Despite its racial profiling, Americans support Arizona law

Never mind the racial profiling. Never mind the fact that the new Arizona law aimed at illegal immigrants  accomplishes little except harassment of the Spanish-speaking. Never mind the fact that Arizona is taking a big hit on tourism dollars because of it. Another poll shows most Americans think it’s a fine idea.

That includes nearly half of Democrats. From McClatchey:

A strong majority of Americans support Arizona’s controversial new immigration law and would back similar laws in their own states, a new McClatchy-Ipsos poll found.

Sixty-one percent of Americans — and 64 percent of registered voters — said they favored the law in a survey of 1,016 adults conducted May 6-9.

Strikingly, nearly half of Democrats like the law, under which local law enforcement officers are tasked with verifying people’s immigration status if they suspect them of being in the country illegally. While the Democratic Party generally is regarded as more sympathetic to illegal immigrants’ plights, 46 percent of Democrats said they favored the law for Arizona and 49 percent said they’d favor the law’s passage in their own states.

More than 8 in 10 Republicans and 54 percent of independents favor the law.

In addition, about 69 percent of Americans said they wouldn’t mind if police officers stopped them to ask for proof of their citizenship or legal rights to be in the country; about 29 percent would mind, considering it a violation of their rights; and about 3 percent were unsure.

A separate Pew Research Center poll on the Arizona law released Wednesday found similar sentiments.

The oddest thing about all the support for the law is that, while it supposedly stems from outrage over crimes committed by illegal immigrants, crime is down in Arizona:

But while the situation in Arizona is dire in some respects, it’s actually improving, not getting worse. For example, the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics notes that violent crimes in the state fell from 512 per 100,000 people in 2005 to 447 per 100,000 people in 2008, the last year data was compiled.

And, despite the clamor about dangerous immigrants, crime rates are lowest in states with the highest immigration growth rates — such as Arizona. Crime in the 19 states with the highest immigrant populations dropped by 13.6 percent from 1994 to 2004, compared to 7.1 percent for the other 32 states.

Finally, although the U.S. illegal immigrant population doubled to about 12 million from 1994 to 2004, the violent crime rate nationwide declined by 35.1 percent while the property crime rate fell by 25 percent. So, more illegal immigrants does not equate to more crime.

Critics accuse the federal government of doing nothing about illegal immigration. But there are more Border Patrol officers now on duty than ever before, and heightened enforcement has been a significant factor in reducing the number of illegal immigrants entering the country.

The law is also going to make the economy in Arizon worse. Tourism has taken a hit:

Since the state passed the nation’s toughest immigration law three weeks ago, its meeting and events business has fallen drastically.

Hispanic civil rights groups are boycotting Arizona and urging others to do the same. Officials at the National Council of La Raza, one of the groups driving the boycott, had privately asked the RNC not to meet in Phoenix.

The city risks losing as much as $90 million in hotel and convention business over the next five years because of the controversy, according to city estimates released Wednesday. The state’s hotel and lodging association has counted 23 canceled meetings for a loss of between $6 and $10 million. On Wednesday, Los Angeles became the largest city to join the boycott.

More than anything else, the poll shows how emotional an issue immigration is in this country — and the reason few politicians have any stomach for dealing with it.

Asked @ 9:25, thank you for ignoring my insult. Now, no one is denying Coyotes are bad, but “let’s go after them” is still not going to work.

I actually think we are more on the same page of sympathizing with the people who are being used (illegal immigrants) and realizing the problem is with people who exploit them. However, this blog is currently filled with folks who prefer chest-beating over addressing the real problem: DEMAND for cheap labor (which they don’t seem to mind when buying $1.29 lb chicken,) and drugs. Blaming those darn Mexicans, who feed our nasty habits, feels so much better.

My ancestors were forced upon a slave ship long ago and there was no travelocity involved. So I guess you are stuck with me. However, it doesn’t mean that you are going to be successful at getting rid of people like myself or hispanics.

Everything that is happening in this country at this time is a reaction by a group of scared people; who can’t fathom the fact of being in the minority in the future.

You can pass all the laws you want, close the boarders and hide under the bed. I predict it will happen and possibly in the next decade.

