars into with no idea why? That Jimmy Carter? Or the Jimmy Carter that gave us 19% interest rates on home loans? That Jimmy Carter?

BTW, ctucker you might have read BO’s books but you did not comphrehend them.

There’s more to the crisis than we have been told….and the President, in most cases, should deliberate to determine what the proper copurse of action is. Those who want the President to become emotional now would deride him later as being “another angry black man”! The speech was more a rah-rah speech…but a good poker player never reveals his strategy…even if he’s bluffing. The meeting is underway now; if the President insures that the escrow account is funded, BP enlists all the required forces to clean up the Gulf and cap the well…and the taxpayers of the Gulf are made “whole”….then, he’s done what should be done.

For those who are pushing the idea that the President could suspend the Jones Act,,,,,here’s the question: Could BP have hired the European expertise to clean up the spill on its own, thereby eliminating the necessity of the government’s involvement?? If oner looks at how Corporate MANAGEMENT handles a crisis, that speaks volumes!! Remember how Johnson & Johnson handled the Tylenol issue…..without governmental involvement…..if BP had done likewise……..

KWS, the only true responsibility of the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT is the common defense…the protocol for this was in place and NOT followed, it was put into place after the Exxon Valdez spill. This is just like the immigration bill in Arizona, it states exactly what the Federal law says, but allows the STATE to enforce it( something the Fed would never do). Like the immigration law the protocol has to be enforced before it can be of any consequence. This President is so out of touch that he does not have any idea on how to handle anything.

Obama is totally lost. There is not way his Admin could be as totally incompetent and inept as their actions appear in the Gulf. There simply is no way the U S Govt could be so derelict as to reject offers from foreign governments with expertise in such oil spills as Norway, Netherlands, much less fail to buy additional booms from the company in Maine. Then we find out he has bascially stood in the way of various oil companies offering assistance. Why hasn’t the Jones Act been waived allowing foreign governments to bring in their specialized clean up skimmers? There simply is no way they could possibly be this totally incompetent. This entire operation from ‘boot on the neck’ to two vacations and multiple concerts before ever addressing the issue has to be a plan. Nobody could be this incompetent. Is it possible this Admin’s response is what it is for potential political gain? Could it be this Admin has withheld approval of sand barriers, refused to buy additional boom, refused assistance from other countries, fought the oil companies pitching in and allowed OSHA to interfere with the cleanup, all of this in order to cause the calamity we now see strictly to use the situation to push his Cap and Tax? There is no other rational nor reasonable answer, expecially considering he “preached” for 14 of his 18 minutes on a need to convert to alternatives and get away from fossil fuels. How many times did he say we cannot let this moment pass, we must move forward with reform, we must break our dependence, we will create millions of new jobs? I thought for a few minutes he had brought one of his Healthcare speeches to read, it sure sounded like that bull$%!t.

So cause the oil company was slack on making sure everything was safe, its not their fault, but its the fault of left wing fundamentalist cause they made them drill out there. I though conservatives were about personal responsibility. That is why yall get branded as hypocrites. One thing applies to one set, but something totally different applies to another. Using your logic, if I lose my home because I couldn’t afford it, it’s the right wings fault because they are against regulation of CDO which leads to brokers selling them for profit which leads to them selling me a crappy loan.

Folks are acting as soon as the the oil was coming to the top of the well Obama should have been right there on the ground. It just amazing how folks wants him to do things right away when it took 2 terms to try to get it right. Folks keep talking about he is turning this into a socialist/communist country.
