Barr: Stop “scaremongering” over detainees

Finally, a small group of conservatives — including Georgia’s own Bob Barr — is behaving in a level-headed and rational way toward accused terrorists. Barr, who was the Libertarian candidate for president in 2008, is joining David Keene, chairman of the American Conservative Union, and Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform, to urge prominent public officials to stop whining and fretting over the notion that Guantanamo detainees could end up on American soil.

“The scaremongering about these issues should stop,” Barr, Keene and Norquist wrote.

“Civilian federal courts are the proper forum for terrorism cases,” they wrote. “Civilian prisons are the safe, cost effective and appropriate venue to hold persons in federal courts.”

Thank heaven for that. Repubicans and many Democrats have been going nuts, behaving as though federal prisons could not possibly hold these guys. Of course, they can. Many convicted terrorists are already behind bars on U.S. soil, and not one has ever escaped.

The latest proposal for housing them is to to use the prison at Thomson, Illinois, a plan which has received the support of several Illinois officials. Let’s get going and close the facility at Guantanamo Bay.

I say ………. after they were fully interrogated for any intelligence information, they should have been transported to Afghanistan and placed 100 yards in front of a Marine postion – armed and ready to fight. They want to fight don’t they?

I agree to the use of thew max security fed pens to keep these guys in until we eliminate them. I am completely in favor of using the Southern District of NY federal prosecutors to try any & all. I do not want to give terrorist tied to no particular nation the status of prisoner of war, and this is what a military trial will do. Treat them the same way we treated McVeigh, as the piece of scum they are.

Having said that, the solution of Common Sense at 3:45PM has a lot of merit.

Barr’s the one who’s been scaremongering about Big Brother and the novel 1984. So he has no credibility about any scaremongering others may indulge. The dude is a one-note Pete. Sure wish he’d peter-out.

BTW, did he use any phrase in the piece about Gitmo escapees on US soil like this, “The only good thing about big government is that they’d capture any Gitmo escapees in, like, two seconds.” ???

What difference does it make? A prison’s a prison. Oh, I remember, Gitmo is Dick Cheney’s baby and we simply despise Dick Cheney because we’re liberal and Cheney ran something called Haliburton and that is a bad thing because the New York Times said so.

It makes me sad that there is racism among blacks in this country. Meaning that the black folks with light skin discriminate against black folks with darker skin. Check the advertisements on TV. Perhaps this is why it is easy for Ms. Tucker to talk down to the Chinese about their racism.

the concern is not the prison or prisoners, it is the 200 visitors that each one of the terrorists get to have every year. they will be using the trains, boats, and planes to get to see their buddies. perfect excuse for more visas and passports for potential terror events on out soil. people need to think beyond the obvious, even dear cindy.

Why start with “finally a small group of conservatives” and then go on to say in next para after quote that “Republicans and many Democrats have been going nuts”…has there finally been a small group of liberals” that have said it is OK to bring Guantanomo detainees to the continental US (vs. a US military base)? Have Senators Feinstein and Boxer opened the gates of the Golden State to the detainees? (Cali did let 40k criminals out early to ease prison overcrowding, right)?

El Jefe, you are wrong, individuals flying planes into buildings is a crime, it is not an act of war because it was not done by a nation but by criminals. Most of the terrorist attempts since 9/11 have been thwarted by law enforcement from various countries–not the military. If Bush had worked with the international law enforcement communities, we would have caught Osama Bin Laden. Instead, he had to swagger off to war which has not done a thing except result in over 5000 deaths of our countries best and bravest people. The only other result has been billions of our tax dollars funneled to corporations like Halliburton, that really, really needed the boost in their revenues. It is interesting also to listen to Giuliani and Karl Rove bloviate on Fox News about how horrible it is that they are bringing these people to NY to be tried, when, only three years ago (on film-so he can’t deny it!), when other terrorists were brought to trial on American soil, Rudy Giuliani was saying what a great example of the strength of the American system of justice system it was. You’ve got to love the alternate universe of the Republicans!

If I were one of the terrorist coming to American soil, I would defend myself. Yes, for Allah and the jihad, I would defend myself so I can have total access to CIA, FBI, and military intelligence gathering files. I would put America on trial before the world. The liberals have already stated we are a torturing nation.

Of course I would need some legal assistance but when I am finished all soldiers and U.S. agents would be upcoming targets if not already eliminated. I would do all this with the gratitude of Eric Holder, OBama, liberal attack media, and the liberal ideologists who want a socialist government.

Naturally the prisons would confine the terrorist but as a defendant against the US I would call for a jihad against all the local cities. This would unite all the hidden cells in the US. I could see mass hysteria. Cynthia could you move to Chicago?

They should be tried in civil crimal court. If we the great old US of A can’t try people from out countries the correct way what makes you think when they get a US citizen not a solider just a citizen for doing something stupid they wont just kill them with no trial.

Scaremongering over the detainees is script written by the liberal media! That is a fact! The only ones fearing anything are the liberals. If something happens, then the appointed ONE will be blamed. Oh that is right the appointed one did not make that decision is was Eric Holder who made that decision. Obama is cleared.

However, the remaining citizens of this country have the right to their opinion and the right to know what New Yorkers are doing that could affect the rest of the country.

Do you remember Timmothy McVeigh?
The FBI did some really bad things and Timmothy took it out on federal employees and buildings.(Eric Holder is a federal employee.) It was awful what he did! Timmothy paid for it with his life.

Of course the jihadists could not be as terrible, coniving, and vengeful as Timmothy in liberal eyes. After all, we torture!