It’s simple.. THEY ARE ILLEGAL.

There are legal ways to migrate to the US (millions have done it) and illegal. How can any sane person rationalize illegal entry? It causes chaos, overwhelms communities, and allows criminals and the ability to pour in. There should be ONE legal method to enter the US.

Why is this such a radical idea to some? Cynthia, I’d like to hear your response.

@ Aquagirl – “Go after them is not going to work”

There has been some success in the war on drugs by cutting off the supply of ingredients that are used to create Meth. The Mexican drug cartells were cooking and selling potent stuff here in the US (no Mexican labs required) and the Feds finally targeted their raw chemical supply. When the purity of the product went down so did the high addiction levels in the US.

You are correct it is not as simple as “just go after them” but the whole war has not been a failure. We don’t do enough to punish those who use illegal labor. With e-verify there is no excuse for hiring people who aren’t here on a work visa or citizens. It can be done. A local Atlanta home builder I know insisted his employees and his contractors employees were legally allowed to work in the US and his contstruction quality and supply of labor were very good.

Simply put, this is all about racism. No one will ever stand up and say it, but it is. I’m tired of all the rhetoric about the strain these people put on the economy and the crime. Please!!! First of all most of these people are harder working than the racists who are trying so hard to put them out. They take jobs that most of us would not want to do. And while most of the money they make may be sent back home, what about the money that they pump into the economy. They purchase goods an services just like all you good ole patriotic Americans do!! Most of these people come here because they want something better for themselves and their families. That is the same process that populated this “great nation” after it was stolen from the Native Americans.
And the next argument is about the government services that they take advantage of. Once again, give me a break. Donald Trump is a billionaire who has benefited multiple times from gov’t services and hand outs. It’s called bankruptcy!!! That is a government handout!!! Ok, I can understand the need for people to be here legally, but this law is not the way to achieve that goal. This law is indeed racial profiling, no matter how you dress it up!!

On another note, Cynthia I would like to thank you for the insightful articles that you right. Please keep doing what you do because there need to be voices of reason and truthfulness in the midst of all the hate anger that are being spewed in this country right now.

Did you happen to see all the counties announcing teacher layoffs over the past few days? A big contributor to that outcome is illegal immigration. Our public school classrooms are growing fast and a big reason why is when illegals set up shop and immediately start popping out families with 5 or more mouths to feed, it falls on our public schools to educate them…wait for it…for FREE. Because they are working illegally (i.e. not on payrolls, thereby not paying taxes) they are only takers not givers to our system.

See California basically bankrupt today because there are way too many takers and not enough givers in their state. So, sure, open up the borders and let another 5 or 10 million in…see where we are with another 10 years of this problem…Have a nice day!

MOVING TO MEXICO

May 13th, 2010
9:52 am

Dear President Obama:

I’m planning to move my family and extended family into Mexico, and I would like to ask you to assist me.

We’re planning to simply walk across the border from the U.S. into Mexico, and we’ll need your help to make a few arrangements.

We plan to skip all the legal stuff like visas, passports, immigration quotas, and laws.

I’m sure they handle those things the same way you do here. So, would you mind telling your buddy, President Calderon, that I’m on my way over?

Please let him know that I will be expecting the following:

1. Free medical care for my entire family.

2. English-speaking government bureaucrats for all services I might need, whether I use them or not.

3. Please print all Mexican government forms in English.

4. I want my grandkids to be taught Spanish by English-speaking (bi-lingual) teachers.

5. Tell their schools they need to include classes on American culture and history.

6. I want my grandkids to see the American flag on one of the flag poles at their school.

7. Please plan to feed my grandkids at school for both breakfast and lunch.

8. I will need a local Mexican driver’s license so I can get easy access to government services.

9. I do plan to get a car and drive in Mexico, but I don’t plan to purchase car insurance, and I probably won’t make any special effort to learn local traffic laws.

10. In case one of the Mexican police officers does not get the memo from their president to leave me alone, please be sure that every patrol car has at least one English-speaking officer.

