Despite its racial profiling, Americans support Arizona law

Never mind the racial profiling. Never mind the fact that the new Arizona law aimed at illegal immigrants  accomplishes little except harassment of the Spanish-speaking. Never mind the fact that Arizona is taking a big hit on tourism dollars because of it. Another poll shows most Americans think it’s a fine idea.

That includes nearly half of Democrats. From McClatchey:

A strong majority of Americans support Arizona’s controversial new immigration law and would back similar laws in their own states, a new McClatchy-Ipsos poll found.

Sixty-one percent of Americans — and 64 percent of registered voters — said they favored the law in a survey of 1,016 adults conducted May 6-9.

Strikingly, nearly half of Democrats like the law, under which local law enforcement officers are tasked with verifying people’s immigration status if they suspect them of being in the country illegally. While the Democratic Party generally is regarded as more sympathetic to illegal immigrants’ plights, 46 percent of Democrats said they favored the law for Arizona and 49 percent said they’d favor the law’s passage in their own states.

More than 8 in 10 Republicans and 54 percent of independents favor the law.

In addition, about 69 percent of Americans said they wouldn’t mind if police officers stopped them to ask for proof of their citizenship or legal rights to be in the country; about 29 percent would mind, considering it a violation of their rights; and about 3 percent were unsure.

A separate Pew Research Center poll on the Arizona law released Wednesday found similar sentiments.

The oddest thing about all the support for the law is that, while it supposedly stems from outrage over crimes committed by illegal immigrants, crime is down in Arizona:

But while the situation in Arizona is dire in some respects, it’s actually improving, not getting worse. For example, the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics notes that violent crimes in the state fell from 512 per 100,000 people in 2005 to 447 per 100,000 people in 2008, the last year data was compiled.

And, despite the clamor about dangerous immigrants, crime rates are lowest in states with the highest immigration growth rates — such as Arizona. Crime in the 19 states with the highest immigrant populations dropped by 13.6 percent from 1994 to 2004, compared to 7.1 percent for the other 32 states.

Finally, although the U.S. illegal immigrant population doubled to about 12 million from 1994 to 2004, the violent crime rate nationwide declined by 35.1 percent while the property crime rate fell by 25 percent. So, more illegal immigrants does not equate to more crime.

Critics accuse the federal government of doing nothing about illegal immigration. But there are more Border Patrol officers now on duty than ever before, and heightened enforcement has been a significant factor in reducing the number of illegal immigrants entering the country.

The law is also going to make the economy in Arizon worse. Tourism has taken a hit:

Since the state passed the nation’s toughest immigration law three weeks ago, its meeting and events business has fallen drastically.

Hispanic civil rights groups are boycotting Arizona and urging others to do the same. Officials at the National Council of La Raza, one of the groups driving the boycott, had privately asked the RNC not to meet in Phoenix.

The city risks losing as much as $90 million in hotel and convention business over the next five years because of the controversy, according to city estimates released Wednesday. The state’s hotel and lodging association has counted 23 canceled meetings for a loss of between $6 and $10 million. On Wednesday, Los Angeles became the largest city to join the boycott.

More than anything else, the poll shows how emotional an issue immigration is in this country — and the reason few politicians have any stomach for dealing with it.

And to all you people to love to blame this on the current administration, where were you when all this was occurring with the previous administration? It’s amazing how all this anger surfaces now. Republicans ran this country for the previous 8 years, why is it in the current mess that its in? None of you will ever admit it, but there is an underlying reason for all this new found anger, Hmmmm……… I wonder!! You people are SAD!

YET MORE DISINFORMATION FROM THE FAR LEFT CYNTHIA TUCKER!!!

WHERE in the law is racial profiling?

Umm… when pulled over for traffic violations, WHAT IS THE FIRST THING THE COP ASKS YOU FOR, BLACK, WHITE, BROWN, OR PURPLE???

Could it be your ID and your INSURANCE???

Cynthia, like others of her ilk, LOVE illegal immigrants. Why?

Because illegal immigrants have babies in this country, meaning those babies are American citizens.

