Despite its racial profiling, Americans support Arizona law

Never mind the racial profiling. Never mind the fact that the new Arizona law aimed at illegal immigrants  accomplishes little except harassment of the Spanish-speaking. Never mind the fact that Arizona is taking a big hit on tourism dollars because of it. Another poll shows most Americans think it’s a fine idea.

That includes nearly half of Democrats. From McClatchey:

A strong majority of Americans support Arizona’s controversial new immigration law and would back similar laws in their own states, a new McClatchy-Ipsos poll found.

Sixty-one percent of Americans — and 64 percent of registered voters — said they favored the law in a survey of 1,016 adults conducted May 6-9.

Strikingly, nearly half of Democrats like the law, under which local law enforcement officers are tasked with verifying people’s immigration status if they suspect them of being in the country illegally. While the Democratic Party generally is regarded as more sympathetic to illegal immigrants’ plights, 46 percent of Democrats said they favored the law for Arizona and 49 percent said they’d favor the law’s passage in their own states.

More than 8 in 10 Republicans and 54 percent of independents favor the law.

In addition, about 69 percent of Americans said they wouldn’t mind if police officers stopped them to ask for proof of their citizenship or legal rights to be in the country; about 29 percent would mind, considering it a violation of their rights; and about 3 percent were unsure.

A separate Pew Research Center poll on the Arizona law released Wednesday found similar sentiments.

The oddest thing about all the support for the law is that, while it supposedly stems from outrage over crimes committed by illegal immigrants, crime is down in Arizona:

But while the situation in Arizona is dire in some respects, it’s actually improving, not getting worse. For example, the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics notes that violent crimes in the state fell from 512 per 100,000 people in 2005 to 447 per 100,000 people in 2008, the last year data was compiled.

And, despite the clamor about dangerous immigrants, crime rates are lowest in states with the highest immigration growth rates — such as Arizona. Crime in the 19 states with the highest immigrant populations dropped by 13.6 percent from 1994 to 2004, compared to 7.1 percent for the other 32 states.

Finally, although the U.S. illegal immigrant population doubled to about 12 million from 1994 to 2004, the violent crime rate nationwide declined by 35.1 percent while the property crime rate fell by 25 percent. So, more illegal immigrants does not equate to more crime.

Critics accuse the federal government of doing nothing about illegal immigration. But there are more Border Patrol officers now on duty than ever before, and heightened enforcement has been a significant factor in reducing the number of illegal immigrants entering the country.

The law is also going to make the economy in Arizon worse. Tourism has taken a hit:

Since the state passed the nation’s toughest immigration law three weeks ago, its meeting and events business has fallen drastically.

Hispanic civil rights groups are boycotting Arizona and urging others to do the same. Officials at the National Council of La Raza, one of the groups driving the boycott, had privately asked the RNC not to meet in Phoenix.

The city risks losing as much as $90 million in hotel and convention business over the next five years because of the controversy, according to city estimates released Wednesday. The state’s hotel and lodging association has counted 23 canceled meetings for a loss of between $6 and $10 million. On Wednesday, Los Angeles became the largest city to join the boycott.

More than anything else, the poll shows how emotional an issue immigration is in this country — and the reason few politicians have any stomach for dealing with it.

I never agree with Ms. Tucker, but you would think she would at least attempt to get her facts right. I just read the law. It does NOT contain racial profiling and actually strictly forbids it. It goes further to state that the law must be interpreted within the scope of the state and U.S. constitutions.
Just because you say it does not make it true.
Please read, then give your opinion.
Correction, please read the law (and not someone else’s comments about the law), then give your opinion.

First off, WORK is not degrading, it is something to be proud of and “jobs Americans won’t do is a tired old fictional liberal talking point. I used to landscape, made good money and never felt degraded. Now you cannot live off landscaping unless you own the company because Ills have driven down the pay because they get it under the table and pay no taxes.

And I am blaming the Illegals for many many things Student: dumbing down our classrooms with kids who dont speak english, bogging down emergency rooms, not paying taxes, committing extremely high rates of crime, gangs, DUI at an alarming rate, leeching off our benefits like WIC and food stamps etc…etc…etc…

I applaud the courageous leaders of Arizona and their efforts to enforce a situation concerning the eviction of illegal aliens (who have NO rights in this country) that had destroyed the fiscal welfare of neighboring state California.

Illegals and crime> AZ rancher shot and killed by drug smugglers, , AZ policeman attacked by 12 illegals along border and left for dead, Mexican drug lord hit squad kidnaps and murder wedding party of 4 this past weekend.

