Obama squandered his Oval Office moment

Obama could have called for a “moon shot” tonight to make a transition from fossil fuels to cleaner energy, and he failed to do that. He made his first-ever speech in the Oval Office, and he had all three networks at the 8 p.m. slot, and he didn’t make good use of it.

The speech was flat and uninspiring. He recited a litany of the things the administration has done to try to bring the spill under control, but it was a rehash of things the public has already heard. Yes, he’s going to make BP pay. That’s good — as far as it goes. But he didn’t use the moment to assert a resolute sense of command.

Nor did he use it to call on Americans to make the sacrifices that will be necessary to make the transition from petroleum to cleaner fuels. Yes, he said a little about it. But he didn’t even endorse the energy bill currently languishing in the Senate.

The president has wasted a crisis.

J.R. wrote: “I just noticed that the speech dealt with cleaning up the mess in the gulf, but didn’t say anything about stopping the leak. You don’t need to clean up the mess before you stop what is causing the mess. We have to stop the leak first, ”

Comprehensive immigration advocates should strongly consider J.R.’s statement. The same logic applies to that argument.

You gotta love Olbermann- “he didn’t aim too low- he didn’t aim at all”

I guess Olbermann and Matthews are now racists. Seriously, can we go straight to the Vatican and annul this “marriage”. “Honey- too much golf and movies. I think you have figured out the stress relief side of the equation. I am taking the kids, call me when you get your act together.”

I bet the Republicans wish he was speaking from a teleprompter when he cursed them out at their own meeting on live television. I loved it when he called them out and said you guys have been telling lies about me and my healthcare left and right. I bet McCain wished that he was on a teleprompter when he told him the classic line at the healthcare hearings “the election is over we are here to discuss healthcare.” GO OBAMA GO

Chris Mathews will highlight the far right fringe known as the tea party tonight @7.

Dick Armey and others are showing their hate for America and the constitution on the show.
They are a treasonous bunch just like the confederate soldiers of the south who tried to destroy America.
There is not a bit of difference in the tea party and the taliban, both are very intolerant and backwards.

Ms. Tucker what type vehicle(s) do YOU own? MAybe the govt. should place tariffs on people who commute 45 minutes or more one way. Do you really want Obama regulating what vehicle you drive, how much you drive it or what fuel you use? A president can’t command any of those things unless you are willing to be enslaved by federal regulations. How many green cars have you bought over the years?

When it comes to the use of the word “sacrifice”, why is it always the population that has to make sweeping changes? Why is sacrifice never asked of corporations and the way they do business? We have cell phones, internet, computers, email, video conferencing, faxing, IM, smart phones etc…. why is it still required that a majority of the population get in their cars everyday, drive to an office, and sit at their desk for 8 to 10 hours a day. All of which requires MASS quantities of fuel to do. At my office, I have Internet, computer, cell phone, fax machine, copier, scanner, LAN line etc…. At my home office, I have Internet, computer, cell phone, copier, scanner, LAN line etc… So why is it I need to commute 40 miles in traffic one way in order to accomplish the same tasks that can be done using the same tools that I have at home? Granted, there will always be a need for people to be in place in person, but it is rarely 5 days a week between the hours of 8:00am and 6:00pm. Imagine the reduction in costs if you don’t have to have a massive office complex to heat and cool. Imaginine the reduction in consumption if millions of people didn’t have to climb into their cars every single day to make the same commute to do the same job they could do at home. Why aren’t there incentives given to companies to reduce commuting trips, to reduce the need to have people on site when they can work from home and accomplish the same tasks? I’d be willing to bet we could cut at least a third of our dependence on oil if there was just a little more “sacrifice” on the part of the employers and the corporations.

Cynthia I agree with you. Obama wasted a moment to show true vision and leadership. Its too bad because crisis does open our minds to new directions, and the old divisions of partisanship quickly reharden. Also can you please remove Shirley Liquor’s post. williebkind, have you ever been to Western Europe?

He has not been more than 20 miles from his trailer in Coweta County. That is the problem with many right wing southerners, they live in a insular society where everyone thinks alike. So when someone has a different opinion they claim they speak for “most americans:”, when in reality they speak for a bunch of rural white cons. They seem to think what they think is the truth, whether than an opinion.