THEN, because those illegals are always poor, they must survive off of the government teat.

Meaning, the survive off of big government social programs.

Meaning, their kids are overwhelmingly going to become big government DEMOCRATS.

Cynthia Tucker hates this law because it will negatively impact the numbers currently being born into the Democratic Party.

That in itself is a kind of racism. She only sees these people as future voters to HER line of thinking. Nothing else. She doesn’t care how many people are killed by illegal immigrants. She doesn’t care how the economy is effected. She doesn’t care about the 300% rise in kidnappings in AZ.

All she cares about are all of the babies these people are going to have that will grow up to be Democrats.

Also, Mrs. Tucker, you’re so FULL of crap when it comes to profiling.

Profiling keeps terrorists off of airplanes. WHO is going to be the most likely suspect of terrorism? The little old white lady? Or the Pakistani exchange student?

Profiling catches serial killers. WHO is going to be the most likely suspect in a serial killer case? The black woman? Or the WHITE MIDDLE CLASS MAN???

Profiling is GOOD. If it were up to YOU, we’d have planes being blown out of the sky every day and the RTK and Green River killers would have never been caught.

Shame on you for your lies.

What Cynthia fails to mention is the enormous drain on our society brought on by the invasion of illegals via public schools, public health and criminal justice. We’ve simply been told that we shouldn’t resent this invasion for such a long time that politicians are having a difficult time understanding the sudden growth of a backbone by the public. Wake UP – we’re mad as hell and we’re not going to take it any more!

I’m racially profiled every single time I fill out a job application so affrimative action babies like Cynthia Tucker can get a job. I guess that’s not wrong, right? Dumb effing c-nt!

The fact that you fill out applications instead of sending a resume shows how far down you are on the job chain. No one is taking your job, you just lack the qualifications stop playing victim and blaming other races for your failures.

You prefer the good ole days when being white was enough to get the job, no matter how stupid you were. Now you have to compete fairly against other races and find yourself inadequate.

Based on your type of delusional and irrational lies, falsely proclaiming that Arizona’s SB 1070 promotes “racial profiling”, the Los Angeles City Council has approved a boycott of Arizona.

LA, and all of California’s long time and still growing nihilism has fueled their stubbornness and their stupidity, for decades. It has allowed them to ignore that they were being overrun, overwhelmed and made bankrupt, by the enormous cost’s of illegal immigration.

Now, the problem has become so large and so blatant, that the political conditions have deteriorated into a one sided situation, that is wholly in favor of the illegals! Of course this has all been at the expense of tens of millions of legal citizens.

That condition is so bad today, that hundreds of thousands of legal citizens, along with their productive tax paying jobs and business ventures are fleeing both LA and the state of California, so fast, that the city and the state are hemorrhaging from loss of revenue.

As if that weren’t enough of a self created dire emergency situation, California is about to lose one, and perhaps two U.S. House of Representative seats, following the 2010 census realignment.

But even with all that going on, and all the associated troubles those problems create, and will undoubtedly continue to exacerbate, the LA city council doesn’t have anything better to do than posture and play identity politics, by threatening and harassing a nearby state that is trying to prevent themselves from also being overwhelmed by the same sustained flood of illegal immigrants!

Today, the once mighty but suicidal California is dying of the poison of illegal immigration, they gladly ingested for decades. She is shaking and down on her knees, and crying out for even MORE federal handouts! With all that so we must ask ourselves, can America afford to bail out California?

The answer is no. And California will die. Bankrupt, she will be stripped of her congressional delegation, and become a temporary U.S. protectorate, with an appointed Governor and governing body.

Only then, fittingly, can California begin to rise again, like the Phoenix, the Phoenix that California’s politburo style leaders of today, loath today.