11. I plan to fly the U.S. flag from my house top, put U.S. flag decals on my car, and have a gigantic celebration on July 4th. I do not want any complaints or negative comments from the locals.

12. I would also like to have a nice job without paying any taxes, or have any labor or tax laws enforced on any business I may start.

13. Please have the president tell all the Mexican people to be extremely nice and never say critical things about me or my family, or about the strain we might place on their economy.

14. I want to receive free food stamps.

15. Naturally, I’ll expect free rent subsidies.

16. I’ll need Income tax credits; so although I don’t pay Mexican Taxes, I’ll receive money from the government.

17. Please arrange it so that the Mexican Gov’t. pays $4,500 to help me buy a new car.

18. Oh yes, I almost forgot: please enroll me free into the Mexican Social Security program so that I’ll get a monthly income in retirement.

I know this is an easy request because you already do all these things for all his people who walk over to the U.S. from Mexico.
I am sure that President Calderon won’t mind returning the favor if you ask him nicely.

Thank you so much for your kind help. You’re the man!!!

We should support vigorous enforcement of immigration laws. Latinos want African-Americans to support their agenda, but the record shows little reciprocity. Mexican-Americans refused to stand with African-American civil rights groups during the sixties. In those days, Mexican-Americans protested their own segregation because they wanted to be regarded as white. In other words, Mexican-Americans didn’t fight to abolish white privilege; they wanted to get the same white privilege! When the civil rights era ended and affirmative action opened some doors, all of a sudden Mexican-Americans weren’t white anymore. Blacks should be careful who stands to gain in this immigration problem.

AJames- some of this is about racism. And its obvious from some of the posters here.

However, even as a pasty white guy who’s ancestors came over on the Mayflower… I still find the racist attitides disguisting. I would celebrate any one of my kids marrying into a hispanic family – by and large the hispanic and Latino cultures are family friendly and faithful.

My objections to allowing the status quo with illegal immigration have a lot more to do with the cost to the immigrants, the load on our social services (if given work visas, legitimate jobs and health insurance our emergency rooms would be better off and so would the immigrants) and the crime lords that are enabled by ILLIGAL immigration.

Arizona, Texas, New Mexico and even Georgia have a wonderful dynamic Hispanic culture- I’m all for that and I appreciate having a very diverse community.

Cynthia, why does it surprise you that most people favor the new law? I think most polls show the numbers are more like 70/30. Profiling is not illegal; every other country does it.

This is a classic case of the liberal media throwing a fit and trying to create controversy, when the real controversy is why we let all these people in the country in the first place. It is only controversial if we DON’T try to throw them out, or make them become citizens the right way.

I think the biggest problem is that the liberals still don’t get that the word “illegal” actually means “against the law”. Arizona is taking action to fix their problem, when the federal government would not.

Secondly, did you know that Mexico already has this same law in effect? Is Mexico racist as well? Should we all boycott Mexico?

If people want to move to the United States, let them do it through the channels that have already been established. There’s a process already in place to handle these requests. Are you really okay with setting the precedent that if you don’t like the law you don’t have to follow it?

Building a fence will help but many illegals come on visas and just don’t leave. We are also putting to many foreign students in our best schools. If you’re an American trying to get into UCLA forget it. At least 40% are foreign students, mostly from mainland China. Our own students struggle to compete because they are not given a decent education in K-12 because the teachers are spending to much time with those illegals and anchor babies that don’t speak English. It is a real problem. We are literally giving the country away while our politicians try to turn the USA into the United Nations as we become one big world of people.

Arizona is at least taking this crap on and hopefully more states will follow. But one of the best things that Arizona did was outlaw MEChA in their schools. That is the most hateful organizations I have ever come across in my life. Our taxes are paying for classes that teach student how to hate this country and be anarchists. People have to show their Driver’s License or picture ID at bars, road blocks, during traffic stops, etc. Why is this any different? And by the way, the intent of this law is to get the Mexican drug cartels out of our country and make things safer for the US border.

Maybe if the federal government would do something about the border violence, Arizona wouldn’t have had to pass this law.

I know there may be some targeting involved in this, but last time I checked there weren’t any French or Canadian drug cartels killing innocent people in the US…
