The SCLC’s slow suicide

The FBI is investigating the Rev. Raleigh Trammell, chairman of the SCLC board, and a few members say they have evidence that he put more than half a million of the organization’s funds in his personal checking accounts. If he cared about the organization, he would step down. Instead, he’s being propped up by board members whose reflexive action is to defend any black person in trouble. It doesn’t matter it they end up killing the SCLC.

From Ohio TV station WHIO:

Members of the the National Board of Directors for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference came to Dayton Thursday from all over the country to throw their support behind Rev. Raleigh Trammell.
Trammell, chairman of the national board and president of the SCLC’s local chapter, is under investigation for allegedly embezzling nearly $570,000 from the national organization’s funds. The national treasurer is also facing the same allegations.

During a news conference Thursday afternoon, SCLC national board members said they are standing behind Trammell and stressed that Trammell has not been charged with any crime.

“We have the right to have our day, to have our story told,” said national board member Rev. Makel Hutchins. “We must not pre-convict people or try them in the court of public opinion before they have had an opportunity to see a court of law.”

The FBI raided Trammell’s Dayton office earlier this month, removing several computers and other files. In reaction to the allegations, the SCLC also began an internal financial investigation.

“We have thus far seen no evidence of any misuse or unauthorized use of SCLC funds,” said Randy Johnson, of the SCLC internal investigation
will be released in April.

“There is a storm that has met us and we’re meeting it head on,” said Hutchins. “When all this is over the SCLC will emerge stronger, wiser and better.”

Trammell did not make any statements and the national board did not address any alleged misspending at the local level.

Cynthia,

Nice going, CT. Do you also think that the SCLC has served it’s better days and should go the way of Black History Month?

As long as we are focusing on obselete political organizations, perhaps we should take a long look at the Congressional Black Caucus. J.C. Watts was the only Republican invited to join in recent history and he declined, stating that the organization represented nothing more than a bunch of “race-hustling poverty pimps”. They have repeatedly denied membership to white applicants, stating that the Congress has been a “white Congressional Caucus” for 200 years and the CBC is a black only organization. They continually back and support their own, despite glaring evidence of wrong doing, ie Cold Cash Jefferson, who never got a rebuke from the CBC during the whole time he was being investigted. And the latest member of that auguste group facing possible rebukes for tax evasion and taking unauthorized junkets paid for by corporate donations is none other than the esteemed Congessman from NY, Charles Rangel, chair of none other than the Ways and Means Committee. Don’t hold your breath waiting for a rebuke from the CBC regarding Charlie’s behavior. After all, he is black.

You cant write, “This piece stinks” unless you explain why it stinks.

You can’t praise a piece either, without giving specific examples of why it succeeds.

I think the piece stinks because Cynthia didn’t ask me to the Sadie Hawkins Day dance coming up at the end of February, the 29th I believe.

Some of you folks will praise CT when she writes a piece like this, as it is in alignment with all of your views on race; but you’ll be the first to raise he– if she (or anyone else for that matter) wrote a piece questioning the ‘racial motivations’ of many of those affiliated with the ‘tea party’ movement. Some of ya’ll love Bill Cosby when he challenges some black folk to be more self reliant, but you don’t want to hear it when a commentator might point to the negative racial motivations of those in the ‘birther’ movement. The truth is that all of those positions are reasonable. We’d be a lot better off if more people saw that!

Granny,
I thought you left. You haven’t responded to the statements I made in the last blog entry. Why? I thought for sure that somebody who does their research BEFORE they state things would be able to provide me with more info about the Coburn amendment that would require Congress to enter into the healthcare plan. Surely they would, especially after they cite something while potentially adding on an extra sentence to skew it dramatically.
I also thought for sure that somebody who does that same amount of research would be able to refute their incorrect thoughts regarding the union exemption to the tax on cadillac plans. Please explain how union agreements include taxes. Maybe you could even cite an example of where a union has an agreement regarding additional taxes being levied on its employees. Maybe there is something out there that some company was actually willing to pay their union employees more if their taxes are increased.