What part of illegal is not understood? Illegal alien–a foreigner who enters the U.S. without an entry or immigrant visa, esp. a person who crosses the border by avoiding inspection or who overstays the period of time allowed as a visitor, tourist, or businessperson.
What part of hard work do Americans not understand; I have farmed; raised chickens, milked cows. Wait a minute I am white; the Republicans say we don’t do that…oh, but the democrats call it profiling. Sounds like a bunch of rich scumbags living off of my tax money that don’t belong in congress anyway. Can’t find my Social Security Money? CT have you seen how Mexico and other South American countries patrol and enforce their borders? Why is it so out of line for the USA to do just a part of that? Sovereign borders are needed. AZ is only doing what the Federal government has not done. I applaud them for that. We are a family of immigrants and to stand in line to apply for visas and proper paperwork is not asking too much of an individual to get here. The wait is also necessary, as it takes time to cover background checks and financials. Few of those millions already here illegally are here as asylum-seekers. Most all are here for financial reasons, period. So, do not condemn those that fear our over-taxed welfare and medical systems will soon fail. Push your savior Obama to fund and enforce what is already on the books. If it is not reasonable and humane, change it properly and you will have less states going ahead with enforcement of what the Federal government should be doing.

Not for nothing – but instead of debating whether or not this is racial profiling, let’s get to the important question. What is wrong with (racial) profiling? The concept of “profiling” is a statistical tool used to narrow down our logical targets and make the process of achieving a correct answer to a question more efficient. If I, as a white male, match the profile of a white male that just robbed a bank, well guess what…I am not going to be surprised if the cops question me while they pass up my black friend. It only makes sense.

Quit the debate about profiling – it is a tool, and like any tool can be used for good or for bad. As long as it’s use is justified by common sense and logic, then the debate is over.

The most important aspect of American life is access to political power (ie voting and holding political office).
This power along with the border is what must be protected.

Build the wall. Pass the AZ law too. Get it done. It isn’t about profiling. It isn’t about being anti-immigrant. In one way or another, we are all immigrants.

It is about illegal entry, and getting the benefits of being Americans all the while cutting in line in front of those that are trying to get here legally. THAT IS ALL.

Good morning all. Minor correction to the title, should read “Because of the Racial Profiling, Americans Support Arizona Law.” I think Americans general favor racial profiling as an element of law enforcement, and I think that collective wisdom generally creditable.

To the substance of the essay, I favor something close to open borders, but I do not find the Arizona law objectionable; seems to me to be a pretty reasonable balance between valid security needs and inconvenience to the public. I will note that my personal appearance may draw me into the ambit of racial profiling, but anyone who has to go through Hartsfield screening on a regular basis will be pretty blasé on the concept. I note, without further supporting words, a marvelous essay by Mary Anastasia O’Grady in the Monday WSJ (link: online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703338004575229913566531720.html) wherein she cautions us to distinguish the Arizona drug criminals from the Arizona hotel maids, noting that “illegality” is not necessarily the distinguishing feature for identifying the undesirables.

I had lunch with a drafter of the legislation. It is not profiling, there must be probable cause as to some other offense before they can be checked. It is perfectly acceptable.

I have no issue with guest workers, just comply with the law and register yourself and provide information. If the feds, under both Bush and Obama, are not going to enforce the law Arizona should.

If the feds were not enforcing anti-pollution laws, and a state stepped it, would that be an issue?

If the feds were not enforcing the ADA, and the state stepped in, would there be a problem?

If the feds were not enforcing national speed limits , and the state stepped in, would that be a problem?

If the feds were not enforcing child trafficking laws and the state stepped in, would that be a problem?

So when the states step in and enforce federal immigration laws regarding illegal aliens, it is a problem????????

PS – If a racist cop is going to profile people, he’s gonna pull over DWB’s and DWM’s regardless of the existence of this law.

I have African friends from Zambia who cannot get their son/brother into the country – but they are trying to do it leagally. Should he just sneak in and that will make it OK? Our paralegal was from Bolivia, but could not get her sister in legally. Does that mean she should break the law and come in? I want immigrants, legal ones, in all colors of the human skin rainbow. But the sneaks are cheaters who break in line above the people I see that want to bring in relatives who want to stay and be citizens legally.

WHEN IS IT EVER OK IN ANY CIVILIZED SOCIETY TO BREAK IN LINE?