It is time to seal the borders and instigate martial law in the border states. California has proven to be irresponsible in stating will boycott AZ business and their leaders (what a disgrace for the word ) will be demonized at all levels. This was at one time the United States of America but it appears anarchy and stupidity flamed by writers such as Cynthia will only continue to spew falsehood and racial blame crap to weaken our country further.

I am an American European who was born in France of American Military officers. I moved here in 1960 coming over on the USS United States and my first recollection was seeing the Statue of Libery in NYC Harbor. I maintain us Citizen and French citizenship all done with proper legal documentation.

I hope the Cobb Police do arrest and deport the illegal alien for lying to an officer and giving false information for the last 10 years!!!We can not afford to have lying “wanta be” lawyer in this country.

Lawabiding citizens be aware of ruthlessness and lies being rammed down our throats!!

The reason why most of us support the AZ law is that we are sick and tired of the politics around this issue. We don’t support the legislation that Harry Reid and other propose since it allows people here illegally to stay. Illegal means “not in accordance with the law” meaning its criminal. Enforce the law, deport the illegals as any other country in the world would do. France would kick me out in a heartbeat if I was living there permanently without being there legally.

CT-You use racial profiling as a problem with this bill.
Can you prove to us this bill will specifically profile anyone by pointing out where this is in the said bill?
Be specific now, don’t just make claims without support especially when you are talking about legislation. Surely there will be something in the bill that specifically says, “AZ law enforcement can/will stop all Hispanic looking people and take them to jail”.
I’d like for you to just point it out.

So, there are about 20 or 30 million illegal immigrants in the USA. Big job, making them all go away. What is it about this conversation that reminds me of Nazi Germany? Oh yeah, unifying an unintelligent and fearful group by creating a common enemy. In this case, Hispanics. Basically this conversation is about hate. Which seems to get an inordinate number of you off. Illegal immigration is not even a topic worth reviewing. People who have come to this country are not going to leave. And no one is going to go after them. It just doesn’t make good sense. Which means that you are hating as a hobby. Maybe you could try golf?

During their working life, undocumented immigrants in the United States will pay, on average, approximately $80,000 more in taxes per capita than they use in government services, owing to the fact that they are not eligible to take advantage of almost all of the social service programs offered by the federal government, according to a study released by the National Council of La Raza.

According to the report, in June of 2007, the president’s Council of Economic Advisers stated that the “impact of undocumented immigration on public budgets is likely to be very positive.”

The report cites the Texas Comptroller’s disclosure that, in 2006, undocumented immigrants paid about $424.7 million more in state revenues – including sales tax and school property tax – than they used in state services, including education and health care.
In addition to sales and property taxes, [an estimated three-quarters] of undocumented immigrants also pay payroll taxes through the use of false Social Security numbers.

According to statistics from the National Council of La Raza, these employees contribute approximately $7 billion to Social Security and $1.5 billion to Medicare every year, despite the fact that they are ineligible to receive these benefits.

Granny Godzilla “How do we secure the borders?” Think about that fact that those that are in charge of this aren’t performing adequately yet they continue to get paid to do it. I see illegals/(”Fugitives of the law?”) running through my town daily and they never go away. Yet they scream about rights? The very agency in charge of this thrives on mediocrity. I guarantee the jobs these people do will soon be filled by people in this country that are legal and like everything else will correct itself in time. So Peadawg and others…are you going to put the new roof on your house, wash the dishes at your favorite Chili’s, landscape your yard, sweep the floor of the warehouse? I agree we need to do more to secure our borders, however, my bet is that one of your ancestors did those jobs not long ago. and it’s what allowed you to be here and stake your claim to your own 40 acres and a mule.

If there are so many “real” Americans clamoring for those jobs, why aren’t they being filled in the worst economy in 3 generations? How come there isn’t a line around the block to get one of these jobs that all the illegals are supposedly usurping? There isn’t, because “real” Americans consider it beneath them now. So you decide…would you rather pay 3x as much for a “real” American to build your new house at $40 an hour, or would you rather outsource this and get the best price you can with someone that might have to only pay $12 and hr to a…god forbid…Mexican? I’ll bet you a silver dollar you and every other Tea Party idiot out there would hope good ol’ capitalism would win out and you’d get the best price you could; you’d bitch and moan about paying $35 per person at Chili’s for a hamburger, but that’s what will happen if you have to pay the dishwasher and server $15 and hr as opposed to $6. You can’t have it both ways folks. Neither side has a clue what to do and so they will do what our country has been doing for about 60 years now…pass the buck; make it someone else’s problem. After all, that has become the “real” American way now. I don’t have a solution either, nor do I purport to. However, passing draconian laws like this that violate EVERYONE’s civil rights is throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Our freedoms are what make this country great. By the way, I need a new deck. Can you guys suggest a good cheap contractor who employs only “real” Americans?