Read “The Day America Told The Truth”. It appears that truth and integrity is reserved for just a few among us these days. Our culture is in trouble when we draw the line between race, political affiliation and popular opinion vs. truth, integrity and just plain ol’ common sense. Say what you will about C.T. but I believe she says what she believes to be the truth and then stands behind her communications. Again, GOOD WORK C.T..

The SCLC obviously does not have appropriate Financial Controls or maybe NO Financial Controls for one individual to distribute funds without some form of basic oversight and/or checks and balances. Sounds like the Inmates are Running the Asylum. Let the organization disband after the way Joe Lowery was mistreated by this new breed of Hustlers.

No…You found that article and added on a final sentence to it. I checked the Congressional record and the library of congress and it says that it is still active.

I did NOT morph the tax discussion into anything. I asked how it was fair for the unions to get an exemption from the cadillac TAX and you said it was because of the labor agreement. That is when I asked when taxes started being included in labor agreements. Just admit it….you have no answer for this. You made up or regurgitated a lie about the cadillas TAX. I emphasize TAX because that was the whole reason the discussion arose. it was an exemption to a TAX!!!!!

Way back when blacks began asserting themselves in the quest for social justice black ministers were called on to lead because they were the only ones that were trusted with the authority to lead because the black church was thought to be the only place where blacks could assemble and strategize safely, but Birmingham erased that belief. What???, that’s what all the Rev stuff means. Enlightening yourself to the legacy of a people who make up roughly 13% of the population- a people who Jim Crow terrorized until the Civil Rights Act of 1964 drove a stake through his heart- will not make you an “N” lover.

Bullsheet. The reason that there are so many blacks and latinos incarcerated is due to the inequality of the justice system. When you have predominantly white judges, they are know to be more lenient on white defendants versus those of color. Need evidenece? Why are there two different types of sentencing for cocaine and crack? Who are the major majority of the cocaine users and the majority of the crack users?

CT, what’s going on at SCLS is worse than suicide. It’s more like creeping senility coupled with the slow collapse of major organ systems … the patient is increasingly losing focus and acuity (look it up, Russ555) and unable to function.

You are an idiot.

CT just published a post about actions in the SCLC. The actions are stealing money from the very people who are supposed to be serving. It’s not a black white thing. You on the other hand are speculating about motives…speculation about which you have no facts. When CT speculates about such matters she is gets an earful because she is pulling those ideas out of her anal orifice.
You do too.

I beg to differ. If the stats were to be pulled on sentences versus those who are given probation, dismissed cases, etc. you will see the great disparity and that will provide an explanation as to why there are more people of color in prison.

Tommy,

You are a genius!

At least you and your mama think so. One question: Are you denying that negative racial motivations may inspire some in the ‘birther’ and ‘tea party’ movements? If so, would that not involve speculation on your part? I’m sorry, you probably know all of them personally and can attest to their fine character and the fact that they desire to live in a ‘post racial’ society with enlightened opinions that are based solely on the obsevations of a reasonable person.

Then again, maybe you’ll choose to grow up and join us in the real world….or maybe not.

Non-Prophet Organization

February 26th, 2010
5:48 pm

I think that the comments about the SCLC being singled out may be on target. In my dealings with non-profits, they tend to fall into two categories — those that clearly serve a mission, and those whose real purpose is to serve the leaders.

In the first category, I would put the soup kitchens, homeless shelters, Boys and Girls Clubs, Boy Scouts and the like. Money is collected personally and spent frugally.

The second category exists promote the leaders emotionally, socially or politically. One needs only to attend some of the fundraisers of these organizations to see that they are primarily networking events that pander to the participants need to strike empathetic poses. I would point to the United Way and the Sierra Club as the most egregious examples. I have several old friends who have their own “foundations.” It’s absolutely appalling how they spend the money — little more than a slush fund to buy access, visibility and self-aggrandizement.

If the SCLC minister in Ohio stole the money, fry him. But it also makes sense to look more closely at how other non-profits use their funds. He may have diverted funds into his checking account, but others are equally guilty of abusing trust by diverting funds to serve their own egos.