People are not looking at the bigger Picture- Its called Racism-Racism is one group who thinks theya re superior to another using their power to control others through Politics, Education and Land. So lets see the first part Politics – Native Americans and Latino Americans who do look exactly alike are being made to show ID based on racial Profiling. Using Politics (signing into law) in order to exert power. Education- Getting rid of Cultural classes that make Europeans or the American government look bad. Do we also take out the Holocaust so that Europe and America dont look bad for their roles in the Genocide? Its US History. Now what else will they institute- If you are Latino then you must be housed in a certain area. I do think that Immigration laws need to be changed and I like the Idea by Democrats that the people here should learn English, Pay a Fine etc. because in theory there is no real way to kick out Millions of Illegal immigrants without using Military force which was done to Latin Americans in the 1900’s forcing some US citizens to also be set back by a mistake. In addition, if there should have never been an inequality in the amount of Visas issued to immigrants across the world. Example: 200,000 work visas and 50 to Jamaica lets be fair. So while I do understand the intent of Arizona they need to come up with better policy. T

First and foremost, “Racial Profiling”, “bigotry” and most other terminology have been watered down and essentially destroyed by being misused repeatedly by the Left. The words games are over and AMERICANS are seeing through the hypocrisy. Liberals should look in the mirror for someone to blame.

What may I ask is so “bewildering” about law abiding AMERICANS support of a LAW? One can only assume that those that support illegal immigration are law breakers themselves in some capacity. And yes, I can “throw stones” and there is no need to for me “walk in someone elses shoes” because I and many other don’t break and disregard laws.

“The youn lady at KSU is a prime example, one semester from graduating , plans for law school, and a member of campus organizations. She is a well rounded addition to America, but the bigots want to send her back because of the term illegal.”

Illegal is not a “term”. For YEARS this ILLEGAL young lady broke countless LAWS and FINALLY she is paying the price for her dishonesty and criminal behavior. Sorry, but those who ignore LAWS are NOT “well rounded additions” to America. I bet Sharptongue has broken plenty of laws, which should be investigated as well!

cynthia, you and all other liberals stir the pot to suit you…..the point is ILLEGAL, meaning breaking the law! They have to be breaking a law to be stopped, just as it stands now. What is the big deal…if you are not doing anything wrong you won’t be illegal. If you are illegal, you are breaking the law. Bottom line, jobs are just like the drugs. NO DEMAND, NO BUSINESS. NO LAW BROKEN! It is American citizens greed that draws them across the border. If a company is working an illegal alien they should permanantly lose their business license never to do business again. if there is no demand for workers or drugs……..no illegal visitors. if they truly want to be americans, they should go thru the proper proceedures, embrace america as the german and irish immigrants did and become americans. I welcome them with open arms but I want them to cling to the american flag if they want our milk and honey. The early immigrants didn’t demand to be treated separately and be called irish-american or german-american. They became Americans and were proud to be AMERICAN. Anyone who isn’t proud to be American can go live in Iran where they “really treat their women well”. Don’t come to Monroe County because the excuses don’t wash. There is clearly an issue that Arizona citizens are paying for the issues of citizens that are not only not Arizona residents but not United States citizens. I keep hearing differing reports on what is in this bill (which is not surprising being that we expect so little from our elected officials now to actually read the bills themselves instead of having a staff member read it and give a Cliff Notes version). I do not believe that you should be able to stop someone because they look foreign. I do believe that if the police question someone and they do not have paperwork and they are found to be illegal (whether Mexican, Canadian, German, whatever) then they should be immediately deported. Hopefully this was done as a overreaction to make the federal government take action (because it is their job). It does not matter to me what Mexico’s immigration policy is because we hope to be better than Mexico not pick up their same laws and government.

The new Immigration policy should be to first secure the borders. The next step would involve taking in any hardworking individuals you have from any country (with a skill set) but that country has to take two free loading natural born Americans. Our popualtion will decrease but we will be much more efficient and use less resources. Sounds perfect.