Kayker. ” All of them want the latino vote. Another example of where our elected officials will be the death of this country yet” Politicians have always catered (sometimes disgustingly evil) to the voters. Vinson, Russell, and other bigots stayed in office far too long because they catered to the base instincts of the voters. If this country survived these bigoted clowns, America’s death is probably a long way down the road. One would think that the world would get past old geezers promoting wars for young kids to fight and die in.

I do not agree with the crime stats used in the article as they can be very misleading. It is well known that crime decreases during boom times, through which most of the crime statistics reported were during boom times. It is also well known that crime increases during recessions. It is also reported that the first to lose jobs are the undocumented workers. Who knows if there is an actual correlation here between the two now, but I would not be surprised if there was.

Liberals who favor doing nothing about our immigration laws have fallen victim to an affliction which is appropriately named “Selective Indignation”. They worry about being politically correct when our country is overrun by millions of illegal people who have no business being here and are virtually breaking the back of states like California. They ignore our laws on illegal immigration but seek to deny the right to bear arms, a right that is clearly granted in the 2nd Amendment. They worry about protecting the rights of criminals on death row who commit unspeakable crimes but have no qualms about taking the life of an innocent newborn who has done nothing but be in the wrong place at the right time. They criticize and demonize those who work for a living and seek to keep what they earn but encourage breaking the law by organizations like ACORN who clearly was at fault. They vilify CEOs of those evil corporations who pay their CEOs “outlandish” salaries but ignore people like Franklin Raines with his 190M golden parachute who should be in jail for fraud. They endorse organizations like the Congressional Black Caucus who are, as JC Watts called them, ” a bunch of race pimps”, but scream to high heaven about white only organizations, of which there are very few.
Being “selectively indignant” is the favorite tactic of liberals in their “quest to protect the less fortunate” and those who are not willing to take responsibility for their lives, however what is fair for some is not fair for all. Sharpton and Je$$ie make a fortune off of this tactic but few if any liberals criticize them or other blacks like them for the true race pimps that they are. Hypocritical? It’s gone far past that and it’s getting pretty old.

These people (the illegal immigrants) have broken our laws. I don’t mean just our Mexican friends, but any others that are here under similar circumstances like Asians, Arabs Irish, Canadians, British and the like. In the zeal for cheap labor and Democrat voting blocs this point is gleefully overlooked. If the tables were turned and they were illegally crossing the border the opposite way, what do you think the result would be? Remember the North Korea incident and the Iraq incident? I venture to say that Mexico has similar Draconian laws on its books. The “undocumented” and illegals should be sent home before they cause any more cost to our states(who can’t print more money) like the federal government does to cover these unfair cost burdens.

Where is the racial profiling Cynthia? Being an illegal alien isn’t a race!

How will this law lead to the harassment of spanish-speaking-people anymore than any other law on the books? Are you acknowledging that the spanish-speaking-community is responsible for a disproportionate share of the problem when it comes to illegal aliens?

How is asking someone about their immigration status that has already been stopped for another lawful reason harassment?

If 70% of all illegal aliens in the U.S. are spanish-speaking then 70% of all enforcement actions should be aimed at their communities!

You seem to concern yourself with the negative impact this bill is having on the Arizona economy, did you ever concern yourself with the negative impact illegal aliens had on the Arizona state budget?

The bottom line Cynthia is, if you want to trash SB 1070 at least take the time to read it first!

Since there is NO racial profiling in this law, there is literally nothing accurate in your column this morning, Cynthia.

That’s a FALSE statement; the POLICE have the DISCRETION to pull anyone over for ANY reason….and in Arizona, a driver’s license is NOT proof of citizenship as it is in other states!! This will require EVERYONE to carry a PASSPORT!!

How does the police determine if a person is illigal?? By RACIAL profiling!! Too many people on this blog have yet to be racially profiled and pulled over by the police for no reason; those of us that HAVE know and understand!!

California isn’t doing business with Arizona; the Alphas moved their conclave to Vegas because they did not want their Hispanic members to be racially profiled by the cops…..
