Jenny:Don’t bother falling back in love with me
Well, here’s a real non-surprise: Jenny Sanford, the put-upon wife of S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford, is filing for divorce. You could see that one coming from the moment her love-struck husband stood up in public and called his mistress his “soulmate” while vowing that, nevertheless, he would labor diligently to try to fall back in love with his wife.
For professional women of my generation, Jenny Sanford is intriguing, but she shouldn’t be. She surprises, but she shouldn’t. Her actions are perfectly rational for a well-educated and independent woman who had a successful career before she married.
But she’s a rarity. Most political wives, literally, stand by their foolish philandering husbands, managing a moonstruck gaze even as the errant husband stands before microphones publically confessing his sins. From Silda Wall, the attorney wife of disgraced former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer, to Wendy Vitter, the attorney wife of prostitute-patronizing Sen. David Vitter, wives of politicians not only remain married (which may be a rational decision), they publicly lend support to their philandering husbands (which is not).
And, yes, I’m including the most complex political wife of all, attorney and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, on the list of political wives who put up with all sorts of foolishness. After appearing on TV during her husband’s first presidential campaign to declare that she wasn’t some little cookie-making Tammy Wynette, what did she do? Why, she stood by her man.
The stereotype is so embedded in popular culture that it launched a new drama this season on CBS. On “The Good Wife,” Julianna Margulies plays, yes, an attorney whose politician-husband lands in jail from a sex and corruption scandal.
Just in the nick of time, along comes Jenny Sanford, behaving much more like the normal women that I know. She didn’t immediately throw the governor overboard after she learned of the affair. She warned him to stay away from the other woman. She tried to salvage her marriage for the sake of her four boys. But the idiot . . .well, you know the rest of the story.
Thank you, Jenny Sanford, for refusing to be a Stepford Wife.

I’m confused. Just the other day you were blathering about how divorce should be banned and now you’re sitting here blathering about how strong and brave this woman is for divorcing her cheating husband. Most of the women who “stand by their man” are standing by their income and prestige. A lot of women can be bought by these, example, Hillary Clinton. Sometimes a guaranteed income for getting to stay home and spend money is what women settle for.

1. Spitzer’s spouse is in a different position than Jennifer Sanford. In Silda Wall’s case, he has the money, not her.
2. Also, the Spitzer matter was about sex, not about an obsession with finding a ’soul mate’. This latter point must stick in Jennifer Sanford’s craw.

Many men are so gullible. Any woman capable of selling laxatives and toilet paper can sell a man on having a “soul mate”. The tired, worn phrase, “Where have you been all my life” is a direct response to superior selling skills. What Sanford may soon find out is that his little Argentinian honey is more into living in America than she is into him.

I find it amusing that liberals seem to think that it is far more hypocritical of Republicans to cheat on their wives than it is for Democrats to do so. Are these folks saying that it is OK for Democrats to cheat on their wives because we expect them to? What a joke.
Here is a clue: anyone who cheats on their spouse is a hypocrite and only a mindless partisan would actually think that party affiliation has anything to do with it.