How they think a movement that has a majority of older white males will be large enough to win many major elections is delusional. They have Ostracized most Black,Hispanics,Asians,Muslims,Gays,Independents Whites, and moderate republican voters. Not a good recipe for wide success.
They will get a few victories in already conservative areas but basically they are just removing another Republican. Rand Paul is filling an old Republican seat just like the man who beat Bennett in Utah.

Bottom line you say wait until November, to quote Jay-Z “We don’t believe you, you need more people”.

It seems no president can lead or inspire a nation of lazy, ignorant, selfish, self-absorbed, hedonistic whiners, which is what the U.S. has become. Nobody wants to give up their SUV’s, endless idiotic TV shows, fast foods, and instant gratification, to roll up their sleeves and make sacrifices for the good of humanity and the generations to come. A truly transformational and courageous president must use the bully pulpit of the presidency to speak the truth and demand that Americans reduce their profligate, wasteful and ultimately suicidal hyper-consumption of the Earth’s resources before we completely destroy ourselves and our planet. Jimmy Carter tried to do this, and was crucified for his efforts. I still think Obama is doing the best he can under impossible stress. He was handed the Titanic after it struck the iceberg. No president has ever endured such irrational and corrosive criticism.

From what I can tell, as someone in no way associated with any party, the reason minorities should feel ostracized from the tea party is because the media tells them they should. Every image I have seen of these “vile” and “disgusting” and “racist” “right-wing extremists” shows a group of people usually standing around, not really doing anything. Certainly nothing violent. Yet the media has labeled them as a possible domestic terror threat. Apparently, anyone who doesn’t agree with the liberal big government nanny state agenda is now a racist or a bigot.

Then again, anyone not buying into the conservative dream of a big government nanny state agenda is anti-American and probably doesn’t believe in God.

CT: I also would have liked Obama to announce a “Manhattan Project” – like or “Moon Shot”-like project for clean energy. Such an expectation, however, was unrealistic.
First, there was a need for The President to talk about the Gulf disaster to the nation. Do you think a project like those above is ready to be announced on a few weeks time preparation?
Second, even the mild statements on clean energy I the address has been already met with cry of politics from the other side. The fact of life is that Obama cannot force anything really substantial with the Party of No having so much power. And look at all the idiocy on these pages and how would those people howl. CYNTHIA: “If we had only heeded Jimmy Carter’s advice, it’s unlikely we’d be looking at that oil disaster in the Gulf”

Agreed! If we had heeded Jimmy Carter’s advice, we’d still be toe to toe with Brezhnev’s successors, the Iron Curtain and Berlin Wall would still divide Europe and an oil spill in the Gulf would have been the least of our worries. His was a most miserable presidency, its brightest day being the day Reagan defeated him.

Like President Obama, Carter was given to making promises that he was incapable of keeping:

“Beginning this moment, this nation will never use more foreign oil than we did in 1977 — never. From now on, every new addition to our demand for energy will be met from our own production and our own conservation … To ensure that we meet these targets, I will use my presidential authority to set import quotas … These quotas will ensure a reduction in imports….”

Believe it or not Blacks can think for themselves when it comes to voting. We vote for the lesser of two evils when we vote Dem.
When I see tea party protesters with racist signs, or saying Obama is a Kenyan, or not an American, I am smart enough to detect racism. I do not need the media to tell me how to feel about those images.
You can look at the videos leading up to the election, why as a Blackman would I want to be part of a party that obviously wants me @ the back of the bus.

I am still trying to understand what you people want him to do. He can’t go down to the ocean himself and and stop the oil leak. This was caused by a private company, they are responsible for fixing the leak. For conservatives, you always complain about wanting the goverment to stay out of private enterprise, but then complain he isn’t doing enough to meddle in provae enterprise. To the left, you are made cause he didn’t promote getting off fossil fuels, to what, nothing is ready yet. His administration has more money budgeted to the research and development of alternative fuels than the previous administrations. A new fuel wont get invented over night.Calm down

Like CT, I also went to Auburn so I’m probably not up on this stuff as much as I should be but can someone please tell me which of the alternative fuels will run my car, airplane or lawnmower cheaper and more efficiently? I spose’ at some point someone will come up with a really cool way to power stuff but so far wind, solar and ethanol ain’t it. Instead of penalizing all of these businesses away from dirty fuels, how about incentivizing them to come up with other ways. But, seems to me you’d have to let them (gasp) make a tidy profit from it.
